Uniontown boys shut out Geibel Catholic, 3-0 Nolan Rogers scored two goals for Uniontown en route to a 3-0 shutout victory over Geibel Catholic in non-section soccer action Saturday.
Ryan Robowski was first to find the back of the net for the Red Raiders on an unassisted goal.
After Rogers gave Uniontown a 2-0 lead at the half, he scored his second goal in the second half on an assist by Kyle Markwardt.
Darren Webster was in goal for Uniontown and recorded 10 saves. Geibel goalie Nick Molchan had eight saves.
Girls soccer
Connellsville 1, Yough 0 – Lindsay O’Donnell scored the lone goal for Connellsville at the 6:56 minute in the first half on a Brittany Guess assist, as the Lady Falcons shutout visiting Yough in Section 6-AAA action Saturday.
Connellsville goalkeeper Katrina Kelly recorded one save, while Yough keeper Jody Balko stopped 14 Lady Falcon attempts.
Connellsville is back in action at Elizabeth-Forward Monday starting at 4 p.m.
Jeannette 7, Geibel Catholic 3 – Jamie Morrison found the back of the net four times en route to a Section 1-AA victory over Geibel Catholic.
All of the Lady Jayhawk goals came before Geibel got on the scoreboard, as Morrison tallied three goals and Corinne Wolfe and Brittany Williams each scored in the first half.
Annie Kratz also scored for Jeannette.
Kaitlyn Fagan put the Lady Gators on the board with a goal in the 16th minute of the second half on a Liz Sunseri assist.
Fagan scored again on a penalty kick in the 14th minute, and Sunseri scored Geibel’s final goal in the 12th minute in the second half.
Geibel keeper Mary Beth Saluga totaled 14 saves and Jeannette’s Alycia Maceyko stopped eight Geibel shots.
Albert Gallatin 1, Uniontown 1 – Uniontown’s Devan Grote scored on an unassisted goal in the first half, and Sarah Fyock answered for Albert Gallatin in the second half as the Section 6-AAA contest ended in a tie.
Uniontown keeper Emily Brower posted 10 saves. The Lady Red Raiders attempted 18 shots on goal.
Waynesburg Central 2, Monessen 0 – Rebecca Rohanna scored in the seventh minute of the first half on the assist by Hanna Kirby and assisted on Lauren Patterson’s goal in the second half, as the Lady Raiders blanked Monessen in a Section 1-AA showdown Saturday.
Waynesburg goalkeeper Miatta Toothman posted 15 saves and Monessen’s Kelly Mernak recorded eight.
Geibel Catholic travels to Waynesburg (4-3, 5-4) at 7 p.m. Monday.
Women’s volleyball
California (Pa.) 3, Millersville 0; California (Pa.) 3, Cheyney 0 – California junior and Jefferson-Morgan graduate Samantha Yourchik had 15 kills and senior Jessica Brown had 14 to lead the Vulcans to PSAC crossover tournament victories over Millersville and Cheyney Saturday.
The Vulcans improved to 14-1 overall by defeating Millersville (30-24, 30-27, 30-15) and Cheyney (30-8, 30-9, 30-1).
In the victory over the Marauders, Brown had her 14 kills as well as 12 digs, two service aces and four block assists. Junior Amanda Evans led the Vulcans with six block assists and two solo blocks and chipped in with nine kills against MU.
Against Cheyney, Yourchick registered 15 kills and a .682 attack percentage, while freshman Mallory DeMarco added 10 service aces, 32 assists and shared team-high digs honors with five.
The Vulcans return to action Tuesday with a PSAC West match at Indiana, Pa.
Waynesburg Classic – The host Yellow Jackets split a pair of games in day two of the Waynesburg Classic, beating Susquehanna 3-0 (30-26, 30-20, 30-28) in their morning match before losing to Hiram 3-1 (30-27, 23-30, 12-30, 23-30).
After the tournament, Waynesburg’s record stands at 7-7 with its first conference match scheduled for Tuesday against Grove City.
Seniors Brittany Morrow and Kimberly Wilson each had eight kills in the win against the Crusaders. Morrow also paved the way defensively for Waynesburg, tallying 16 digs. Freshman Laurie Linder also reached double digits in digs with 12.
Also in the win over Susquehanna, Kaci Hlad registered eight kills, while setter Amanda Staudt contributed 32 assists.
In the afternoon match against Hiram, three Yellow Jackets tallied double digits in kills, led with 12 from Wilson. Morrow and Linder followed Wilson with 11 and 10, respectively.
Linder recorded a double-double against the Terriers, as she lead the Waynesburg attack with 18 digs in addition to 11 kills.
