Brownsville blanks AG in boys soccer, 7-0 Marc Mammarella scored a pair of goals and set up two others as Brownsville cruised to a 7-0 victory over Albert Gallatin in Belle Vernon’s boys soccer tournament on Sunday.
The Falcons (1-2) scored five goals in the first half to all but put the game away.
The sister-brother combination of Natalie and Brandon Granato accounted for Brownsville’s first two goals with assists from Mammarella and Greg Arnold, respectively.
Mammarella also assisted on the first of John Marcolini’s two goals to make it 3-0 with 17:04 left in the half.
Arnold scored unassisted to put the Falcons up 4-0 and Marcolini found the net with an assist from Jordan Wilson with just 15 seconds left in the first half for a 5-0 lead.
Mammarella took care of all the second-half scoring with a pair of unassisted goals.
Josh Roberts stopped all seven shots by Albert Gallatin (0-3), while Brownsville had 19 shots on goal.
The Falcons open Section 5-AA play on Tuesday when they host McGuffey at Redstone Field.
Men’s baseball
CMU 6, PS Fayette 2; PS Fayette 4, CMU 3 – Rick Wilson tossed a complete and Sam Petko scored the winning run on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh as Penn State Fayette, The Everly Campus, earned a split in a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Carnegie Mellon.
The Roaring Lions (3-4) held a 2-1 lead before CMU surged in front with a two-run fifth.
Penn State Fayette knotted it a 3-3 in the bottom of the inning when Bobby Fulton singled, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on Justin Revak’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Petko’s fielder’s choice.
With the score still tied, CMU’s defense unraveled in the bottom of the seventh.
Petko and Jared Early both reached on errors, putting runners at first and second with two outs.
Jamie Kowalczyk’s grounder was then thrown away by the Tartan’s shortstop, allowing Petko to cross the plate with the winning run.
Wilson allowed two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman. John Baker, who doubled in both games, had two hits for Penn State Fayette.
Dan Ruef had three hits for CMU (3-1).
The Tartans won the opener by overcoming a 2-0 deficit with a six-run sixth. Jack Bader and Matt Corbett each smacked two-run doubles in the frame.
Phil Gratchic had three hits for the Roaring Lions. Dustin Coffman had two hits, including a double, and one RBI, and Jim Prosser also had two hits.
John Pochron gave up five runs in taking the loss.
Penn State Fayette begins conference play on Thursday when it hosts Penn State Kensington.
Girls volleyball
Geibel second in tournament – Geibel Catholic placed second in the 16-team Penns Manor Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.
Geibel made it to the Gold Round after playing Myersdale, Elderton and Ferndale in pool play.
Once there, the Lady Gators got revenge on Belwood Antis, the team that defeated them in the first round of the PIAA tournament last year, with a 25-19 victory. Geibel followed that up with wins over Richland, 25-20, and Derry, 25-11.
The Lady Gators went on to knock off Myersdale in the quarterfinals, 25-21, and Northern Cambrian, 25-21 in the semifinals, before falling to Titusville in the final, 25-18. Northern Cambrian and Titusville were state runners-up last year in Class A and Class AA, respectively.
