Laurel Highlands golfers remain unbeaten with 186-233 win over Waynesburg

Santino Marchitello and Matt Hoover each carded 1-over par 36s, helping Laurel Highlands remain unbeaten with an easy 186-233 victory in Division I, Section 2 action over Waynesburg Central at Duck Hollow Golf Club Tuesday. The Mustangs’ Matt McCabe added a 37, followed by Bruce Burish (38) and Maria Battaglia (39).

“I’m very satisfied with having five scores in the 30s,” said LH coach Don Crawford. “We were expected to win because Waynesburg has a very inexperienced team. But my kids played really well.

“When you throw out a 40, you can’t be too unhappy.”

Waynesburg’s Zach Schloemer led all golfers with an even-par 35, followed by Rachel Rohanna’s 41. Matt Fox (49), Taylor Moore (53) and Joe Moore (55) rounded out the Raiders’ scoring.

Laurel Highlands moved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in section play.

“We just have to keep it up,” Crawford said. “We have to shoot in the 180s against the teams that will give us a battle for the section title.”

The Mustangs return to action today, hosting California in a non-section match at Duck Hollow at 3:30 p.m.

Albert Gallatin 205, Belle Vernon 229 – Jake Magerko, the Colonials’ No. 6 golfer, fired a low-round 2-over par 37, to lift AG past the Leopards in Division I, Section 2 action at Duck Hollow Golf Club.

Brett DiDominic – the No. 5 golfer – came in at 38, as Albert Gallatin improved to 4-1 over and 4-1 in section action. Cory Moore (40), Tom Corazzi (44) and Kevin Uglik (46) rounded out the scoring.

Brian Luzanski led Belle Vernon (3-3, 2-3) with a 43, with No. 6 golfer Rob Lazzari finishing at 45. Jeremy Westlager, Nick Plavchak and Nolan Russell each carded a 47.

Connellsville 208, Uniontown 229 – Cody Boors fired a low-round 5-over par 39, to lead the unbeaten Falcons past the Red Raiders in Division I, Section 2 action at Pleasant Valley Country Club.

Connellsville’s Jonathan Luczka followed Boors with a 41, while Shane Cali (42), Devin Keno (42) and Craig White (44) rounded out the scoring. The victory moved the Falcons to 4-0 overall and in section play.

David Bobish led the Red Raiders with a 41, followed by Josh Miller (42), Seth Rockwell (45), Nick Meucci (48) and Allen Ziegler (53). Uniontown drops to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in section play.

Monessen 244, Frazier 245 – The Greyhounds’ Scott Galilei fired the low-round with a 46 to lift Monessen to a close Division II, Section 2 win over the Commodores.

Geibel Catholic 203, Carmichaels 242 – James McGrath fired a 1-over-par 38 for medallist honors as Geibel Catholic rolled to an easy Division II, Section 8 victory over Carmichaels.

The Gators (3-0) finished one through five on the front nine at Carmichaels G.C. as teammates Philip Lucostic (40), Zack Bell (41), Brandon Noonan (41) and Edward Spots (43) all finished ahead of Carmichaels’ Dan Lasko’s 44.

Other Carmichaels (0-5) finishers included Justin Phillips (45), Tim Voithofer (50), Jeff McWilliams (51) and Pete Putila (52).

Carmichaels hopes to put one in the win column today at home against Beth-Center starting at 3 p.m. Geibel looks to remain undefeated as it hosts Washington Thursday at Pleasant Valley C.C. with a 3:30 start time.

Mapletown 214, Jefferson-Morgan 217 – Joel Kovach carded an even par round of 36 on the front nine at Greene County Country Club en route to a three-stroke victory over host Jefferson-Morgan in Division II, Section 8 action.

“In general we didn’t play as good as we’re capable of,” said J-M coach John Curtis. “Mapletown came in and played very well.”

Chad Kokoska fired the low round for the Rockets (3-2, 4-2) with a 39. Teammate Justin Hughes and Mapletown’s Zach Cumberland tied for second place with rounds of 42.

There was a three-way tie for third as J-M’s Matt Kokoska and Zack Basinger as well as Mapletown’s Cory Dillinger each shot 43s.

Other Mapletown finishers included Jesse Boord (47) and Don Hilenbrant (46) while Dylan Blosser (50) and Robbie DeHaas (50) rounded out J-M’s scorers.

Jefferson-Morgan hosts Waynesburg Central today at Greene County C.C. with a 3 p.m. starting time.

Girls volleyball

Yough 3, Uniontown 1 – The Lady Cougars won the third and fourth sets in taking the Section 5-AA win over the host Lady Raiders.

Yough won the opening set, 35-33, before Uniontown tied the match with a 25-14 win. The Lady Cougars then won the third set, 25-14, and the final set, 25-20.

For Uniontown, Marissa Voytek had 12 kills and four blocks. Lauren Wagner added 10 kills and two blocks, while Andi Giachetti chipped in 13 assists.

Uniontown faces Laurel Highlands tonight at 6 in a non-section match.

