Baseball Hedrick player of week
California University of Pa. sophomore Robert Hedrick was named the PSAC West baseball Player of the Week after hitting .471, with a .550 on-base percentage, and leading the Vulcans to five wins in six games.
Hedrick was 8-for-17 with three walks, a double, triple and home run last week. He also scored six runs, knocked in eight runs and stole three bases.
Hedrick wasn’t able to add ot his statistics on Monday, however, as Cal’s doubleheader against West Liberty was rained out.
The Vulcans (13-11, 4-0) travel to Wheeling Jesuit for a twinbill on Wednesday.
Denham hitter of week
Mapletown graduate and Waynesburg College outfielder Drew Denham was selected as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week.
Denham started all three games at leftfield for the Yellow Jackets against the Thomas More Saints while posting at least two hits and a run scored in each contest.
The sophomore posted team-best marks for batting average (.583), hits (7), runs (12), stolen bases (3), total bases (10), slugging (.833) and on-base percentage (.583) during the series.
Through 19 games this season, Denham is hitting .488 (20-for-41) and leads the team and the conference with 11 stolen bases. He currently ranks second on the team with 20 hits and 26 total bases and is third on the squad with 13 runs scored.
The Yellow Jackets travel to Latrobe, Pa., Thursday to face St. Vincent for a 1 p.m. start.
Softball
Metcalf paces W&J
Carmichaels graduate and Washington & Jefferson third baseman Melissa Metcalf paced the offense with three RBI as the Presidents split a doubleheader with Marietta Sunday.
The Pioneers (20-2) took game one (5-1), but W&J rallied for an 8-3 eight-inning victory in the nightcap.
The Presidents return to action Wednesday as they host Carlow in a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
Cal drops twinbill
California senior Becky Mezyk had two hits, including her second home run of the season, two runs scored and three RBI in a doubleheader at Lock Haven Sunday, but the Bald Eagles swept the PSAC West twinbill vs. the Vulcans.
The Vulcans even their record at 8-8, 2-2 in the PSAC West.
Cal returns to action with a pair of road PSAC West twinbills this weekend at Edinboro (Friday) and Slippery Rock (Saturday).
Golf
Vulcans finish 5th
California freshman Simone DeSouza tied for 12th individually and led Cal to fifth place in the nine-team Bellarmine Invitational.
DeSouza carded a 26-over-par 170 in the two-day event to tie Tara Ulmer of Souther Indiana for 12th place.
Cal’s Amy Vellinga was 23rd (178), Sandra Gonzalez tied for 25th place (182) and Melissa Davis tied for 28th (183).
Falcon Classic
The Falcon Golf Classic, a 4-person golf scramble, will be held June 10 starting at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley C.C. This outing will serve as a primary fundraiser to benefit the Connellsville High School Golf Team for the upcoming high school season.
The cost is $75 per golfer or $300 per foursome.
Businesses interested in sponsoring individual hole prizes or making a donation to benefit the golf team should contact Terry Boors, Falcon Golf Classic coordinator at 724-323-7140.
Registration applications for interested teams and/or individuals can be obtained at local Dairy Queen franchises in Uniontown and Connellsville, Graphic Images of Connellsville, Craig’s Appliances or the Pleasant Valley Country Club Pro Shop.
Deadline to enter is June 2 or until 120 slots are filled for prospective golfers wishing to participate in the outing.
