Chartiers-Houston girls squeeze out win over Carmichaels The Lady Bucs received strong pitching from Danielle Claasen and another leadoff home run from Jaci Timko Tuesday to defeat Carmichaels, 3-1, for a Section 2-A road victory.

As she did against West Greene on Monday, Timko put Chartiers-Houston (2-1, 5-1) on the board early against Cortney Newland.

The Lady Bucs scored an unearned run in the top of the third inning and Michelle Greenwalt brought home the third run with a run-scoring triple in the fourth.

Newland had the lone RBI for the Lady Mikes when she drove in Ashley Chernisky in the bottom of the sixth. Chernisky had tripled earlier in the inning.

Newland (5-3) had a strong outing with 14 strikeouts and only one walk.

Claasen struck out seven and walked two in the win. Timko added a single.

Carmichaels (1-2, 5-3) hosts West Greene today at 4 p.m.

John Marshall (W.Va.) 5, West Greene 3 – The Lady Pioneers took a break from section action and took a trip south for a non-section game.

West Greene (7-4, 3-1) scored two runs in its first at-bat, spurred by Rachel Burns’ RBI double and Allison Clark’s run-scoring single.

John Marshall (15-2) came right back in the bottom of the inning with three runs and added another on Vanessa Ilovar’s solo home run in the fourth inning. Ilovar finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Sarah Burns’ suicide squeeze shaved off a run in the fourth, but John Marshall got the run back with a solo tally in the sixth.

Stephanie Phillips went four innings for the win, striking out five and walking none. Marcy Dunn went 2-for-3 for the victors with Courtney McGilton adding a double.

Rachel Burns (2-2) went five innings in the loss, striking out two and walking none.

Jefferson-Morgan 12, Uniontown 7 – Jefferson-Morgan jumped out to an 11-1 lead after three innings and hung on to beat visiting Uniontown in a non-section slugfest.

The Lady Rockets (6-5) scored four runs in the first, six in the second and one in the third to build their big early lead.

The Lady Raiders (2-7) made it interesting with a five-run fourth to pull within 11-6, but could get no closer.

Halie Hawk was 3 for 4 and had an RBI single in each of the first two innings for J-M. Ashley Phillips had two hits and an RBI, and winning pitcher Emily Cottle and Charity McCann each added a double.

Cottle survived 10 hits and three walks, and struck out three.

Caitlin Krulock, Sandy Risha and Elyse Grogan had two hits apiece for Uniontown, and Stacey Riggar doubled. Davidine Jobs took the loss.

Both teams return to section action today as Jefferson-Morgan travels to Chartiers-Houston while Uniontown hosts Elizabeth-Forward.

Brownsville 7, California 6 – Emily Lucosh’s two-run single broke a 5-5 in the top of the ninth and Brownsville hung on for the non-section win over host California.

The Lady Trojans (1-12) scored one run and threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Eryn Thomas singled, Danielle Painter walked and Tori Bennett followed with an RBI hit to pull California within one, but winning pitcher Stacy Knox stranded the potential tying and winning runs by retiring the final two batters.

Knox allowed six hits and seven walks with nine strikeouts.

Jen Sheridan had three hits and two RBIs for Brownsville (2-4), while Bennett had the same for the Lady Trojans. Losing pitcher Liz Shaw struck out five, walked five and allowed eight hits.

Nicole Voytovich added a double for the Lady Falcons, who were playing their first game since the sudden death of senior pitcher Jeana Rouse.

Brownsville returns to Section 2-AA play today when it travels to Washington.

California travels to Monessen for a Section 1-A game on Friday.

Boys track & field

Laurel Highlands 106, Elizabeth-Forward 44 – The Mustangs pretty much had their way with the visiting Warriors to set up the Section 2-AAA season finale next Tuesday at home against rival Uniontown.

Laurel Highlands (5-1, 5-1) received strong efforts from Jeff Palya, Jack Macioce and Jared Jodon, among others. Palya won the 1,600 (4:54.3) and 800 (2:12.3) while Macioce doubled in the 100 (11.4) and 200 (23.4). Jodon topped out at 15-6 in the pole vault after just missing clearing 16 feet.

Eric Yarbrough (triple jump), Mike Iannamorelli (long jump), Ryan Thorn (3,200), Colby Springer (high jump) and Scott Diguglielmo (discus) also finished first. The Mustangs swept the relays.

Uniontown 84, Waynesburg Central 66; Uniontown 83, McGuffey 67 – The Red Raiders were tested, but returned home from McGuffey with a pair of non-section victories.

Uniontown swept the 3,200 relay from both teams. Albert Lee beat all opponents in the 110 high hurdles, as did Garrett Graham in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Mac Festa beat both teams in the 800, as did T.C. Myers in the pole vault.

Against Waynesburg, Ed Olesh (400), the 1,600 relay of Mark Natural, Festa, Josh Mitchell and Kyle Markwardt, Devin Miller (triple jump), Steven Lee (high jump) and James Williams (javelin) took firsts.

