Uniontown sweeps track meet against Elizabeth-Forward
Doug Nehls posted individual victories in the discus (111 feet, 10 inches) and shot put (43 feet, 1 1/2 inches) as Uniontown made quick work of visiting Elizabeth-Forward 126-24 in boys track & field Section 2-AAA action Thursday.
Teammate Steve Lee also finished first in the long jump (20 feet, 1 inch) and the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 0 inches.
Mac Festa was also a multiple winner as he crossed the finish line first in the 800 (2:11.18) and teamed wit James Bendishaw, Kyle Markwardt and Ed Olesh in the 3,200-meter relay with a time of 9:19.13.
Individually, Olesh won the 200 in 24.60.
Uniontown also won the 1,600-meter relay as the team of Mark Natural, Josh Mitchell, Festa and Markwardt crossed in 3:57.71.
Other Red Raiders came in the 100 hurdles as Albert Lee won in 15:85. John O’Neil claimed the 1,600 in 5:16.33. Aaron Oliver finished first in the 400 in 53.49 and Garrett Graham won the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.34.
Brodie Kelley ran the 3,200 in 11:42.38, Devin Miller won the triple jump with a distance of 39 feet, 8 inches. T.C. Myers cleared a height of 10 feet and Jamie Williams threw the javelin 144 feet.
Waynesburg Central 129, Brownsville 19 – The Waynesburg Central boys track & field team remains undefeated at 7-0 in Section 5-AA and 7-0 overall as they cruised to an easy win over visiting Brownsville.
The Raiders made it a clean sweep in the track events as they won all three relay events.
Joe Dulany paced Waynesburg with individual wins in the 1,600 (5:10) and the 800 (2:13).
Dominik Denicola was also a multiple winner with wins in the 110 hurdles (17.24) and the 300 hurdles (50.92).
Keith Higginbotham claimed the 100 in 11.64, while Andrew Nicholson won the 400 and Heath Jacobs won the 3200.
In the field events, Brownsville’s Joe Fieck won the long jump (20 feet, 2 inches) and the triple jump (39 feet, 0 inches).
After that, it was all Waynesburg as Jereme Yoders threw the javelin 130 feet, 10 inches, the shot put 44 feet, 1 inch and the discus 138 feet, 4 inches.
Josh Bintam cleared a height of 9 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault and Jake Raddish cleared the high jump in 5 feet, 10 inches.
Connellsville 101, Derry 49 – The Falcons had a good day Tuesday with a Section 2-AAA victory over the visiting Trojans.
Scott Jones (110 high hurdles, high jump, long jump) and Lance Straughters (100, 200) both won multiple events. Joe Villaneuva had a strong effort by finishing first in the 1,600 and running a leg on the victorious 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams.
Brad Showman won the 800 and ran the opening leg of the 3,200 relay. Rod Richter won the discus (148-1) with Aaron Meade taking first in the triple jump and joining Jones, Straughters and Aaron Hixson on the winning 400 relay team.
Connellsville (2-0, 2-2) travels to Laurel Highlands in a battle of Section 2-AAA unbeatens.
Girls track & field
Uniontown 88.5, Elizabeth-Forward 61.5 – The team of Chelsi Festa, Stacy Lloyd, Anna Girod and Kelsie Herring crossed the finish line in 10:47 for Uniontown and they never looked back as they defeated Elizabeth-Forward in Section 2-AAA action.
In the 400-meter relay, Brea Belt, Alicia Lee, Lauren Wagner and Paige Festa struck again with a 53.99 first-place finish and the team of Jessica Dzara, Girod, Herring and Chelsi Festa made a clean sweep in the relay events as they claimed the 1,600 in 4:38.20.
Individually, Herring won the 800 handily with a time of 2:41.42 and Belt went home with three victories in the 100 (13.28), the long jump (16 feet, 4 inches) and the triple jump (33 feet, 3 inches).
Katie Walt picked up two victories of her own in the 110 hurdles (16.44) and the 300 hurdles (50.85).
Dana Hyde crossed the finish line first in the 1,600 (5:53.17) and the 3,200 (13:04.19).
In the field events, Courtney Sanner threw the shot put 28 feet, 11 inches for the win and also the javelin 115 feet, 7 inches.
The Lady Red Raiders are 4-0 in the section and 5-0 overall.
