Mapletown golfers stay unbeaten, set course record at Rohanna’s GC Mapletown remained unbeaten, and set a course-record in the process, with a Division II, Section 8 victory over Charleroi at Rohanna’s Golf Course.
Playing from the white tees, the Maples (10-0, 8-0) fired a 168. They were led by Joel Kovach’s 3-under par 30, while Jesse Boord also came in under par with a 32.
Cory Dillinger added a 1-over par 34, with Zach Cumberland and Ethan Kovach finishing with 36s.
Don Marozza’s 3-over par 36 led Charleroi (5-6, 3-5).
Laurel Highlands 183, Mount Pleasant 210 – Five Mustangs shot sub-40 rounds, led by Santino Marchitello and Matt Hoover, in Division I, Section 2 action at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
Hoover and Marchitello each fired even-par 35s on Duck Hollow’s front nine, as Laurel Highlands remained unbeaten in section play (9-0).
“It was a great win tonight,” said LH coach Don Crawford. “It gives us a big boost. It’s pretty nice for a coach to be able to throw out a 40 for his high score. If the kids keep shooting like, they can win it all.”
Bruce Burish came in 1-over par 36, while senior Andrew Mitrisin, playing in his first match, was three over. Fred David rounded out the scoring with a 49.
Uniontown 197, Albert Gallatin 203 – Seth Rockwell shot a 1-over par 36 to pace the Red Raiders to a Division I, Section 2 win over the Colonials.
Josh Miller added a 39, followed by David Bobish (38), Cory Over (41) and Sean Hughes (43).
Matt Shay paced the Colonials with a 2-over 37. He was followed by Brett DiDominic (39), Tom Corazzi (40), Jake Magerko (43) and Kevin Uglik (44).
Uniontown improves to 4-6 overall and 4-5 in section play, while Albert Gallatin drops to 7-2 in the section.
Connellsville 186, Waynesburg Central 214 – Jonathan Luczka fired a 1-over par 34 to help life the Falcons past the Raiders in Division I, Section 2 action at Rohanna’s Golf Course.
Shane Cali added a 37, followed by Cody Boors (38), Tyler Nichelson (38) and Devin Keno (39).
Zach Schloemer shot a low-round 33 for Waynesburg (0-11, 0-9). Rachel Rohanna added a 37, followed by Anthony Jarrell (43), Joe Moore (49) and Matt Fox (52).
Connellsville improves to 7-2, both overall and in the section.
The Vikings’ Scott Bando tied Hoover and Marchitello for low-scoring honors with a 35.
Geibel Catholic 185, Jeannette 236 – James McGrath fired a 2-under par 32 to lead the Gators past the Jayhawks in Division II, Section 8 at action at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
Philip Lucostic and Brandon Noonan each added 37s, while Ero Vignali came in at 39 and Edward Spotts 40.
Geibel improves to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in section play.
Sean Gregory paced Jeannette with a 43, followed by Elliott Fejes (46), Anthony Luhovey (47), Jeremy Spor (49) and Mike Priola (51).
Geibel hosts Mapletown Thursday at Pleasant Valley.
Jefferson-Morgan 206, California 240 – Chad Kokoska shot a 2-over par 38 to pace the Rockets in their Division II, Section 8 match at Greene County Country Club.
Zack Basinger added a 40, while Ian Lawrence (41), Rob DeHaas (43) and Matt Kokoska (44) rounded out the scoring. Dylan Blosser shot a 44 as well.
Josh Saxe led California (1-9, 1-8) with a 42, followed by Matt Porter (45), Frank Turosek (48), Travis Van Olst (52) and Derek Wible (53).
Jefferson-Morgan improves to 8-2 overall and 7-2 in section play.
Washington 228, Carmichaels 230 – Brett Ross fired the day’s best round, a 1-over par 38, to lead the Prexies past the Mikes in Division II, Section 8 action at Carmichaels Golf Course.
Dan Lasko paced Carmichaels with a 4-over 37. The Mikes remain winless, falling to 0-12 overall and 0-8 in section play.
Washington’s Bob Hasson came in at 44, followed by Brendon Bell (46), Drew Presto (50) and Mike Dameron (50). The Prexies improve to 4-6 overall and 3-5 in section play.
