LH edges Uniontown in boys non-league soccer game Jason Lementowski scored two goals and assisted on one as Laurel Highlands downed cross-town rival Uniontown at home 5-3 in non-section boys soccer action Wednesday.
Uniontown’s Ryan Robowski opened the scoring at the 32:15 mark.
The Mustangs answered as they peeled off two straight goals.
Lementowski picked up his first at 26:50 on an assist by Cory Borland, and Brett Workman scored his first of two goals to close the half, as Borland picked up his second assist.
“Uniontown (0-3, 0-4) dominated at the beginning of each half,” LH coach Brad Takach said. “We had to come back and pick up the pace and put our game back together.”
The Mustangs (1-2, 4-2) led 2-1 at the half.
Dave Hough extended the lead at the 36:45 on a Lementowski assist.
Uniontown’s Kyle Markwardt scored just over three minutes later on a Luke Monahan assist.
Lementowski added his second goal on the assist from Borland, and the Red Raiders countered quickly as Luke Monahan scored unassisted.
Workman scored the final goal of the game on a free kick at the 18:48 mark.
“It’s been a very long week,” said Uniontown coach Matt Girod. “Our legs were really heavy out there.”
Uniontown goalkeeper Darren Webster posted eight saves, while LH’s Jordan Merchbaker, stopped seven.
“We’re going to need to recharge our batteries a little bit going into Saturday’s game vs. McKeesport,” Girod added.” The game is at 7 .m. at home.
Boys golf
Geibel Catholic 188, California 215 – Three Geibel Catholic golfers shot even par rounds of 37 on the front nine at Carmichaels G.C. en route to an easy Division II, Section 8 win over California Wednesday.
James McGrath, Philip Lucostic and Brandon Noonan each shot even par, as did California’s Josh Saxe for a four-way tie for medallist honors.
“After the loss against Mapletown, I’m really glad they came back like that,” said Geibel coach Joel Hood.
The Gators shot a stunning 3-over par as a team, as Edward Spotts carded a 38 and Zack Bell shot 2-over-par 39.
Erio Vignali’s round of 43 was thrown out.
Other California finishers include Adam Schaum (46), Matt Porter (44), Travis VanOlst (45), Ryan Drupp (43) and Frank Turosek (56).
Geibel (5-1, 5-1) plays today at Charleroi.
Mapletown 196, Laurel Highlands 198 – Cory Dillinger fired a 1-over-par 36, as Division II, Section 8 leader Mapletown downs Division I, Section 2 leader Laurel Highlands in non-section play Wednesday at Duck Hollow G.C.
The Maples (6-0, 8-0) carry their unbeaten streak into the second half of the season after a section win over Washington Tuesday (209-230) and a victory over unbeaten Geibel earlier in the week.
“Anytime you can beat LH on their home course, it’s a big win,” said Mapletown coach Craig Hoone. “It’s good for the team’s morale, especially the way they’ve been playing.”
Bruce Burish tied for medallist honors with a 36, but the Mustang putting suffered down the stretch.
“They have a great team and they played a good match,” said LH coach Don Crawford. “We made too many mental mistakes.”
There was a three-way tie for second place at Mapletown’s Zach Cumberland, Joel Kovach and LH’s Matt Hoover each carded 38s.
Santino Martichello and Fred David tied for third place with 40s.
Other Mapletown scorers were Don Hillenbrant (41), Jesse Boord (50) and Ethan Kovach (43).
Maria Battaglia (44) and Matt McCabe (49) also finished for the Mustangs, who lost their first match of the season.
“They’ll bounce back,” Crawford said.
Elizabeth-Forward 209, Uniontown 215 – Seth Rockwell shot an even par round of 36, but Elizabeth-Forward rallied and pulled away with the non-section win over Uniontown (3-4,3-6).
Elizabeth-Forward’s second and third players, Justin Yasko (39) and R.J. Danko (39) rounded out the top three places on the front nine at Butler G.C.
Red Raider golfers Josh Miller (42), David Bobish (43), Jeff Kitta (52), Nick Meucci (47) and Josh Fronczek (47) also turned in rounds.
Other E-F golfers included Tom Kudla (45), Blaze Labrosse (49), Grant Bleil (42) and Justin Lizik (45).
Girls soccer
Connellsville 2, Laurel Highlands 1 – Lindsey O’Donnell and Paige Puskar traded roles on both Connellsville goals as the Falcons edged past Laurel Highlands in Section 6-AAA action Wednesday.
O’Donnell scored the Lady Falcons first goal on the Puskar assist at the 25:00 mark in the first half.
It was Puskar’s turn at the 28:00 mark in the second half on the O’Donnell assist.
Katie Macioce had the lone goal for the Fillies in the second half on a penalty kick at the 34:00 mark in the second half.
Connellsville goalkeeper Katrina Kelly posted 11 saves and LH goalie Staci Ridley totaled nine saves.
Next up on the Connellsville (2-2, 3-2) schedule is Ringgold Friday starting at 3:30 p.m.
Girls tennis
Hempfield 4, Connellsville 1 – Amy Lucas turned in the only Connellsville victory in the third singles match with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Lauren Finoli, but the day belonged to Hempfield (5-0) as they handed the Falcons (0-4, 1-4) their fourth section loss at home.
In the first singles match, Hempfield’s Cara Haines defeated Megan Parsons by the scores of 6-4, 6-2.
Connellsville’s Lauren Hartz gave Alyssa Lerew trouble in the second singles match, but Lerew emerged victorious with the scores 6-3, 7-6 and 7-3 in the tiebreaker.
Hempfield’s Jamie Thompson and Chelsey Price struggled for their first doubles victory over Miranda Hughes and Laura Husband 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1.
