California loses to Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) – Brian Boland’s threw for two touchdowns and 259 yards as Monmouth rallied for a 16-15 win over California University of Pa. on Saturday. Monmouth (2-1) was trailing midway through the fourth quarter when Chris Reed jarred the ball loose from Antoine Bagwell, and the Hawks it on the Vulcans 4-yard line. After a rushing play lost two yards, Boland threw a 6-yard scoring strike to Adam San Miguel to tie the game. Fred Weingart’s extra point then gave the Hawks the lead for good.

Monmouth had jumped out to an early 9-0 lead in the first quarter. After scoring a safety on a muffed punt by the Vulcans (2-1), the Hawks took the free kick and went 78 yards in 13 plays, concluding the drive with a 10-yard pass from Boland to Bobby Smith.

The Vulcans responded quickly, though, as Bagwell ran 87 yards for a touchdown on their next offensive play. They then took a 15-9 lead early in the second quarter when Joe Ruggiero threw an 8-yard scoring pass to Marcellus Garner.Jordan opened scoring with a 13-yard run in the first quarter, then connected on an 18-yard pass to Tony Mitchell and on an 19-yard pass to Derek Thompson in the second quarter.

Seton Hill had 371 yards in total offense. Gordon led with 110 yards on 19 carries.

Ohio Dominican had 409 yards in total offense, including 343 yards in the air. Mills led with 54 yards on 15 carries.