Following Lasko were the Mikes’ Jeff McWilliams (46), Justin Phillips (46), Pete Putila (47) and Travis Prodan (50).
Frazier 220, Southmoreland 234 – Craig Miller fired a low-round 3-over par 39 to lead the Commodores in Division II, Section 2 action on the front nine at Linden Hall Golf Course.
Marcus Wingrove was next at 42, followed by Brian Null (46), Mike Onusko (46) and John Shandor (47).
Frazier improves to 4-9 overall and 2-6 in Division 2, Section 2 play.
Jared Watkiss and Taylor Campbell paced Southmoreland (6-3 in section play) with 44s, while Nick Hoburn came in with a 48. Nate Hoburn and Jeff Crane both shot 49s.
Girls Volleyball
Geibel Catholic 3, West Greene 0 – Chelsey Kreinbrook had 21 assists and 11 service points to lift the Lady Gators past the Lady Pioneers in
Caitlin Solan added 16 service points and five attacks for the Lady Gators, which improved to 4-0, both overall and in section play.
Natalie Hozak chipped in 14 attacks, while Abbie Renze had 19 digs.
West Greene falls to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in section play.
Frazier 3, Duquesne 0 – Rachel Hudik had eight service points, and Kristen Miller added seven to lift the Lady Commodores past the Lady Dukes in Section 6-A action.
Frazier (5-1, 4-0) won by scores of 25-12, 25-8 and 25-19.
Elizabeth-Forward 3, Brownsville 0 – The Lady Warriors swept past the visiting Lady Falcons in Section 5-AA action.
Elizabeth-Forward won by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-17.
Emily Lucosh had six kills for Brownsville (1-5, 0-4), while Angela Allamon added five digs.
Trinity 3, Albert Gallatin 0 – The Lady Hillers had an easy time with the host Lady Colonials in Section 2-AAA action.
Trinity won by scores of 25-6, 25-3 and 25-10.
Albert Gallatin drops to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in section play.
Chartiers Valley 3, Waynesburg Central 0 – The Lady Colts breezed past the host Lady Raiders in straight sets in Section 4-AA action.
Chartiers Valley won by scores of 25-9, 25-16 and 26-24.
Waynesburg drops to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in section play.
Chartiers-Houston 3, Beth-Center 1 – The Lady Buccaneers used four sets to get past the Lady Bulldogs in Section 5-A play.
Chartiers-Houston won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-16. Beth-Center stayed alive with a 25-18 third-set victory, before C-H won the match, 25-20.
Beth-Center’s Farah Sckena had 10 kills and nine digs, while Amanda Bolen added 16 assists and Laurel Golden chipped in seven blocks.
Chartiers-Houston improves to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in section play, while Beth-Center drops to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in section play.
Canon-McMillan 3, Laurel Highlands 1 – Deffie Heffey paced the Lady Big Macs with 17 service points in a Section 3-AAA victory over the visiting Fillies.
Canon-McMillan and Laurel Highlands split the first two games, with C-M winning the opener, 25-17, and LH responding with a 25-22 win. The Lady Big Macs won the final two sets, 25-15 and 25-6.
Brittany Taylor had nine kills for the winners, while Loretta Wallace had eight kills.
For Laurel Highlands, Jessica Zavatchen had 16 service points and eight assists, while Jessica Galica added eight kills.
Canon-McMillan improves to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in section play, while Laurel Highlands drops to 3-1 overall and 1-2 in section play.
Jefferson-Morgan 3, Mapletown 0 – Halie Hawk had 13 service points to lead the Lady Rockets past the visiting Lady Maples in Section 6-A action.
Rachel Weaver added six kills for the winners, which improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in section play.
Jefferson-Morgan won by scores of 25-7, 25-16 and 25-18.
Mapletown drops to 1-2, both overall and in the section.
California 3, Avella 0 – Amanda Bilitski had 12 service points, including six aces, to lift the Lady Trojans past the visiting Lady Eagles in Section 5-A action.
California won by scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-12.
