Mapletown’s Geisel had a career day against Chartiers-Houston The final score said “Mapletown 31, Chartiers-Houston 16,” but that could just as easily have read “Ryan Geisel 30, C-H 16.”

Geisel scored all five touchdowns, and set the scoring pace for the week as the Maples rebounded from an opening one-point loss to put their first win of the season into the book.

As a team, Mapletown ran 54 plays overland for 287 yards. Of this total, the workhorse senior back carried 36 times for 210 yards, including scoring runs of 23, 22, 7, 5, and 4 yards. The only offensive score Geisel didn’t get was the one extra-point, and Justin Yost took care of that with a fourth quarter kick.

Weekly offensive and defensive figures are compiled for teams in the Herald-Standard coverage area are compiled from games either covered by this staff or as reported by coaches or statisticians.

Closest to Geisel on offense was Brownsville running back Dimetrius Williams, who scored three times as the Falcons tripped Deer Lakes, 23-17. Williams scored on long bursts of 53 and 76 yards, as well as on a short 7-yarder.

Overall, offensively, Beth-Center got 47 in its win over Geibel Catholic, Mapletown had 31 at Chartiers-Houston, Brownsville scored 23 against Deer Lakes, Jefferson-Morgan had 22 in a loss to Burgettstown, and Carmichaels totaled 20 in beating Bentworth, the only teams surpassing 20 for the week.

Beth-Center’s 47-12 win over Geibel also gave the Bulldogs the lead on both sides of the scorebook. Offensively they have scored 67 points for an average of 33.5 per game, an edge of four over last week’s leader Mapletown (58-29.0). Then comes Waynesburg Central with 55-27.5, Connellsville 41-20.5, and Brownsville 37-18.5.

Defensively, Beth-Center sets the stinginess pace, giving up only 19 points in two games, for an average of 9.5 per game, the only defense with a sub-10 allowance. And all those 19 points have been scored in the second half, seven in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth.

Then comes Carmichaels, right on the 10 point figure, with 20 points allowed in two games, followed by Brownsville with 23-11.5, California 31-15.5, and Connellsville, 34-17.0, the Falcons just a half-point ahead of Laurel Highlands (35-17.5).

Three teams got on the board for the first time this week, although none scored a touchdown. Belle Vernon got a 30-yard field goal from Rob Miele in a 40-3 loss to Peters Twp., while Southmoreland and Laurel Highlands scored a safety each in their losses to Ringgold and Burrell, respectively.

Actually, the Ringgold and LH game looked more like they were playing baseball instead of football. RHS got a touchdown in the first period and the Mustangs their safety in the second, and that would be all the scoring in the 7-2 outcome.

Some top individual efforts for the week included:

-Long TD Scoring Run – Dimetrius Williams, Brownsville vs. Deer Lakes.

-Long Pass-Run TD – 87 yards, Clay Hurley to Terrence McCrea, Connellsville vs. Latrobe.

-Kickoff Return TD – 90 yards, Jarrod Moskola, Jefferson-Morgan vs. Burgettstown.

-TD Run With Fumble – 44 yards, Terry Guthrie, Uniontown vs. Elizabeth-Forward.

-Field Goals – 30 yards, Rob Miele, Belle Vernon vs. Peters Twp.; 25, Ryan Robowski, Uniontown vs. Elizabeth-Forward; 22, Marc Mammarella, Brownsville vs. Deer Lakes; 20, Matt Kline, Jefferson-Morgan vs. Burgettstown.