Waynesburg Central 89, Brownsville 54 – America Cardine posted three running victories in the 110 hurdles (16.74), the 300 hurdles (50.90) and the 200 (28.4) as Waynesburg downed Brownsville in Section 5-AA action.
Erika Coffey also picked up three individual wins in the 1,600 (5.36), the 800 (2.36) and the 3200 (13.34).
The Lady Raiders claimed all three relay events.
On the field, Megan Bland jumped 13 feet, 10 inches to win the long jump and also cleared a height of 7 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault.
Ali Walsh tossed the shot put 28 feet, 6 inches and the discus 82 feet, 3 inches.
Lori Wise threw the javelin 93 feet, 11 inches.
Derry 78, Connellsville 72 – The Lady Trojans finished first in 10 of 18 events to edge the Lady Falcons Tuesday in Section 2-AAA action at Connellsville.
Mary Beth Giles had a nice individual effort, winning the 1,600, 3,200 and high jump in addition to running with Leah Williams, Brianna Brooks and April Shultz to a first in the 3,200 relay.
Kayla Barkley won the discus (89-2) and Heather Zelinsky took first in the javelin (94-6). Heather King outran the field to win the 300 intermediate hurdles (52.7) and the 400 relay team of Courtney McClain, Ashleigh Eutsey, Brittany Simpson and Kayla Grogan took first in 57.4 seconds.
Connellsville (0-2, 0-4) travels to Laurel Highlands Tuesday afternoon.
Boys baseball
Indiana 3, Laurel Highlands 0 – It was a rough day at the office for the Laurel Highlands boys baseball team as they lost at home to Indiana in a Section 2-AAA clash.
Winning pitcher Jake Roughaux hurled a one-hitter against the Mustangs. He went the distance fanning eight LH batters.
Jason Palermo went on record as the losing pitcher. He also went the distance, scattered four hits and struck out two.
Indiana scored its first run on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth and then picked up two more in the seventh on two LH infield errors.
Chris Miller had the big hit for LH with a line drive single in the third inning.
The Mustangs look to put one in the win column today at home against Greensburg Salem.
Penn-Trafford 5, Uniontown 2 – Ryan Robowski drilled a two-run home run in the first inning and that was all she wrote for the Uniontown boys baseball team as they lost on the road to Penn-Trafford in a Section 2-AAAA clash.
Robowski also worked the first two innings and struck out four. Corey Sawka came on in relief in the third and gave up all five runs. He struck out three and walked five and went home with the loss.
Uniontown struggled stranding nine batters on base.
“They got a big hit when they needed it,” said Uniontown coach Rob Kezmarsky.
The Red Raiders led 2-1 going into the sixth.
Ryan Kennedy doubled for the Red Radiers, who are back in action today on the road at Latrobe.
Bentworth 14, Frazier 2 – The visiting Bearcats scored in all but the third inning as they breezed past the Commodores in the Section 1-A opener for both teams. Bentworth scored three runs in the first, fifth and seventh inning , two in both the second and sixth, plus a single tally in the third inning.
Frazier (0-1, 2-3) scored single runs in the bottom of the first and third innings. Craig Rebovich led the offense with a double and single, two of the Commodores’ five hits. Tony Battaglini (1-2) pitched five innings in the loss.
Zack Anderson also pitched five innings, striking out four and walking seven in the victory. Joe Mucho had two doubles and a single while scoring two runs for the Bearcats. Ryan Anderson and Chuck Roman both added a single and double to Bentworth’s 12-hit attack.
Frazier travels to Jefferson-Morgan this afternoon for another section game.
Beth-Center 14, Burgettstown 6 – The Beth-Center bats were in full swing Thursday in Section 2-AA action as they posted 14 runs for the win over visiting Burgettstown.
Joe Tarley paced the Bulldog attack going 4-for-5 at the plate with a double.
Teammate Heath Hvizga doubled and John Lowded singled twice.
Losing pitcher Mike Siegworth homered for Burgettstown.
On the mound, Siegworth worked two innings, allowed six hits, three walks and no strikeouts.
Winning pitcher Derek Papakie (1-1) also worked two innings allowing one hit, one run and a strikeout.
The win is B-C’s first of the season as they are 1-0 in the section and 1-3 overall. They travel to Brownsville today.
Burgettstown falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the section.