Girls Tennis
Brownsville 3, Washington 2 – Trailing 2-1 after singles play, the Lady Falcons won both doubles matches en route to a 3-2 win over the visiting Prexies in non-section action.
Brownsville’s Bethany Seelye won at No. 1 singles over Julie McDermott, 6-2, 6-3, but Kelly Davison dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Kelly Wall and Becky Barnhart lost after an injury default to Jessica Pest.
The Lady Falcons’ team of Samantha Bochna defeated Mary Patterson and Joy Powell, 6-4, 6-4, while Sarah Mathianas and Amanda Smith topped the duo of Robin Corse and Mandy Bedillion, 6-4, 6-0.
Brownsville improves to 4-2.
Boys Cross Country
Frazier 23, Fort Cherry 32; McGuffey 27, Frazier 28 – Kenny Miller and Matt Carson had top-five finishes to help the Commodores gain a split in a Section 3-AAA triangular meet at Sampey Park.
Fort Cherry’s Andrew Lucarini won the meet with a time of 17:27, with Miller second at 18:53. McGuffey teammates Shea Gottschalk and Devin McGuire were third (19:10) and fourth (19:11), respectively, while Carson was fifth (19:38).
Frazier’s Merico Rudolph was No. 8 with a time of 21:28, with teammate Dave Genua No. 9, also coming in 21:28. The Commodores’ Donnie Strickler finished 11th, finishing in 21:57.
Frazier moves to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in section play.
Uniontown 22, West Mifflin 37 – The Titans’ Mike Smith won the race in 18:48, but the Red Raiders took the next three places to at home in Section 2-AAA action.
Derek Thomas finished second in 18:54 with Kyle Markwardt third in 19:30. Andy Naymick was fourth in 19:49. The Red Raiders (3-0, 5-0) placed seven runners in the top 10.
Elizabeth-Forward 26, Albert Gallatin 29; Ringgold 22, Albert Gallatin 35; Ringgold 24, Elizabeth-Forward 32 – The Colonials placed two runners in the top five, but came up short in the Section 2-AAA triangular meet at Albert Gallatin.
Lance Bryson finished third in a time of 20:50 for Albert Gallatin. Teammate Brad Zitney was fifth in a time of 21:17.
Albert Gallatin will run in the A.J. Everhart Invitational on Saturday morning at Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus.
Chartiers-Houston 15, Brownsville 50; Chartiers-Houston 20, Burgettstown 35; Burgettstown 15, Brownsville 50 – Chartiers-Houston’s Pete Humbert handily won the Section 3-AA triangular meet with a winning time of 18:46, almost two minutes ahead of teammate Steve Tresnoff, to lead the Bucs to a sweep.
Josh Stalvi was the first Falcon to cross the finish line in 12th place in a time of 25:07. California’s Michael Galis, running unaffiliated, finished fourth with a time of 21:57.
Brownsville falls to 0-4 in the section and 0-5 overall.
Girls Cross Country
Frazier 19, Fort Cherry 40; Frazier 24, McGuffey 35 – The Lady Commodores placed three runners in the top five to sweep a Section 3-AAA triangular meet at Sampey Park.
McGuffey’s Hillary Kazdrick won the meet with a time of 23:26, followed by Frazier’s Jessica Hudik, who came in with a time of 24:29.
Fort Cherry’s Brittany Smith was third, at 24:35, with the Lady Commodores’ Heather Priester fourth (24:36) and Jenna Boyles fifth (25:05).
Frazier’s Erin Sizemore was eighth with a time of 25:22, while teammate Joyce Carson was ninth in a time of 26:30.
The Lady Commodores improve to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in section play.
Uniontown 20, West Mifflin 41 – Mindy Argyle took first place for visiting West Mifflin, but Uniontown ran the table with the next five runners for a convincing Section 2-AAA home victory.
Chelsi Festa led the push home for the Lady Raiders, finishing second with a time of 24:16. Michelle Naymick was 14 seconds behind with teammate Stacey Lloyd slipping under 25 minutes at 24:52. B.J. Brame was next in 25:41 and Ellen Williams put the cap on the victory in sixth place in a time of 26:20.
Uniontown improves to 3-0 in the section and 5-0 overall.
