Red Raiders topple Colonials in boys soccer, 6-1 Uniontown built a 2-0 first half lead and the Red Raiders made the lead stand for a 6-1 Section 4-AAA victory in the boys soccer season finale on the road at Albert Gallatin.
Ryan Robowski scored first for Uniontown (4-11) off a Garret Graham assist. Kyle Markwardt doubled the advantage later in the first half from a T.C. Myers pass.
Myers opened the scoring in the second half with an unassisted goal, and Graham made it 4-0.
Albert Gallatin’s Logan Galand helped the Colonials avoid a shutout, but Robowski added his second goal soon after off a Markwardt pass. Paul Davis’ unassisted goal capped the scoring.
Uniontown had 25 shots on Albert Gallatin’s Steven Stahl while Albert Gallatin mustered only five on Darren Webster.
Laurel Highlands 4, Yough 2 – The Mustangs rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the first half with Brett Workman tying the game and Matt Turko scoring the go-ahead goal at 3:11 to give Laurel Highlands a season-ending Section 1-AA home victory.
Brian Lilley scored an insurance goal at 27:35 of the second half from an Alex Russell assist. Russell scored the first Mustang goal.
“We were riddled with injuries. It took key players out in key matches,” said Laurel Highlands head coach Brad Takach.
“It was a very tight section. You give up a game here or there, it effects your playoff chances.”
Laurel Highlands finished fourth in the section with a 7-6-1 record with an overall record of 11-7-1.
The Mustangs’ six losses came to the three playoff teams, Belle Vernon, Southmoreland and Indiana.
Waynesburg Central 4, Brownsville 2 – The Falcons tied the final Section 5-AA match of the year twice, but the Raiders offense rose to the challenge for the victory.
Waynesburg’s Matt Headlee scored the lone goal of the first half. John Marcolini tied the game for the Falcons from a Marc Mammarella assist.
Todd Barchiesi gave Waynesburg the lead again in the 23rd minute, but Mammarella’s 21st goal of the season off a penalty kick a minute later tied the game.
The game continued to be a tight defensive battle, but the Falcons were whistled for a penalty and Jake Yates made the most of the opportunity with a goal off a penalty kick in the 12th minute.
Sean Fancher added an insurance goal late in the half.
“It was really close, then they got a penalty kick, too,” said Brownsville head coach Mark Mammarella. “We had five really good chances in the first half. We just couldn’t put them in.
“It was a little more defensive in the second half.”
The Falcons finished 3-9 in the section and 5-13-1 overall. The Raiders close the section at 5-7.
“We were struggling for a chance to get a little respect, to make a name for themselves. We just couldn’t catch a break,” said the elder Mammarella.
Girls volleyball
Brownsville 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Falcons stepped outside of section play for a night, and the effort was worth the trip with a non-section victory over the Lady Maples. Brownsville won by the scores 25-17, 25-13 and 25-21.
Emily Lucosh had six kills and three service points for Brownsville (3-14, 0-10) while Tiera Ramsey had eight kills and two service points.
Uniontown 3, Albert Gallatin 0 – The Lady Raiders won the non-section home match in three games, securing a victory over the Lady Colonials, 25-14, 25-11 and 25-14.
Andi Giachetti led the offense for Uniontown (2-8, 6-9) with 10 assists. Jen Tandarich had eight kills and five digs while Marissa Voytek added 12 aces.
Uniontown returns to Section 5-AA action tonight on the road at Southmoreland.
Women’s tennis
Waynesburg 8, Washington & Jefferson 1 – The visitors won only one singles match as the Yellow Jackets didn’t drop a set otherwise for a convincing Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory.
Mount Pleasant graduate Mindy Hall needed a second set tiebreaker, but won in straight sets at No. 1 singles. Connellsville’s Beth Conlon dropped only three games at No. 2 singles with Jennifer Knight doing her one better at No. 3 with two games lost.
Laura Garcia didn’t drop a game at No. 4 singles with Kate Huffman winning an 8-0 Pro Set match at No. 6 singles.
Hall and Garcia won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, Conlon and Knight carried No. 2 doubles, 8-1.
