MLB: Barnes, Hawpe lead Rockies past Phillies
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Clint Barmes homered and drove in two runs and Brad Hawpe added two RBIs to lead Colorado to a 7-6 victory over Philadelphia on Tuesday night. The Rockies nearly wasted a six-run lead, but held on for their sixth victory in eight road games.
Sal Fasano had two RBI doubles for the Phillies, who dropped to 4-9 at home.
Reds 6, Nationals 5
WASHINGTON – Edwin Encarnacion drove in four runs, and Cincinnati took advantage of Washington starter Billy Traber’s wildness to win their sixth of seven and improve to 14-7, their first time at seven games over .500 since July 4, 2004.
Washington dropped to 1-6 at home. Traber (1-1) lasted only 1 1-3 innings, and the Nationals had to use five relievers.
Brewers 4, Braves 2
MILWAUKEE – Prince Fielder singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning to lift Milwaukee.
Gabe Gross doubled with one out in the sixth off Tim Hudson (1-2) and advanced to third on a groundout. Carlos Lee singled sharply to center field, scoring Gross to tie the game. Lee stole second with Fielder batting.
Cubs 3, Marlins 1
CHICAGO – Dontrelle Willis lost for the first time in April, with rookie Sean Marshall pitching seven scoreless innings on a cold night to lead Chicago.
Willis (1-1) allowed three runs, five hits and three walks in seven innings, striking out six. He had been 9-0 with a 2.20 ERA in 14 April starts. Willis also began the night 2-0 with a 1.01 ERA in four starts at Wrigley Field.
Yankees 9, Devil Rays 9
NEW YORK – Derek Jeter homered and drove in three runs, Mike Mussina had another strong outing and the New York Yankees got off to a much better start against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays this season.
Jason Giambi also knocked in three runs to give him eight RBIs in two games. Jeter finished with three hits and scored three runs. He has 16 hits in his last 30 at-bats.
Red Sox 8, Indians 6
CLEVELAND – Manny Ramirez followed an intentional walk to David Ortiz with a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the eighth inning for Boston.
The score was 5-5 when Kevin Youkilis singled off Guillermo Mota (0-1) with one out in the eighth and stole second. Mark Loretta popped out and Cleveland decided to walk Ortiz, who hit his ninth homer of the year an inning earlier.
Blue Jays 7, Orioles 3
TORONTO – Vernon Wells doubled home the go-ahead run in four-run seventh inning, backing Gustavo Chacin for the Blue Jays.
Chacin (4-0) allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings. He lowered his ERA from 5.60 to 5.11. Rodrigo Lopez (1-2) was the loser.
Miguel Tejada and Jay Gibbons homered for Baltimore.
