Arnold, Shaw area’s latest 300 bowlers

By Strikes And Spares 5 min read

The commercial for the latest shopping mall in Pittsburgh has aired many times on our local channels. What inspires me is the fact that they had the foresight to build a bowling alley within the mall. This is noteworthy because they did not install a putting green, a shooting gallery or batting cages, all of which you would not expect to see in a mall any more than a bowling alley. Malls are built around what will attract people, and the financial people behind those decisions do not make those choices lightly. To recognize the sport of bowling as a significant drawing card, gives one more endorsement of our sport in today’s vast sporting arena. With that in mind let’s see who is making their scores known this week.

A few scores came in after I submitted the column last week. So, to give those bowlers their time, we will check their lane action out first.

From Manor Lanes in the Highlander League, John Buhovecky scored a 716 series. Sonny Yowler polished a 664 series. John Buchovecky also scored high game with a 258 and Wiley Gambrel tallied up a 245.

In last week’s action from Fairbank Bowling Center, Tuesday Night Men’s League, Travis Petty smashed a 692 and Jim McIntosh found the pocket more than once for a 696. In the Thursday Night Mixed League, Patty Kmetz had to be happy with a 642 series and 269 game.

Okay, now we are up to this week in bowling. I had a chance to talk to Don Davison the other day. Don has more stories and bowlers that he is hoping we can get into print. When we can work it out, we will bring those gems of the bowling world your way.

The email was smoking this week. Many scores came in from all over the area. Unfortunately, we only have so much column space to use. The fairest way is to list the highest series and games sent in by the proprietors.

This week at Fairbank Bowling Center Lisa Mazurek made the pins fly with her score of 618 in the Sunday Night Mixed League. Tuesday night and George Arnold joined the ranks of the 300 bowlers on his way to a 760 series. It has been a while since we had a 300 bowler, good job George. Fellow bowler in the Tuesday Night Men’s is Tom Palaisa who came so close with his 299 and a 748 series. Steve Gizesiak and Jim McIntosh both did their part in keeping things rolling with a 719 series for Steve and a 705 for Jim.

Gudac Lanes is starting their Junior League on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The league is open to any junior ages 4 through high school. Anyone falling in that range is encouraged to call the center or check the web site for more information www.gudac.com.

Gudac’s high games and series reads like a who’s who from “Strikes and Spares.” High series for the men included Abe Franks’ 722 and Russell Staley’s 681. High games listed Abe Franks again with a 267, and Dennis Swaney 267.

The women of Gudac Lanes also turned in strong scoring. High series for the women begins with Pat Bandini’s 609and Monica Dubos’ 566. The high game for the ladies recognizes Jo Dee Molish at 240 as the leader with Jenn Zilka knocking on the door with a 234.

Klondike Lanes keeps the scoring going with the Monday men’s scores of Jim Preston at 664 and Rich Burnsworkth with a 648. High game honors go to Jim Preston with his 255 while Bob Rohland smacked a 237.

The Tuesday Night Ladies at Klondike turned in high series for Karen Berish with a 476, Kendra Guthrie had a 483, and Joan Young finished with a 482. The honors for high game for the ladies go to Joan Young (200) and Bonny Burnsworth (183).

The Wednesday Night Men give us Rocky Conners with a 739 series, Jim Preston again make a strong showing with a 725, Jamie Lawrence smoked a 713. High game laurels go to Jamie Lawrence with his 279. Rich Bursnworth and Rocky Connors both scored 277.

The Friday Night Mixed has Casey Duncan with a 700 series and Larry Williams posting high game with a 233.

Manor Lanes has their list of winners ready for this week. In the Monday Trio, Alan Scabis turned in a 704, Kevin Fasulkey a 728 and we need to mention that Dave Show brings another 300 to the column, finishing the round off with 771. Ed Floyd and Gary George both nailed 259s in league action. The Majors at Manor brings Bob Sible with a 246 and Dom Coville a 24.

The Tuesday Universal brings us Ed Floyd’s 682. The Thursday Manor Mix lists Chris Raffle with a 695 series. The Thursday Niters take us to Big Al D’Andrea with a 268 and 714 series, followed by Rich Glover’s 663-pin dance. To finish Manor off the H&H league shows Ron “Ozzie” Osborne with high game of 258 and Jay Locke a 650 series

I better finish this before the editors go crazy trying to figure how they are going to fit this in the space allotted to me.

Have a great week and take a friend to the lanes with you.