In the meet against Uniontown, Waynesburg’s Keith Higginbotham tripled out with wins in the 100, 200 and running anchor for the 400 relay. Joe Dulaney won the 1,600 against the Red Raiders, and Jake Raddish took the long jump. Jereme Yoders won two events, the discus and shot put.

Uniontown (6-1) hosts Derry in Section 2-AAA action Thursday on Senior Day beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Burrell 78½, Southmoreland 71½ – The Scotties just fell short on the road, dropping from the undefeated ranks in Section 3-AA with a loss to the Bucs. Southmoreland falls to 6-1 in the section.

Ben Poorbaugh won the shot put and discus, and the Scotties did well in the throws with a 21-6 advantage. Although Kevin Snyder won the triple jump, the Bucs picked a point in the jumps, outscoring the Scotties 18½-17½.

Southmoreland won the 3,200 relay other two relays going to Burrell for another 5-point swing.

Snyder won the 110 high hurdles and Chris Kiefer took first in the 3,200 for the lone Southmoreland wins on the track. Burrell scored 54 points on the track to Southmoreland’s 33.

Washington 144, Brownsville 6 – Rocky Rockwell’s second in the high jump was the top performance for the visiting Falcons in a Section 5-AA loss to the Prexies.

Girls track & field

Uniontown 109, Waynesburg Central 41; Uniontown 109, McGuffey 40 – The Lady Raiders didn’t have much trouble in a non-section triangular at McGuffey.

Uniontown (7-0) won all but three events against Waynesburg and four events against McGuffey.

Brea Belt had another nice performance, finishing first in the long jump, triple jump and 100 and helping the 400 relay team sweep the day. Kelsie Herring won the 1,600, 800 and shared first place in the 3,200 with teammate Michelle Naymick.

Paige Festa won both the 100 high and 300 intermediate hurdles with Candace Adams picking up first-place points in the 400 and javelin. Lauren Wagner won the high jump. Uniontown swept the relays against both teams.

Waynesburg’s Morgan Bland won the pole vault and teammate Ali Walsh won the discus.

Uniontown hosts Derry Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Laurel Highlands 101, Elizabeth-Forward 49 – Laurel Highlands girls coach Ron Morris has been stressing winning the second and third places to his squad, and the message got through for the difference in a Section 2-AAA victory.

The Lady Warriors finished first in nine events, but the Fillies overwhelmed their guests in the second- and third-place points for a strong showing.

Breehana Jacobs had another typical day for the Fillies, winning the 100 (12.1) and 200 (25.1), and anchoring the 400 relay team of Kayla Mikluscak, Aleesha Washington and Molly Macioce to a stadium record of 51.2 seconds.

Molly Macioce won the 400 and helped the 1,600 relay to a victory.

Demi Phillipy broke her freshman record in the javelin with a winning throw of 109-6½ while Casey Conn broke a longstanding record in the triple jump when she leapt 35-3½ to establish a school and stadium record. The old mark was set by Courtney Silbaugh in 1995 of 34-2. Conn also won the pole vault.

Carrie Villegas won the shot put.

Laurel Highlands (6-0) goes for the Section 2-AAA title next Tuesday when the Fillies host Uniontown. The Fillies will be in action Saturday in the West Virginia Invitational in Morgantown.

Washington 113, Brownsville 37 – America Cardine won the 100 high (16.9) and 300 intermediate (48.3) hurdles and teammate Lisa Fraley finished first in the high jump (4-10) to highlight the day for the Lady Falcons in Section 5-AA action at Washington.

Boys baseball

Waynesburg Central 5, South Fayette 2 – Troy Cree smacked a double and two singles, scored three runs and stole a pair of bases in sparking visiting Waynesburg Central to non-section win at South Fayette.

Winning pitcher Dan Cross, the second of three Raiders pitchers, allowed one run in two innings. Starter Kenny Blackwell gave up one run in three innings, and Cory Titchenell closed out the game with two scoreless frames to earn the save.

Todd Bland’s two-run single in the second put Waynesburg in front to stay. Bland added an RBI hit in the fourth to make it 4-1.

Mitch Monas also had two hits for the Raiders (4-4).

Waynesburg returns to Section 2-AA play today when it hosts Burgettstown at 4 p.m.

Beth-Center 5, Mapletown 2 – Matt Stay allowed only two runs in tossing a five-hitter as Beth-Center won for the third time in its last four games by upending visiting Mapletown in a non-section game.

Coach Frank Pryor’s Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and one in the third off losing pitcher John Grim, but coach Jay Donley’s Maples sliced the gap to one with two runs in the fourth.

Ryan Butka, who was 2 for 3, delivered a two-run single in the sixth to give Beth-Center some breathing room. That was enough for Stay, who struck out five and walked two.

Nate White was 2 for 2 with a double for the Bulldogs.

Cory Dillinger and Nick Popernac both had a double for Mapletown.

