Noonan hot as Geibel Catholic golfers clinch WPIAL playoff spot Brandon Noonan fired a 2-under-par 34 as Geibel Catholic clinched a WPIAL playoff spot with a 193-210 victory over host Jefferson-Morgan in a Division II, Section 8 boys golf match at Greene County Country Club on Tuesday.

The Rockets’ loss also put Mapletown in postseason. The Maples and Geibel (10-1, 9-1) are tied for first place in the section. The top two spots qualify for the playoffs.

Jefferson-Morgan coach John Curtis, whose team is third in the standings, believes both squads above him can make some noise in the postseason.

“Geibel and Mapletown are good teams,” said Curtis, whose Rockets host the Maples at Rohanna’s Golf Course at 3 p.m. on Thursday. “Geibel is solid, one through six, and they played pretty outstanding today. I think both of those teams have a chance to do well in the playoffs. They’re pretty experienced and they both worked hard to get where they’re at.”

As for his own team, which still has an outside shot at the playoffs, Curtis sees a bright future.

“We could’ve played a little better today, but we only have one senior and we’re doing pretty well overall,” said Curtis, whose team is 9-4 overall and 7-3 in the section. “I hope we’ll be back pretty strong next year.”