Elizabeth-Forward 18, Albert Gallatin 41; Ringgold 15, Albert Gallatin 44; Elizabeth-Forward 26, Ringgold 29 – The visitors dominated the top 10 finishes in the Section 2-AAA triangular at Albert Gallatin.
Ringgold’s Loren Cortopassi won the race in 20:46. Abby Newman was the first Lady Colonial (0-4) to finish, placing 10th overall in a time of 25:43.
Brownsville 15, Chartiers-Houston 50; Brownsville 18, Burgettstown 37; Burgettstown 15, Chartiers-Houston 50 – The Lady Falcons had a pretty easy day of it in the Section 3-AA triangular at Chartiers-Houston, taking the top three spots to remain atop the section standings.
Brownsville’s Erika Coffey was the race winner in a time of 24:19. Beth-Center’s Chelsey Hunt was second in 25:11 and Jocelyn Dickey finished fourth, but neither factored into the scoring.
The Lady Falcons’ Melissa Pancratz was second in team scoring with teammate Betsy Johnson third.
Boys Soccer
Brownsville 5, Carmichaels 1 – Marc Mammarella scored a hat trick to lift the Falcons to an easy victory over the visiting Mikes in Section 5-AA action.
John Marcolini added a goal and assist for the Falcons, which won their first section game against four losses.
Brownsville’s Brandon Granato started the scoring off a corner kick with 29:36 remaining in the opening half. Mammarella’s first goal made it 2-0 three minutes later off an assist from Craig Everly, and his second goal, which was assisted by Jason Bella, came with 21:25 remaining in the half.
Carmichaels’ Adam Baker scored with 9:30 to play in the first half.
Jordan Sealy opened the scoring the second half, off an assist from Marcolini with 36:31 to play.
With 3:58 remaining, Mammarella completed his hat trick, scoring off a pass from Marcolini.
Brownsville had 30 shots on goal to Carmichaels’ 18. Falcons goalkeeper Josh Roberts stopped 11 shots, while Carmichaels’ Benjamin Neff had seven saves.
Laurel Highlands 6, Derry 3 – Six different players scored for the Mustangs in a 1-AA victory over the visiting Trojans.
Trailing 2-0, Laurel Highlands scored the next six goals to improve to 5-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the section.
Cory Borland put LH on the board off a penalty kick with 4:41 remaining in the first half.
Brett Workman then tied the game with 28:20 to play off an assist by Jarrett Pickens. Pickens gave Laurel Highlands its first lead when he scored off a Workman pass with 23:53 left in the second half.
The Mustangs made it 4-2 when Brian Lilley scored at the 13:39 mark off an assist from Borland, before Ryan Basescu scored at the 12:54 mark off a pass from Workman.
Matt Turco closed LH’s scoring when he took a pass from Borlan and scored with 10:22 remaining.
Both Borland and Workman wound up with three points.
Derry’s Corey Turnbull scored twice, including the first and last goal of the game.
Laurel Highlands goalkeeper Jordan Merchbaker had seven saves, while Derry’s net minder, Ben Castellani, stopped 11 shots.
The Mustangs had 27 shots on goal to Derry’s nine.
College baseball
Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus 6, Penn State-New Kensington 0 – Ryan Caringola (1-1) scattered seven hits and Phil Gratchic pounded out a double and three singles to lead the Roaring Lions to a WP-AC home win.
Justin Coffman drove in Penn State’s first run with a single in the second, and Richie Schleihauf doubled the advantage with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth. Gratchic blew the game open with a two-run double in the eighth. Schleihauf added an RBI single in the inning.
Justin Corso had a double and two singles while Bobby Fulton smacked a double and a single.
The Roaring Lions (7-2, 11-7) won three of four games on the road last weekend. Justin Coffman (2-1) was the winning pitcher in a 12-4 win over Penn State-Delaware, but the home team earned a split with an 8-2 win over Fayette.
A pair of seventh-inning rallies led the Roaring Lions to a doubleheader sweep Sunday, defeating Penn State-Abington 9-8 and 6-5. Bobby Fulton (1-0) and Bob Madison (3-0) were the winning pitchers.
