Baseball PS-Fayette wins first two

The Penn State-Fayette, The Eberly Campus baseball team picked up its first victories of the spring season by sweeping a doubleheader Sunday from Butler County Community College, 12-6 and 6-4.

The Roaring Lions pounded 13 hits in the first game, led by Chad Shroyer’s solo home run in the seventh inning. He also doubled.

Teammate John Pochron drilled two doubles and added a single, while Bob Fulton ripped a two-bagger and singled twice.

Winning pitcher Ryan Caringola (1-0) went the distance, striking out three and walking five.

In the nightcap, Pochron doubled and singled, while teammates Matt Fanase and Jamie Kowalczyk both singled twice. Jared Early added a double.

Brent Wilson (1-0) was the winning pitcher. He scattered eight hits and struck out one.

Penn State is back in action Tuesday at home against Penn State-Harrisburg.

Track & field

Falcons have good day

Connellsville athletes had a good day Saturday at the Tri-State Coaches Association Track & Field Championship at West Mifflin.

Heather Zelinsky won the girls’ javelin with a throw of 116 feet, 4 inches.

Scott Jones had the top performance for the Falcons, finishing second in the 110 high hurdles in 15.59 seconds.

Several other Falcons finished in the top eight, including Lance Straughters (100, 5th, 11.76), Rod Richter (discus, 3rd, 144-5), Stu Ohler (javelin, 8th, 152-31/2) and Aaron Meade (triple jump, 6th, 41-41/2).

Waynesburg Central also had several athletes place, including a pair of finishes in the top eight by Jereme Yoders in the shot put (7th, 47-23/4) and discus (8th, 136-2).

The Raiders’ Jake Raddish tied for fourth in the high jump with a best effort of 5-9 .

Morgan Bland was eighth in the pole vault at 8-6.
