Jacobs wins two golds at Tri-State championships Laurel Highlands’ Breehana Jacobs won a pair of gold medals and set a new meet record at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association Outdoor Championships held at West Mifflin High School on Saturday.
Jacobs helped Ron Morris’ Fillies earn a third-place finish with 47 points in the 30-team girls division behind North Allegheny (64) and Bradford (62). Erie McDowell (37.5) and Mount Lebanon (34) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Jacobs won the 100 in 12.38 seconds with teammate Aleesha Washington placing third with a time of 13.01.
Jacobs set her meet record in the 200, breaking the tape in :25.47, while the Fillies’ Molly Macioce finished eighth in :29.49.
Jacobs also garnered first-place and fifth-place medals in the relays. She teamed up with Meg Mahoney, Washington and Macioce to win the 400 relay, and combined with Mahoney, Macioce and Aliana Vignali to take fifth in the 1,600 relay.
Casey Conn picked up a pair of medals for the Fillies by placing fourth in the pole vault (9 feet) and eighth in the triple jump (32-5.5).
Coach Bob Costello’s Mustangs took home a pair of medals also.
Jared Jodon set a school record and tied a meet record in winning the pole vault, clearing the bar at 15-9.
Jeff Palya placed third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:40.3.
Girls softball
Geibel Catholic 4, Brownsville 1 – Carrie Gessner allowed just one run in eight innings and Geibel Catholic broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the eighth inning to defeat host Brownsville in a non-section battle.
Mia White began the winning rally with a double, stole third and came home on Beth Novotny’s double for the game’s first run. Novotny was thrown out at third on Sabrina Szabo’s single, but Szabo eventually came around to score what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch. Erica Toth delivered a two-run double later in the inning.
Amber Didominic scored the Lady Falcons’ only run in the bottom of the eighth when she singled, stole second and scored on Nicole Kerestine’s RBI single.
Gessner allowed six hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
Jeana Rouse started for Brownsville and threw five scoreless frames with no walks and four strikeouts before being relieved by Stacey Knox, who kept the Lady Gators off the scoreboard for two more frames before surrendering the four runs in the eighth.
Szabo tripled and singled for Geibel Catholic, which also got a double and single each from White, Novotny and Toth.
Kerestine had two hits for coach Jane Bock’s Lady Falcons. Nicole Voytovich and Emily Lucosh each contributed a double.
Brownsville opens Section 2-AA play Monday at Fort Cherry. The Lady Gators travel to Uniontown for a non-section game on Wednesday.
Mapletown 6, Avella 2 – Jesse Boord and Ashley Menear homered to lead the Maples past the Eagles in non-section action.
Boord hit Mapletown’s first home run in five games when he connected for a three-run, first-inning shot that gave the Maples a 3-0 lead.
Mapletown (4-1) added another run in the bottom of the first inning when John Grim and Menear followed Boord’s home run with back-to-back doubles.
After Avella cut the hosts’ lead in half with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, the Maples picked up two insurance runs when Menear went deep with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
Starter Zach Cumberland picked up the win, working two hitless innings and striking out two.
Menear followed Cumberland and tossed three innings, allowing six hits and two runs.
Cory Dillinger and Boord finished up, each throwing an inning.
Mapletown opens Section 1-A play Monday, hosting West Greene at 4 p.m.
College baseball
Waynesburg 6, Thomas More 2; Waynesburg 4, Thomas More 1 – Mapletown graduate Drew Denham had two hits in each game as Waynesburg swept a PAC doubleheader from Thomas More at Madison Field.
Brian Gerginski also had two hits along with three RBIs and a run in the opener as Landon Sinclair allowed one earned run in tossing a five-hitter.
Denham singled twice and scored once, and Bryce Allen also had two hits and scored twice.
Justin Schrader gave up one unearned run in also firing a five-hitter in the second game. He struck out seven and walked two.
Denham ripped a pair of doubles, knocked in a run and scored a run in support of Schrader, and Phil Anderson contributed three hits, including a double, along with an RBI and a run.
The Yellow Jackets improve to 11-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the conference, while Thomas More falls to 12-5 and 3-3.
California 1, Clarion 0; California 18, Clarion 5 – California University of Pa. won a pitchers’ duel and a slugfest in sweeping a PSAC-West twinbill at Clarion.
The Vulcans improve to 13-11 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
PS Beaver 8, PS Fayette 3; PS Beaver 8, PS Fayette 1 – Penn State Beaver won a PSUAC twinbill at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
Jared Early and Bobby Fulton both doubled and singled for the Roaring Lions (0-7, 0-2) in the first game. Phil Gratchic took the loss.
Kyle Weaver was the winning pitcher. Pat Ringel and Dave Barber doubled for the visitors.
Early also doubled in the second game, but the only other two hits Fayette could manage were singles by Jim Prosser and Gratchic against winning pitcher Mike Ginand.
Ricky Wilson took the loss for the Roaring Lions, who travel to Butler for another doubleheader today at noon.
Women’s tennis
California 8, Millersville 1 – California University of Pa. won five of six singles matches and swept all three doubles matches in rolling past visiting Millersville.
Singles winners for the Vulcans were Inga Chilingaryan, Katie Anderson, Jessica Brown, Lauren Novey and Lindsay Mathieson.
Doubles winners for Cal (11-7) were Melissa Anderson and Chilingaryan, Brown and Katie Anderson, and Hovey and Mathieson.
Men’s tennis
Waynesburg 9, Westminster 0 – Waynesburg dominated host Westminster in a PAC match.
Winning in singles for the Yellow Jackets (3-4, 2-0) were Matt Otis, Brian McAnulty, Joe Koch, Kevin Houseknecht, Drew Slater and Dustin Cozad.
Winning in doubles for Wayensburg were Otis and McAnulty, Koch and Houseknecht, and Slater and Cozad.
College track
Waynesburg earns 10 medals – Laurel Highlands graduate Jerry Powell won the men’s discus for Waynesburg in the Westminster Invitational with a throw of 40.32 meters.
Uniontown graduate Becca Geisel placed third in the women’s long jump for the Lady Jackets.
Ivan Hawkins won the 100 and 200 for the Yellow Jackets. Also earning first-place medals for the Yellow Jackets were Brian Lucarelli in the 800, Shane Gottschalk in the 1,500, Dan Ross in the javelin and Ryan Devlin in the 10,000.
Lady Jacket winners were Denise Kennedy in the discus, Megan Grover in the 1,500 and Haley Hinds in the 3,000 steeplechase. April Loving was fourth in the 100.
Bota duo places – Bethany’s Emily Bota, a Laurel Highlands graduate, finished second in the 100 with a time of 13.55 seconds at the Westminster College Invitational.
Laurel Highlands graduate Alex Bota helped the Bethany men take first in the 400 relay with a time of :43.80.
