H-S Touchdown Club

By The 2 min read

Geisel is getting tougher to catch A few players are trying to make a move, but it will be tough to catch Mapletown’s Ryan Geisel in the Herald-Standard Touchdown Club scoring race.

Geisel, the speedy Maples’ running back, added two more touchdowns in last week’s comeback win over Carmichaels. He has crossed the goal line 13 times on the season, with 12 touchdowns and a two-point conversion, to give him 74 points, by far the highest score among area high school football players.

The winner of the Herald-Standard Touchdown Club will have his name engraved on a special plaque, which will stay in his school’s trophy case until next season. The winner, to be determined by points scored during the football regular season, also will receive a replica plaque to hang on his wall at home.

Jarrod Moskola of Jefferson-Morgan scored a couple of touchdowns, too last Friday to propel himself into second place with 50 points. He has scored eight touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

Third and fourth place below to the Waynesburg Central duo of Troy Cree (eight touchdowns) and J.D. Higgins (seven), with 48 and 42 points, respectively.

Three players have scored six touchdowns apiece, but California’s Donte Valentino also has a two-point conversion to put him at 38, while Laurel Highlands Jared Jodon and Connellsville’s Scott Jones are at 36. Jones doubled his total with three TDs in the Falcons’ 20-7 win over Norwin.

Making the biggest jump last week was Brownsville’s Joe Fieck, who scored four touchdowns in a 58-28 Brownsville win over East Allegheny. Fieck has scored five touchdowns on the season.

Brownsville’s Mark Mammarella is the leading scorer among kickers with two field goals and 10 extra points for 26 points, good enough for a tie for ninth with California’s Waugh Carter (four TDs and a two-point conversion).

But they all have a ways to go to catch Geisel, who seems to just cruise along, just like the 4-1 Maples.
