Borland, Myers lead Mustangs over Brownsville Cory Borland went 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI as Laurel Highlands edged past Brownsville, 2-1, in a boys non-section baseball contest Saturday.

Winning pitcher J.C. Myers went the distance striking out 10 Brownsville batters.

David Novotney went on record as the losing pitcher. He worked two innings, struck out three and allowed one run.

Justin Gibson and Craig Novak each doubled for the Falcons and Myers hit a two-bagger for the Mustangs.

Brownsville travels to Burgettstown Monday.

College baseball

California 9, Indiana 4; California 2, Indiana 0 – The top four hitters in California Universirty of Pa.’s lineup combined for 14 of the team’s 20 hits along with five runs scored, eight RBIs and four stolen bases Saturday, helping the Vulcans sweep a PSAC West doubleheader against Indiana, Pa., at Falconi Field.

Juniors Dustin Woodring and Lee Rohan, along with sophomores Drew Aniceti and Robert Hedrick led the way for Cal (23-13, 8-2).

The wins extended Cal’s winning streak to eight games and raised the team’s record to 23-13 overall, 8-2 and second place in the PSAC West.

In the nightcap, Cal scored a run in the first on an Aniceti RBI single, and Jefferson-Morgan graduate Adam Dukate (4-3) tossed a four-hitter with no walks and four strikeouts.

Women’s softball

California 6, Clarion 3; California 9, Clarion 1 – Senior DH Debbie Tedesco and freshman pitcher Meghan Johnson combined to rally Cal to a first-game win, then the Vulcans ran away late in the second game for a PSAC West softball doubleheader sweep at Clarion Saturday.

The Vulcans won the opener, 6-3, as Tedesco ripped a bases-loaded, two-run double in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie. It was her third hit of the game.

In the nightcap, Cal scored five runs in the top of the sixth on the way to a 9-1 triumph. It was Cal’s sixth-straight win and improved the team’s record to 14-10 overall, 6-4 and third place in the PSAC West.
