Jefferson-Morgan cruises past Frazier
JEFFERSON – After suffering a disheartening loss last week at Mapletown, Jefferson-Morgan was left with one question. How would they bounce back? The Rockets answered in a big way, as they cruised to a 41-0 victory over visiting Frazier Friday night at Parker Field.
In a game that was dominated by the Jefferson-Morgan offense, sophomore running back Justin Falcon gave the Rockets an early first-quarter lead, as he took a handoff from senior quarter back Josh Lawrence and scampered 16 yards for the opening score.
After both teams punted on ensuing possessions, the Rockets again went to the ground game as senior Justin Weaver went in from one yard with 3:34 remaining in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, it was Jarrod Moskola and J.W. Popielarcheck that led the way for the Rockets, as Moskola scored on touchdown runs of 25 and 48 yards to give the Rocket a 35-0 halftime lead.
Popielarcheck made the key play, as he cut loose for a 46-yard run to set up Moskola’s touchdown.
“We have about five running backs that can do the job,” Jefferson-Morgan head coach Jan Haiden said. “They ran hard tonight and made things happen.”
As great a night as it was for Jefferson-Morgan, Frazier struggled from the beginning.
The Commodores were stymied by a tough Rockets’ defense that yielded only two first downs and 42 total yards of offense the whole game.
“We had trouble on offense; it’s a tough situation when we can’t run the ball,” Frazier coach Lew Sweitzer said. “I have confidence in the kids. We have to right the ship, but we’ll have a good week of practice and get better.”
With key conference games remaining in the Tri-County South, anything is still possible for the Rockets, as they travel to Carmichaels next week to take on the Mikes.
“We look at games one week at a time,” Haiden said. “We have to improve every week and we have done that to this point. We have to keep getting better.”
The Rockets compiled 355 yards rushing in the game and had two players reach the end zone twice, as Moskola and Falcon both had two touchdown runs.
The win leaves the Rockets with a 2-1 record in the Tri-County South Conference and an overall mark of 2-3.
Frazier fell to 0-3 in the conference and 1-4 overall. The Commodores travel to Geibel next Saturday to take on the Gators.