Beth-Center returns to Section 2-AA play today when it travels to Southmoreland.

Latrobe 5, Uniontown 4 – Latrobe scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to stun visiting Uniontown in a Section 2-AAAA battle.

Ryan Robowski tripled and singled, and Nick Apicella doubled and single for the tough-luck Red Raiders, who fall to 2-6-1 overall and 0-5 in the section. Steve Kezmarsky and Cory Sawka added two hits apiece.

Losing pitcher Nathan Fike allowed seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

The Wildcats (7-3, 3-2) broke a scoreless tie when Nick DeStefano hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run in the fourth.

Uniontown fought back with two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh to go up 4-2.

Latrobe’s winning rally was capped by DeStefano’s one-out RBI single.

Uniontown hosts Albert Gallatin on Friday.

Boys tennis

Trinity 4, Connellsville 1 – The Hillers swept the singles and split the doubles for a Section 5-AAA victory over visiting Connellsville. Trinity improves to 5-2 in the section while the Falcons go to 3-2 in the section and 4-5 overall.

The No. 2 doubles team of Jon Ambrisco and Chris Coffman helped the Falcons avoid a shutout with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Patsy Tranquilli and Travis Stofer.

“The doubles played well,” said Connellsville coach Don Campbell. “Trinity is a pretty solid team. We’re having some problems at singles. We need to get that together.”

Connellsville hosts Hempfield today at 3:30 p.m.

College baseball

California (Pa.) 6-7, Indiana (Pa.) 0-3 – Behind freshman Corry Ryan’s complete game shutout in the opener, the Vulcans swept a PSAC-West twinbill at Indiana Monday.

Ryan (3-2) allowed just three hits, struck out nine and walked two.

In the nightcap, John Squiglia improved to 4-0, starting and working four innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out five.

Robert Hedrick worked the final three innings to pick up his second save.

California came into the game tied for seventh place in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association regional poll, and the doubleheader sweep improved the Vulcans’ overall mark to 25-13 and PSAC-West record to 10-2.

The victory was also California’s 10th straight, and marked the third straight season the Vulcans have had a double-digit win streak.

In the opener, Hedrick and Lee Rohan each had two hits, scored a run, drove in a run and stole a base.

In the twinbill, the Vulcans stole 13 bases, which raised the team’s school single-season record total to 151.

College softball

Washington & Jefferson 8-7, Waynesburg 2-8 – Waynesburg Central graduate and Yellow Jacket freshman Autumn Minor evened her record as Waynesburg scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to salvage a doubleheader split.

Minor (5-5) scattered 13 hits through seven innings, allowing seven runs while striking out two batters. Minor helped her own cause, singling once in four at bats and driving in a pair of runs.

In the first game, Washington & Jefferson’s Amanda Howard was 4 for 4 and scored three runs as the Yellow Jackets suffered their first Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss.

The victory in the second game improved Waynesburg’s overall record to 9-11, and moved the Yellow Jackets to 3-1 in conference play.

After going 0 for 4 in the opener, Melissa Cashell had three hits, scored two runs and also drove in a run in the nightcap.

Centerfielder Courtney DeFalcon had a pair of hits in the second game and scored two runs, as did Melissa Schrecengost.

Amanda Snoke (4-4) suffered the loss in the first game, starting and lasting four innings. She allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and walked two batters.

In the opener, Washington & Jefferson’s Rebecca Nachreiner won her ninth game of the season, tossing a complete game five-hitter. She walked three and struck out four.

Nachreiner then suffered the loss in the second game, entering the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning in relief of Kelsey Donhue.

Waynesburg trailed, 4-0, 6-2 and 7-3 before rallying in the nightcap.

California (Pa.) 2-8, Indiana (Pa.) 1-0 – Senior Becky Mezyk drove home the winning run in the eighth inning of the opener, then threw a three-hit shutout in the nightcap to lead the Vulcans to the doubleheader sweep.

Mezyk’s single with one out in the eighth inning scored Megan Timpf to make a winner of Katie Francart. Francart scattered five hits and three walks while striking out four to improve to 4-6.

California (16-10, 8-4) extended its winning streak to eight games and moved into a tie with IUP for second place in the PSAC-West. Lock Haven leads the division with a 10-0 mark and travels to California Friday.

Timpf finished the day 4 for 8 with three runs scored and an RBI. Debbie Tedesco added three hits, two runs and an RBI, all of which came in the second game.

California returns to action today, hosting West Liberty in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

Women’s golf

California (Pa.) Tournament – The host team won the tournament held at Cedarbrook Golf Club, easily distancing the field with a two-day total of 697. Mercyhurst was second with 765 and Washington & Jefferson placed third with 799 strokes.

The Vulcans’ Simone DeSouza was medallist with a two-round total of 165, shooting a 79 in the second round.

Washington & Jefferson’s Amanda Leskinen, a Laurel Highlands graduate, finished with a two-round total of 220, shaving 10 strokes from her opening round on the second day.