Southmoreland 3, Brownsville 0 – The Lady Scotties had an easy time with the Lady Falcons in Section 5-AA action.

Southmoreland won its opener by scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-10.

For Brownsville, Emily Lucosh had six kills and four digs, while Bethany Jurcszak had four aces, two kills and five digs.

Frazier 3, West Greene 0 – Rachel Hudik had 18 assists and 15 service points, while Sara Zebley recorded 30 service points as the Lady Commodores topped the Lady Pioneers in Section 6-A action.

Frazier’s Kate Oldham added nine kills.

The Commodores return to action Thursday, traveling to Mapletown at 6 p.m.

Geibel Catholic 3, Carmichaels 0 – Chelsey Kreinbrook had 23 service points and 17 assists to lift the Lady Gators past the Lady Mikes in Section 6-A action.

Natalie Hozak added 10 kills, with Kaylee Robinson adding five and Kate Lyn Schuessler chipping in 16 service points.

Bentworth 3, California 0 – Jenah Ezarik had 10 kills to lead the Lady Bearcats past the Lady Trojans in Section 5-A action.

Kayla Sprisik added eight aces for the winners, which won by scores of 25-10, 25-20 and 25-18.

Taylor Popelas had eight service points to lead California.

Albert Gallatin 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Colonials breezed past the Lady Maples in non-section action. Albert Gallatin won by scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-10.

Waynesburg Central 3, McGuffey 2 – The Lady Raiders won the fifth and deciding game, 15-12, in capturing a five-set Section 4-AA victory.

Waynesburg won the opening set, 25-21, then lost 25-21. The Raiders rebounded in the third set with a 25-20 win, before losing 25-23 on set No. 4.

Meredith Winters had 34 assists, Jackie Fontana added 19 digs and Marissa Spencer chipped in 11 kills.

Girls tennis

Penn-Trafford 3, Connellsville 2 – The Lady Indians took two of three singles matches en route to a Section 5-AAA victory over the host Lady Falcons.

At No. 1 singles, Natalie Tovino defeated Connellsville’s Megan Parsons, 6-2, 6-2, while at No. 2 singles, Amanda Ernzer defeated the Lady Falcons’ Lauren Hartz, 6-4, 6-2.

Connellsville’s No. 3 player, Amy Lucas, defeated Casey Hufnagle, 6-3, 6-1.

Penn-Trafford’s Beth Wiehagen and Maive Tovino defeated Laura Husband and Kayla Naugle, 6-2, 6-4, with Connellsville’s Miranda Hughes and Emily Stout teaming to defeat Allie Botti and Lindsey English, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).

The Lady Falcons fall to 0-2, while Penn-Trafford improves to 0-2.

Boys soccer

Belle Vernon 2, Laurel Highlands 1 – Belle Vernon jumped on the scoreboard early on an unassisted goal by Chris Sillence and never looked back as they handed Laurel Highlands a Section 1-AA loss at home.

Teammate Rob Miele opened the second half for the Leopards with another unassisted goal, then Jerrett Pickens put the Mustangs on the board on an assist by Jon Michniak.

Laurel Highlands goalkeeper Eric Supensky recorded 10 saves, compared to Ian Connolly’s six saves for Belle Vernon.

The Mustangs (0-1, 1-1) take on Southmoreland Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Bethel Park 7, Uniontown 0 – Kyle Young and Chris Trepaginer scored two goals each to lead the Indians past the Red Raiders in Section 4-AAA action.

McGuffey 4, Brownsville 1 – Four different players scored for the Highlanders in Section 5-AA action.

Austin Williams and Brent Vanderhoof scored in the first half, as did Brownsville’s Mark Mammarella. McGuffey’s James Gross and Nathan Dutton added second-half goals.

Brownsville’s Josh Roberts stopped 19 shots. The Falcons fall to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in section play.

Boys cross country

Connellsville 22, Hempfield 34 – The Falcons had three of the top four finishers and four of the top six in a non-section victory on the road at Hempfield.

Connellsville’s Joe Villanueva made it 2-for-2 this year, winning in a time of 19:03. The Spartans’ Caleb Betton trailed by 10 seconds, but the Falcons (2-0) followed with Brad Showman (19:28) and Arlo Helms (19:30).

Nathan Richter came in sixth in a time of 20:24 and Alan Nedley sealed the win in eighth place with a time of 20:34.

Girls cross country

Hempfield 25, Connellsville 30 – The Lady Falcons couldn’t take advantage of the 1-2 finish by Mary Beth Giles and Julie Burns, dropping a close non-section meet at Hempfield.

Giles won for the second time in as many meets, cruising past the field in 23:36. Burns trailed by 17 seconds, but it was all the Lady Spartans after that as five Hempfield girls crossed the finish line for the win.

Michelle Rugg finished eighth overall for Connellsville (1-1) in a time of 26:07, six seconds behind Brenna Hogan for crucial points. April Shultz was only a second behind Rugg while Leah Williams rounded out the top 10 in a time of 26:38.