Mount Pleasant 9, Brownsville 1 – Shawn Moyemont blasted a grand slam home run in the sixth inning en route to an exhibition win over Brownsville Thursday.
The Vikings led 2-1 through the first three innings, then they opened up the game with three runs in the fourth and Moyemont’s hit in the sixth.
Winning pitcher Charlie Wele (2-1) also ripped a solo shot and singled for the winners.
On the mound, Wele worked seven innings, scattered three hits and fanned eight Brownsville players and two walks.
Losing pitcher Nick Eadie went five innings, allowed five hits and two walks.
Girls softball
Waynesburg 9, Burgettstown 3 – Alyson Johnson went 4 for 5, including a three-run triple that highlight a five-run fourth inning, propelling Waynesburg Central past host Burgettstown in the Section 2-AA opener for both teams.
The score was knotted at 2-2 when Maura Lee and Erin Giachetti ignited the fourth-inning rally with back-to-back doubles to put the Lady Raiders ahead to stay. Megan Summersgill singled and Courtney Orndoff reached on an error to load the bases for Johnson, who cleared them with her key hit. Brooke Roberts followed with a run-scoring single to make it 7-2.
Orndoff allowed six hits and five walks with six strikeouts in notching the win.
Giachetti, Roberts and Summersgill each had two hits.
Losing pitcher Chrissy Koskoskie allowed all nine runs in five innings. Heather Pulver doubled for the Lady Blue Devils.
Waynesburg continues section play today when it hosts Charleroi at 4 p.m.
Frazier 9, Mapletown 4 – Frazier jumped out to an early 5-0 first-inning lead and never looked back as they defeated Mapletown in exhibition action.
“We had a slow start,” said Mapletown coach Kathy Cyr. “We can’t continue to play catch up.”
The Lady Commodores set the tone with doubles from Jessica Barcelo, Michelle Burger, Katie Oldham, Larissa Kulikoski and Kristen Joseph.
Barcelo also recorded the save.
Erika Chory had the hot bat for the Lady Maples as she homered and tripled. Her solo in-the-park home run was in the seventh inning.
Oldham worked six and two-thirds inning for the win. She struck out two and walked two.
Miranda Shipley went home with the loss in her first start. She worked four and two-thirds innings with one walk and four strikeouts.
“This was a tough one,” said Cyr. “Frazier had nice clean hits.”
Next up on the Mapletown (2-4, 0-1) schedule is a home game against Jefferson-Morgan Monday.
Connellsville 5, Beth-Center 1 -Winning pitcher Alexis Dolde hurled the one-hitter striking out six and allowing no walks in seven innings as Connellsville rolled past visiting Beth-Center Thursday in exhibition softball action.
Brooke Hoffer went 2-for-3 including a double and teammates Lindsay O’Donnell and Rachel Means each doubled.
The Lady Falcons are back in action today at home against Latrobe.
Jefferson-Morgan 11, Monessen 2 – Carly Cocciolone’s double was the lone hit the Lady Rockets’ Emily Cottle allowed as the visitors made the most of nine hits for a non-section victory.
Cocciolone broke up the no-hit attempt with a two-bagger with two outs in the sixth inning. The Lady Greyhounds scored both runs – without benefit of a hit – in the fifth inning.
Jefferson-Morgan (3-4) scored a single run in its first at-bat, then reeled off three consecutive two-run innings before closing out with a four-run sixth inning.
Ashley Phillips had a double and single while Halie Hawks and Bobbi Monack both smacked a pair of singles. Charity McCann drove in three runs.
Jefferson-Morgan opens section play Monday with a road game at Mapletown.
Shanksville 9, Turkeyfoot Valley 8 – The Turkeyfoot Valley girls softball led 8-4 through the first six innings, but Shanksville erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge past the Lady Rams in West Pac action.
Jennifer Sidone picked up the win and Nicole Beachy went home with the loss. She struck out two and walked three.
Amanda Hanft tripled for Turkeyfoot and Amanda Nickelson doubled.
Dana Birkhimer tripled for Shanksville and teammate Becky Nicholson doubled.
The Lady Rams return home today against Hyndman for a 4:15 p.m. start.
Brownsville 5, Beth-Center 1 – Emily Lucosh tripled, doubled and drove in two runs as Brownsville picked up its first victory Thursday in exhibition play.
