Mogilny scores game-winning goal in Devils’ 4-3 victory

4 min read

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – Alexander Mogilny had the game-winning goal and two assists to make up for a defensive lapse earlier in the game and the New Jersey Devils beat the Florida Panthers 4-3 on Tuesday night. Martin Brodeur stopped 21 shots for the Devils, who snapped a two-game losing streak in which they were outscored 10-2.

The Panthers dropped their second straight game.

Three of New Jersey’s four goals came on the power play. The Devils had scored five power-play goals in 31 chances over their first five games.

Mogilny broke a 3-3 tie at 13:54 of the third period when he stuffed a pass from Jamie Langenbrunner past Roberto Luongo. He assisted on a goal by Zach Parise earlier in the period, and on a goal by Viktor Kozlov in the second period. Parise’s goal at 4:03 tied the score after Juraj Kolnik had given Florida a 3-2 lead at 3:20.

Mogilny’s goal made up for a miscue in the Devils’ zone that led to the Panthers’ first goal in the opening period. He failed to clear the puck and Nathan Horton of the Panthers took it right off his stick and wristed a shot past Brodeur from between the circles.

Just over a minute later, Sergei Brylin tied it when he knocked in a rebound.

New Jersey took a 2-1 lead at 13:38 of the second on a one-timer by Kozlov on a pass from Mogilny.

Less than three minutes later, a lapse by Brodeur allowed the Panthers to tie it. Florida’s Serge Payer took a pass from Joel Kwiatkowski and appeared headed behind the net to Brodeur’s left. Instead, he flicked a wrist shot from the side that somehow squeezed through the gap between Brodeur’s leg pad and the near post.

Canadiens 4, Bruins 3

MONTREAL – Alexander Perezhogin scored midway through the third period to cap the Montreal Canadiens’ second rally for a victory over the Boston Bruins.

Mike Ribeiro scored his second goal of the season 2:02 into the third to tie it at 3 and Perezhogin gave Montreal its only lead of the game at 9:12 with the Canadiens’ third power-play goal.

Jose Theodore of Montreal made 20 saves, including holding off Boston on a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:13 shortly after Perezhogin’s goal.

Montreal, 4-0 on the road this season, won for the first time in three home games.

The Bruins, who have their only home game – 2-1 to the Canadiens to open the season on Oct. 5, ended a six-game road trip at 3-3.

Boston built a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by P.J. Axelsson and Brian Leetch, the latter on a power play 8:20 in.

Michael Ryder and Saku Koivu scored in the second period to draw Montreal even before Nick Boynton scored the Bruins’ second power-play goal, his first of the season, at 15:43.

Boston center Dave Scatchard, called for hooking in the first period and penalized for diving when Ryder scored 5:17 into the second, was sent off for hooking 47 seconds into the third.

The Canadiens drew even at 3 when Ribeiro batted a deflection into the net after goalie Andrew Raycroft stopped defenseman Francis Bouillon’s shot from the point.

Theodore came up with a big pad save on Glenn Murray moments later to keep it tied.

It was Boston that grabbed the early two-goal lead to quiet a sellout Bell Centre crowd. Axelsson opened the scoring with his third of the season 5:38 in. Leetch got his second of the season on a power play at 8:20.

NOTES: Andre Dawson and Gary Carter were on hand as the Canadiens introduced Youppi!, the furry orange creature, as their mascot prior to the game. The former Montreal Expos greats were invited as guests of the Canadiens to unfurl a banner commemorating the defunct National League team and its retired numbers, including Dawson and Rusty Staub’s No. 10, Carter’s No. 8, and current Chicago White Sox coach Tim Raines’ No. 30. … The crowd chanted “Raycroft! Raycroft!” throughout the game. It was last heard in the Canadiens’ playoff win over the Bruins and their then-rookie goaltender in 2004.
