Geibel Catholic fires 178 in golf victory over J-M
Geibel Catholic put together it’s lowest round under three-year coach Joel Hood Thursday with a 178-218 victory over Jefferson-Morgan at Pleasant Valley C.C. in Division II, Section 8 action. “The goal for our kids this year was to shoot under 180,” said Hood. “We feel this is one of the hardest courses in the section and I’ve pleased that our kids shot under 180.”
Five of the six Gator golfers fired rounds under 40 highlighted by James McGrath’s 2-under-par round of 32 on the par-34 front nine.
Teammates Philip Lucostic (35), Zack Bell (36), Brandon Noonan (36) and Edward Spotts (39) each posted sub-40 rounds. Erio Vignali shot a 43.
“We practiced very hard this last week and a half after the Charleroi match,” Hood said. “They were not happy with themselves. We were really ready to play today.”
Chad Kokoska carded the low round for J-M with a 38.
Other Rocket scores were Zack Basinger (36), Dylan Blosser (43), Justin Hughes (46), Matt Kokoska (49) and Robbie DeHaas (52).
Geibel (2-0, 2-0) travels to Carmichaels Sept. 6 at 3:30 p.m.
Laurel Highlands 199, Albert Gallatin 202 – Albert Gallatin held a five stroke lead going into the par-3 seventh hole. That proved to be the turning point as Colonial golfers shot +11 compared the Laurel Highlands’ even par.
Going into the eighth hole, the Mustangs were up by three strokes and held on for the Division I, Section 2 victory.
Santino Martichello fired a two-under par 33 on the front nine at Duck Hollow G.C. for medallist honors.
Albert Gallatin’s Kevin Uglik finished one stroke off the pace and teammate Cory Moore rounded out the top three with a 39.
Other Mustang finishers included Fred Davis (43), Matt Hoover (41), Maria Battaglia (43), Bruck Burish (39) and Matt McCabe (43).
Brett DiDominic (45), Matt Shay (41), Tom Corazzi (43) and Jake Magerko (45) were the other AG finishing rounds.
Laurel Highlands (3-0, 6-0) hosts Waynesburg Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and Uniontown (2-2, 2-2) hosts Belle Vernon also on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Uniontown 196, Belle Vernon 222 – The Uniontown boys golf team shot it’s best round in two years as they made quick work of Belle Vernon in Division I, Section 2 action at Duck Hollow G.C.
David Bobish took home medallist honors with a 2-over-par 37 on the front nine.
Teammate Nick Meucci posted his best round in three years with a 38.
“I’m very happy,” said Uniontown coach Aaron Scott. “The kids played extremely well today.”
Other Red Raider scores were Seth Rockwell (39), Josh Miller (39), Alan Zieglar (43) and Tyler Lear (44).
Brian Luzanski had the low round for Belle Vernon with a 40.
Jeremy Westlager (41), Nick Plavchak (46), Nolan Russell (47), Ryan Andrews (50) and Robbie Lazzari (48) were the other Belle Vernon finishers.
Uniontown (2-2, 2-2) travels to Pleasant Valley to take on Connellsville Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Mount Pleasant 181, Waynesburg Central 217 – Anthony Prailey’s and Scott Bando’s 1-over-par rounds of 34 fueled Mount Pleasant’s easy Division I, Section 2 victory over Waynesburg Central at Rohanna’s G.C.
They had help from teammates Jonathan Hostoffer (35) and Josh Coccagna (38) who fired sub-40 rounds.
Zach Schloemer carded the low round for the Raiders with a 35 and Rachel Rohanna added a 37.
Waynesburg (0-4, 0-4) hope to get back on the winning track as they travel to Duck Hollow Tuesday to take on Laurel Highlands at 3 p.m.
Connellsville 203, Brownsville 232 – Jonathan Luctcka shot a 1-under-par 36 as Connellsville rolled to an easy Division I, Section 2 win over Brownsville at Carmichaels G.C.
Ron Jones and Chuck DeCarlo carded low rounds of 40 for Brownsville.
Other Connellsville scores were Craig White (42), Cody Boors (39), Devon Keno (42), Shane Cali (44) and Josh Brooks (47).
Brownsville’s Bob Anderson (51), Mike Peton (48), Mike Rhodes (53) and Paul Tate (62) turned in rounds on the front nine, par 37.
“We just got to be straight down the road with our scores,” said Brownsville coach Chris McManus. “We’re getting a lot of our young guys experience.”
Brownsville (0-4, 0-4) play Mount Pleasant at Norvelt G.C. Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Beth-Center 215, Southmoreland 238 – Roger Myers shot an even par 38 as Beth-Center rolled to an easy Division II, Section 2 win over Southmoreland at Nemacolin C.C.
Teammate Matt Rohrer and Southmoreland’s Jeff Crane tied for second place with 44s and B-C’s Zac Cattalina rounded out the top three with a 45.
“We played fairly consistent,” said Beth-Center coach Rich Gasher. “It was pretty steady all the way around.”
The Bulldogs (4-1, 3-0) play Carmichaels Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Bentworth 215, Frazier 220 – Derek Jansante shot a medal round 40 en route to a five-stroke victory over Frazier in Division II, Section 2 action at Foxwood Acres G.C.
Second place went to Frazier’s Brian Null who was just one stroke off the pace and there was a three-way tie for third place as Bentworth’s Ryan Anderson, Mark Damich and Commodores’ Marcus Wingrove each shot rounds of 42.
Frazier (0-2, 1-4) hosts Monessen Tuesday with a 3:30 start and Bentworth (2-1, 3-1) travels to Southmoreland also on Tuesday.
Girls’ tennis
Brownsville 3, Mount Pleasant 2 – It came down to the wire in the second doubles match as the team of Samantha Bochna and Amanda Johnson defeated Trisha Secanic and Tara Kraisinger by the scores of 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 and 7-1 in the tiebreaker as Brownsville edged past Mount Pleasant in Section I, Division 2 play.
In the first singles match, Brownsville’s Bethany Seelye downed Samantha Kuhn 6-2, 6-2, but Mount Pleasant’s Leisha Durstine defeated Kelly Davison (7-5, 6-3).
The Lady Scotties claimed the third singles match as Melissa Grinole made quick work of Beck Barnhart 6-3, 6-1.
It took the team of Nicole Kerestine and Sarah Mathianas three sets to win over Rebecca Senkner and Tara Kraisinger (6-3, 1-6, 6-4).
Brownsville (1-0) hosts Jeannette Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Thomas Jefferson 4, Connellsville 1 – Lauren Hartz picked up the only Connellsville victory in the second doubles match as the defeated Danielle Pack in three sets by the scores of 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
After that, it was all Thomas Jefferson as they downed the Lady Falcons in Section 5-AAA action Thursday.
In the first singles match, TJ’s Julie Pigozzi made quick work of Megan Parsons by the scores of 6-1, 6-1.
Amy Lucas fell to Amanda Nikolich in the third singles match (6-3, 6-2).
Thomas Jefferson swept both doubles matches as the team of Justine Bailey and Alexa Coughenour edged past Laura Husband and Kayla Naugle (6-4, 4-6, 6-4).
In the final match of the day, Katie Swartele and Sowyna Ni won a cliffhanger over Miranda Hughes and Emily Stout by the scores of 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 and 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
Connellsville hopes to put on in the win column Tuesday at home against Penn Trafford.
Women’s soccer
Waynesburg 2, Lake Erie 2 – Brittiny Bennett and Ashley Johnson scored goals for Waynesburg College as they tied Lake Erie in women’s soccer action.
The Yellow Jackets (0-0-1) host Muskingham Saturday at noon.