The team of Alexis Cup and Mary Paulsinelli made quick work of Connellsville’s Kayla Naugle and Heather Hagner (6-1, 6-2) in the second doubles match.
Brownsville 4, Derry 1 – The Brownsville girls tennis team extended its record to 3-2 overall with a Section 1-AA victory over host Derry.
Bethany Seelye kicked things off for the Lady Falcons (3-2) with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ashley Bosco in the first singles match.
Teammate Kelly Davison made quick work of Lynn Barchesky (6-2, 6-1) in the second singles match and Becky Barnhart made it a clean sweep in the singles matches with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Carrie Reiss.
Brownsville’s Amanda Johnson and Samantha Bochna downed Ashley Kuhns and Amanda Wolf with the scores of 6-3, 4-6 and 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
Derry’s lone score came in the final doubles match as Nicola Scipio and Jessica Cogan defeated Kalie Davis and Sarah Mathianas 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 and 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
Girls volleyball
Laurel Highlands 3, Brownsville 0 – Samantha Zavachen had six kills and six blocks en route to a shutout victory over Brownsville in non-section action.
The game scores were 25-9, 25-10 and 25-16.
Teammate Demi Phillipy recorded seven kills.
The Fillies (2-1, 0-1) host Albert Gallatin today.
The LH junior varsity girls also emerged victorious as they won 2-1 (25-14, 25-9).
Beth-Center 3, Carmichaels 0 – Lauren Golden led with 16 service points and 12 kills as Beth-Center rolled to an easy 3-0 win over visiting Carmichaels (25-15, 25-17, 25-5).
Katilyn Bowen recorded 14 kills and Laura Plitt added 12 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs’ junior varsity team downed Carmichaels 2-1 (25-18, 25-15, 15-13).
Undefeated Beth-Center (3-0, 2-0) travels to Fort Cherry today starting at 6 p.m.
Frazier 3, California 1 – Emily Null led with 13 service points and 10 kills, as Frazier extended its record to 3-1 overall with a win over visiting California (25-19, 25-20, 25-19, 25-16).
Kate Oldham had 12 kills, Ashley Madorma 10 service points and Rachel Hudik added 24 assists.
California’s Kelly Porter led with 10 service points.
Women’s tennis
California University of Pa. 6, West Liberty 3 – The top three players in the California singles lineup, sophomore Inga Chilingaryan along with juniors Katie Anderson and Jessica Brown all picked up victories Tuesday as the Vulcans opened the 2005 fall women’s tennis season with a win at West Liberty.
California claimed two of the three doubles matches to take the lead into the singles competition. Chilingaryan and Anderson combined for a shutout win at No. 1 doubles while Brown and Melissa Anderson posted an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
Chilingaryan, playing the No. 1 singles position, and Brown at No. 3, each dropped the first set before rallying to post singles wins.
Anderson cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Senior Daniella Zavallos also needed three sets to capture the victory at No. 6 singles.
Women’s volleyball
California University of Pa. 3, Edinboro 0 – California junior and Jefferson-Morgan graduate Shanna Yourchik had nine kills and four block assists while classmate Amanda Evans posted a team-high 14 kills and a .500 hitting percentage to lead the Vulcans to a shutout victory in the first PSAC West match of the season.
The Vulcans improved to 10-0 overall this season, 1-0 in the PSAC West, with a 30-21, 30-24 and 30-27 triumph over the Fighting Scots (6-7, 0-1 PSAC West).
Cal, which finished second in the 2004 NCAA regional tournament, is off to its best start under fourth-year head coach Melissa Myers.
Also contributing for the offense for the Vulcans were junior Allison Liptak with nine kills and senior setter Aimee Helbig with 36 assists.
Joining Yourchik on the defense were seniors Jessica Brown and Katie Barker, each with 10 digs.
Women’s soccer
Indiana University of Pa. 5, California University of Pa. 1 – Indiana junior Shana Speece scored what proved to be the game-winning goal midway through the first half, then contributed to a pair of scores in the second half to lead the Indians (4-1-1, 1-0-1 PSAC West) to a 5-1 PSAC West women’s soccer victory at California Tuesday.
The Vulcans outshot the visiting Indians by a 13-9 margin, but sophomore Michelle Ewig was the only Cal player to find the back of the net.
Ewig’s team-best third goal of the season, 11 minutes into the match, erased a 1-0 IUP lead. Vulcan junior Tessa Babik contributed her team-leading second assist of the season and a career-best six points this season. Babik and Ewig are tied for the team’s scoring lead.
Speese broke the 1-1 tie with an unassisted goal at the 25-minute mark, then added another unassisted tally and an assist in the second half as the Indians pulled away for the win.
Men’s soccer
Bethany 2, Waynesburg 0 – The Waynesburg College men’s soccer team suffered its second 2-0 shutout of the season when it ran into Presidents’ Athletic Conference leader Bethany Tuesday.
After six contests this fall, the Bison still feature an unblemished record and limited the Yellow Jackets to seven shots.
The game remained scoreless until the 62nd minute when Sean Esterbauer netted his third goal on the season to put Bethany on top 1-0. With just 90 seconds remaining, teammate Lavel Williams sealed the victory for the Bison as he scored an unassisted goal.
Bethany hit up the Yellow Jackets for 22 shots in the contest with the bulk of the attempts directed to freshman goalie Matt Lamp, who recorded seven saves in nearly 81 minutes of action.
Waynesburg (3-3-1, 0-1-1) continues conference play Saturday when they travel to face the Wolverines of Grove City for a 2 p.m. start. Grove City defeated Waynesburg in both meetings last season with both wins being decided by one goal.
