Baseball Dye homers in Bison loss

Laurel Highlands graduate and Bethany College first baseman Tim Dye recorded his first collegiate home run in a loss against Muskingum. The shot was a pinch-hit, solo long ball.

Earlier in the season against the University of Redlands in another pinch-hitting role, Dye singled in his first collegiate at bat to drive in a run for the Bison.

PSU splits at home

The Penn State-Fayette men’s baseball team split a baseball doubleheader at home Sunday against Penn State-Hazelton.

The Roaring Lions dropped the first game 2-1, but rallied back in the nightcap and pulled off the 4-3 victory in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Dan Schoch ripped a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth to score Jared Early, who doubled to lead off the inning.

Teammate Phil Gratchic also doubled for the Roaring Lions.

Winning pitcher Mike Graaf (5-3) went the distance for Penn State-Hazelton. He struck out seven and allowed two walks.

Losing pitcher Matt Fanase also hurled all seven innings striking out six and walking five.

In the nightcap, catcher A.J. Ardabell singed to lead off the inning. Justin Coffman sacrificed Ardabell to second and he moved to third in a wild pitch.

Jamie Kowalczyk singled in the winning run.

Gratchic (1-1) picked up the win as he went the distance striking out three and walking five.

Bill Seeders went on record as the losing pitcher striking out two batters.

The Roaring Lions are back in action Tuesday at Penn College.

Track & field

Locals shine for Cal

California junior and Belle Vernon graduate Ryan Moravec scored in multiple events to lead the California University of Pa. track & field to fourth place in the men’s standings in the PSAC West Challenge at Adamson Stadium Saturday.

Moravec placed first in the 1,500 (4:04.20) and the 5,000 (15:30.20).

Teammate and Connellsville graduate Jon Hall also contributed in the individual sprints for the men, placing third in the 100 (10.70) and fourth in the 200 (26.30).

On the women’s side, Laurel Highlands graduate Tanisha Parker placed fourth in the200 with a time of 27.01.
