Brownsville off to 2-0 start with victory over Deer Lakes

By The 2 min read

The Brownsville football team is off to its best start in four years (2-0) as they downed host Deer Lakes a 23-17 loss in non-conference play. Junior returning letterwinner Demetrios Williams led the way with three scores on runs, highlighted by a 76-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Williams also scored on runs of 53 yards in the first quarter and seven yards in the second. He led all rushers with 22 carries for 199 yards.

“Williams really ran the ball well tonight,” said Assad.

Place kicker Mark Mammarella drilled a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter for Brownsville’s other score and also found the uprights on two extra points.

“We played pretty hard tonight,” said Brownsville coach Andy Assad. “We made some mistakes and the defense played really well.”

Deer Lakes put together scores in the second and third quarter as quarterback Matt Latronica scampered five yards after a fumble return followed by a Jerry Irvine kick.

Irvine found the uprights from 22-yards out in the second quarter for Deer Lakes’ second score and the defense came up big again as Scott Orris intercepted a Phil Shaw pass and ran for 51 yards and the final score.

“We’re going to try and take this momentum into McGuffey next week,” Assad added.

Brownsville opens up section play Friday on the road against the Highlanders starting at 7:30 p.m.