“It’s so good to finally have some hitting come through, enough for our first win,” said Brownsville coach Jane Bock.
Winning pitcher Stacey Knox (1-3) paced the defense as she scattered five hits and fanned five Lady Trojan batters.
Liz Shaw went on record as the losing pitcher. She struck out four and allowed no walks.
Tori Bennett doubled for California and Maria Wohar singled twice.
Brownsville hosts South Fayette today.
Morgantown 4, West Greene 3; South Harrison 5, West Greene 3 – The West Greene girls softball team dropped two at the Cee-Bee Bash Tournament Thursday.
The first game ended in a heartbreaker as West Greene led 3-0 through the first six innings and Morgantown rallied for four in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Amber Walker, Megan Long and Megan Streyle fueled the Morgantown offense each with a double.
Rebecca Burns, Rachel Burns and Sarah Burns each doubled for the Lady Pioneers.
Rachel came away with the loss. She struck out three and walked two.
In the nightcap, South Harrison’s Stephanie Devericks tripled and doubled twice for the win.
Leah Fletcher fanned six West Greene batters, while Rebecca Burns went on record as the losing pitcher. She struck out five and walked three.
West Greene (3-2, 1-0) play Hundred, W.Va. today in the tournament.
Boys tennis
Connellsville 5, McKeesport 0 – The Connellsville boys tennis team improved their record to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Section 5-AAA with a shutout win at home against McKeesport.
In the No. 1 singles match, Scott Campbell made quick work of Zack Hammerston 6-1, 6-0.
Brandon Stafford downed Brad Baldwin 6-0, 6-2 in the second singles match and Blake Michaux blanked Ryan Lynch (6-0, 6-0) in No. 3 singles.
“We’ll take everything we can get at this stage in the game,” said Connellsville coach Don Campbell.
In the first doubles match, the team of Jon Ambrisco and Chris Coffman blanked Shevon Potts and Anthony Playso and the Falcons won the second doubles match by forfeit.
“It was a good match for us,” said Campbell.
Connellsville squares off at Trinity today at 3:30 p.m. in a crucial section match.
McKeesport is winless at 0-4.
Southmoreland 3, Brownsville 2 – The Southmoreland boys tennis team remains undefeated at 5-0 with a close Section 1-AA win Thursday.
In the first singles match, John Eutsey took Evan Chafin the distance, but in the end Brownsville emerged victorious with the scores 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (9-7).
Southmoreland’s Jim Donley defeated John Marcolini 7-5, 6-2 in the second singles match and Brownsville’s Colin Ryan downed Chris Brittian 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in No. 3 singles.
The Scotties swept the doubles matches for the win as the team of Chad Ozoroski and Bob Zozula slid past Christian Sally and Ronnie Jones (6-4, 7-5) and Ben Schenck and Cory Fox won handily over Adam Stimmell and Zack Manchas 6-1, 6-0.
Southmoreland and Brownsville square off today, this time at Southmoreland’s home court starting at 3:30 p.m.
Greensburg Central Catholic 4, California 1 – California’s Brett Barbero defeated Alex Spore in No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-4), but after that it was all Greensburg Central Catholic as they rolled past the Trojans in a Section 1-AA match.
College baseball
St. Vincent 9, Waynesburg 7 – St. Vincent rode a seven-run third inning to a non-conference victory over Waynesburg.
Mapletown graduate Drew Denham singled and scored ahead of Brian Gerginski’s home run during a three-run third inning to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-1 lead, but the Bearcats sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the frame as it took an 8-4 advantage.
Denham, who extended his hitting streak to six games, added an RBI single in the fourth, but Waynesburg couldn’t overcome the deficit in falling to 11-8-1.
The Yellow Jackets travel to Geneva College for a doubleheader in Beaver Falls on Monday at 1 p.m.
CCAC Boyce 6, Penn State-Fayette 1 – Jared Early tripled and drove in John Pochron for Penn State-Fayette’s lone run in the sixth inning, but it was host CCAC Boyce who emerged victorious with a 6-1 win.
Kasey Visco (2-0) worked eight innings for the win. He allowed one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts.
Ryan Caringola (1-1) pitched five innings, allowed four runs and struck out four.
Bob Madison pitched the final three innings. He allowed one earned run and struck out one.
The Roaring Lions (3-8) host Penn State-York Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hutchinson Ball Field.
