Trojans present Hartman with 100th coaching win Zack Janey and his California Trojan teammates handed coach Don Hartman his 100th win as head coach with a 10-0 win over Frazier Tuesday. Hartman took over as head coach in 1998.
The win lifts California to 9-4 overall and 7-1 in Section 1-A games. Janey pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out 11 and walking only one, to improve his pitching record to 7-0 on the season.
Jason Britton sparked the Trojans offense by driving in a run in a 4-for-5 day at the plate. Travis VanOlst added three hits.
Tony Battaglini absorbed the pitching loss and doubled for the Commodores.
Softball
Courtney Newland kept the game in control and appropriately ended it.
Newland’s two-run inside-the-park homer put the finishing touch on an 11-1 Carmichaels win over Avella in six innings in Section 2-A girls softball action Tuesday.
Newland also pitched a one-hitter as the Lady Mikes improved to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in section games.
Shayleigh Busti had a two-run homer in the third inning before Newland’s two-run homer in the sixth ended the game due to the 10-run rule. Busti and Morgan Pratt had three hits each, with Busti finishing 3-for-3 with three RBI.
West Greene 6, Jefferson-Morgan 0 – It took a while, but the Lady Pioneers finally got this Section 2-A win over the Lady Rockets. The game was suspended Friday with West Greene holding a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
Play resumed Tuesday and West Greene didn’t waste any time, scoring two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth in support of winning pitcher Rebecca Burns (7-2). West Greene improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in league games, while J-M fell to 7-7, 2-3.
“It was a real good performance by Rebecca, throwing a two-hitter against a team that usually hits the ball well,” West Greene coach Bill Simms said.
Rebecca and Rachel Burns had two hits each for West Greene, while Chelsey Jones was 2-for-2 with an RBI in each the fourth and fifth innings.
Bentworth 9, Frazier 2 – Alyssa Zrimsek struck out 14 batters and Melissa Rankin homered and doubled to lift Bentworth over Frazier in Section 1-A girls softball action.
Bentworth improved to 5-1 in section games, while Frazier fell to 3-3 and 6-4 overall. Losing pitcher Jessica Barcelo gave up 12 hits, but only one earned run, that coming on Rankin’s home run. The Lady Commodores committed five errors.
Greensburg Salem 14, Laurel Highlands 0 – Amanda Weightman scattered three hits and her Greensburg Salem teammates pounded out 12 hits and had a 10-run inning in this Section 2-AAA win over the Fillies.
Among Greensburg Salem’s hits were doubles by Michelle Cribbs and Andrea Thompson. Christina Cerullo had two singles for LH. Rebecca Williams suffered the pitching loss. The Lady Lions improved to 5-2 in the section. The Fillies (4-5, 4-3) host Derry today.
College baseball
Andy Rodenbaugh tripled among three hits and drove in three runs to lead Penn State Beaver to an 11-3 win over Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, in the Penn State University Athletic Conference Western Regional baseball tournament.
The loss ended Fayette’s season with a 23-20-1 record overall and a 14-7 mark in conference games. The championship tournament was shortened from a four-team double-elimination event to a one-day single-elimination format due to poor weather. It was held at Penn College.
Fayette took a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, but Beaver came right back with three in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good, 4-3. Beaver took control with a four-run fifth inning and added three more in the seventh.
Winning pitcher Kyle Weaver scattered five hits, while striking out six, walking two and hitting three batters. Losing pitcher Bob Madison worked 4.1 innings and allowed eight runs on 10 hits. Phil Gratchic doubled for Fayette.
Boys tennis
Connellsville’s Scott Campbell and Brandon Stafford came up short in the Section 5-AAA doubles tournament in boys tennis Tuesday.
The local duo fell to Trinity’s Travis Gatten and David Dornik, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5, in the third-place consolation match. Gatten and Dornik advance to the WPIAL doubles tournament.
