Padres 5, Giants 5 SAN FRANCISCO – Brian Giles tiebreaking single with two outs in the top of the 10th inning gave San Diego a 5-4 victory over San Francisco on Wednesday.

The first-place Padres rallied to avoid a sweep and extended their lead over San Francisco to six games in the NL West.

Phillies 12, Braves 4

PHILADELPHIA – Reserve infielder Ramon Martinez hit his first career grand slam to lead Philadelphia to its third straight victory and fifth in six games. The Phillies entered the game one game behind Florida in the NL wild-card race.

Nationals 6, Mets 3

NEW YORK – Preston Wilson and Vinny Castilla hit consecutive homers in the fifth inning to lead Washington, which has won the first two games of a six-game road trip after losing five of six.

Yankees 6, Devil Rays 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Derek Jeter hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the seventh inning, leading the New York Yankees past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to remain 21/2 games behind first-place Boston in the AL East and one back of Cleveland in the wild-card race.

Indians 6, Athletics 4

CLEVELAND – Ronnie Belliard’s three-run homer in the seventh inning gave Cleveland the victory that kept Indians in front in the AL wild-card race.

Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 3

TORONTO – David Ortiz hit his career-high 42nd home run for the Red Sox, who remained 21/2 games in front of New York in the AL East.