Senior Lauren Freeman tied Linder for the team lead in digs with 18.
The Yellow Jackets took a four-match split at the two-day, 10-team tournament.
Waynesburg open up Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Tuesday when it hosts Grove City at the Rudy Marisa Field House (6:30 p.m.).
Men’s soccer
California (Pa.) 2, West Chester 1 – Freshman Brian Braithwaite scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 60th minute to lift California (5-4-0, 4-3-0 PSAC) to a 2-1 PSAC victory over West Chester (4-4-2, 3-3-1 PSAC).
Sophomore John Pazehoski also scored for the Vulcans, his fourth of the season, as Cal extended its winning streak to four matches, all vs. PSAC foes.
Pazehoski’s goal in the 43rd minute gave the hosts a 1-0 halftime advantage. The play began when sophomore forward Evan Picard chested a long clearing pass to junior Emedin Sabic who found Pazehoski going in on goal.
Braithwaite’s score, off an assist by senior Camilo Hinestroza, gave the Vulcans a 2-0 lead.
West Chester answered with a score by Ryan Hunter, his first of the season, in the 75th minute. Junior Bill Harris assisted on Hunter’s score.
It was up to Cal’s defense, led by sophomore goalie Eric Greaves, to finish the victory. Greaves finished with three saves on nine WC shots. Golden Rams keeper Garrett Santoro was credited with five saves on 15 Cal attempts.
The Vulcans put their four-match win streak on the line Wednesday at East Stroudsburg (1 p.m.). Cal’s next home game is Oct. 1 against Shippensburg (3 p.m.).
Women’s soccer
Waynesburg 2, Thiel 0 – The Waynesburg College women’s soccer team extended its win streak to three games on Saturday when it posted a shutout over Thiel.
The win improved the Yellow Jackets’ overall record to 4-6-1 and was their first conference win of the season.
Waynesburg scored both of its goals during the last five minutes to give the Tomcats their seventh-straight defeat.
Senior Brittney Bennett, who entered the game as the leading goal scorer in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, scored the game’s first goal in the 86th minute when she beat Tomcat goalie Ashleigh Dunsmore on a penalty kick. Bennett now has six goals this season after scoring a trio of goals this week.
Bennett added to her season point total less than a minute later when she assisted on an insurance goal by freshman Juliann Amato, who ranks second on the Yellow Jackets with 12 points.
Waynesburg dominated the game offensively, posting 25 shots compared to just two by Thiel.
Goalkeepers Amy Mills and Emily Byers split the shutout for the Yellow Jackets.
Waynesburg returns to action Tuesday when they host Chatham College for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup. The Yellow Jackets have combined to score 13 goals in their last two meetings against the Cougars.
College cross country
St. Vincent Invitational – California junior and Belle Vernon graduate Ryan Marovec placed fourth overall, and Connellsville graduate Ken King finished sixth to lead the Vulcan men’s cross country team to third place at the St. Vincent Invitational cross country meet Saturday.
The Vulcans placed third in the men’s 11-team standings with 84 points, trailing just Clarion (30 points) and Davis & Elkins (63 points). Clarion also won the women’s chase with 24 points while Cal women placed ninth out of 11 teams with 278 points.
Marovec covered the 8K course in 28:02, while King was 21 seconds behind. Freshman John Gould (17th), Frank Moxie (28th) and Neal King (29th) completed Cal’s scoring.
In the women’s race, senior Emily Zeigler was Cal’s first finisher, crossing the line in 61st place, followed closely by freshman Kirston Zajaz, who finished 63rd.
Also scoring in the Vulcans’ pack were senior Kristy Hall (68th), freshman Anna Permyshkin (71st) and sophomore Melanie Ruch (86th).
College baseball
Penn College 3, Penn State-Fayette 2; Penn College 7, Penn State-Fayette 5 – Bobby Fulton and Jared Early homered for Penn State Fayette, but host Penn College took two games from the Roaring Lions Saturday.
Fulton had a solo home run in the second inning and doubled in the fourth and accounted for both of Fayette’s scores.
Christian Worth (3-1) hurled the win for Penn College. He went the distance and allowed all six Penn State hits.
Justin Coffman (2-2) came away with the loss. He worked five innings and struck out three.
Jim Prosser and Early also doubled.
In the nightcap, Penn jumped out to an early 5-1 lead through the first two innings and held on despite a four-run Penn State fifth inning.
Early’s solo home run came in the second inning. Teammate Rich Schleihauf added a double and a single.
Austin Upright (3-0) went on record as the winning pitcher as he went the distance striking out three and allowed eight hits.
Losing pitcher Ryan Caringola (1-2) worked six and two-thirds innings and scattered four hits.
