Vulcans drop out of first place
California loses pair at Shippensburg, 5-2, 7-3 The Vulcans could only muster five runs in the PSAC West twinbill at Shippensburg Friday as California dropped both ends of doubleheader, 5-2 and 7-3.
California’s seven-game winning streak comes to a close as the Vulcans fall out of first place with a conference record of 4-2 with an overall mark of 15-13. Shippensburg is tied with California in second place with a 4-2 record while improving to 19-14 overall with the sweep.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Adam Dukate pitched six innings in the first game, allowing all five runs (four earned) on seven hits. Shippensburg broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dukate struck out two and walked five.
Dave Sibenac’s solo home run accounted for one of the Vulcans’ two runs.
Ryan Bucher went 3-for-3 and Justin Garber was 2-for-2 for Shippensburg. Nathan Starner pitched six innings for the win while Kyle Warner pitched a perfect seventh inning for the save.
Drew Aniceti’s RBI single in the top of the third in the second game helped the Vulcans take a 3-2 lead, but Shippensburg put up five runs in the fifth inning on four hits, two errors, a walk and two hit-batsmen.
Corry Ryan took the loss, allowing all seven runs in less than five innings pitched. He struck out four and walked three.
Aniceti drove in two runs to lead the Vulcans. Lee Rohan tied the team record for steals in a season when the junior outfielder stole one base in each game to run his total to 27, tying Ken Wysocki’s mark set in 1981.
The Vulcans are scheduled to host Shippensburg in a doubleheader this afternoon at Falconi Field.
