Buckley sacrifice gives LH girls win over Derry Derry and Laurel Highlands softball teams were deadlocked at 3-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning when the Fillies’ Kirsty Buckley stepped to the plate and sacrificed in Ashley Haragos for the 4-3 Section 2-AAA win Wednesday.

The Fillies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead through three innings, but Derry edged its way back into the game with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth, behind Jocelyn Pynes’ three singles.

In the bottom of the seventh, Haragos singled and advanced one of Megan Wyda’s three hits.

Christina Cerullo loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice, then Buckley drove in the game winner.

Winning pitcher Stephanie Martin (1-0) picked up her first win with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Pynes went on record as the losing pitcher. She allowed no walks and struck out two.

The Fillies (5-5, 5-3) look to put another one in the win column today at home against Connellsville.

Belle Vernon 5, Uniontown 1 – Ashley Merella limited Uniontown to just three hits and fanned 12 batters as Belle Vernon cruised to an easy win over the Lady Red Raiders.

Merella went the distance and allowed just one run and one walk.

The Lady Leopards picked up two runs in the first inning and never looked back, highlighted by Megan Chadwell’s and Heather Sellew’s single.

Merella, Ashley Dawson and Sarah Jolley each drove in a run.

Losing pitcher Davidiene Jobes went six innings with one strikeout, two hits and 10 walks.

Belle Vernon (10-3, 5-1) travel to Thomas Jefferson today in section action and Uniontown falls to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in the section.

West Greene 6, Mapletown 1 – Stacy Wickham went 2-for-3 with two singles, a run scored and an RBI en route to an easy Section 2-A victory over Mapletown at Waynesburg College field.

Teammate Sarah Veltre tripled for the Lady Pioneers.

Rebecca Burns continues her domination from the mound with her eighth win. She struck out four and walked two.

After a slow start, West Greene sealed the deal with a five-run third inning.

Jessica Ocker had the hot bat for the Lady Maples. She went 2-for-3 including a double.

Losing pitcher Ashley Chory also had four strikeouts and two walks.

West Greene (11-4, 6-1) look to add another one in the win column at Avella Monday.

Beth-Center 6, Geibel Catholic 0 – Geri Whitman fanned 12 batters and held Geibel Catholic to two hits en route to the shutout victory in Section 1-A action.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out early with three runs in the leadoff inning and two in the third, behind Courtney Kurowski’s two doubles and three RBIs. She went 3-for-4.

Tonya Carroll was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and Amanda Bolin went 2-for-4 with two singles.

Kati Betler went on record as the losing pitcher. She struck out two and allowed no walks.

Beth-Center (7-4, 6-0) plays Monessen at home Friday.

Waynesburg Central 8, Burgettstown 4 – Nikki Coleman doubled twice, singled, drove in three runs and scored a run as Waynesburg Central rolled past Burgettstown in Section 2-AA action.

Winning pitcher Courtney Orndoff (10-1) picked up another victory with four strikeouts and one walk.

Losing pitcher Chris Koskoskie went six innings and walked four.

The Lady Raiders travel to Charleroi Friday.

Baseball

Waynesburg Central 13, Beth-Center 1 – J.D. Higgins had a banner day at the plate for Waynesburg with two home runs (three-run shots in the first and third innings), six RBIs and three runs scored, as Waynesburg upended Beth-Center in Section 2-AA action.

Higgins had help at the plate as Dan Cross went 3-for-4 with three singles and an RBI, while winning pitcher Troy Cree doubled twice.

Brandon Rumbaugh doubled and singled twice with three runs scored.

In all, the Raiders posted 15 hits and took care of B-C in five innings.

Cree went the distance on the mound with five strikeouts and four hits.

Matt Stotka went home with the loss. He worked the first one and one-third innings with six hits, six runs and no strikeouts.

Waynesburg Central (5-1, 7-4) hosts Charleroi today.

California 7, Jefferson-Morgan 5 – Jason Britton went 3-for-3 with three singles and Ben Carson added two singles as California extended its section 1-A record to 8-1 with a win over Jefferson-Morgan.

Winning pitcher Travis VanOlst went six innings with seven strikeouts, seven hits, five walks and five runs.

Mike Mox turned in the loss. He also worked six innings and gave up nine hits, seven runs (five earned) and three strikeouts.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Josh Lawrence had the lone extra-base hit with a double.

Mox singled twice while Don Montibeller singled twice, had an RBI and a stolen base.

The Trojans (8-1, 11-4) play Carmichaels at home Monday at 4:15 p.m.

Boys tennis

Connellsville 3, Ringgold 2; Connellsville 4, Ringgold 1 – The Connellsville boys tennis team swept Ringgold Wednesday in two Section 5-AAA matches.

In the first match, Connellsville edged past Ringgold 3-2 and they cruised to an easy win in the second match, 4-1.

Jordan Kurth defeated Scott Campbell in No. 1 singles with the scores of 7-6, 9-7 in the tiebreaker and 6-0.

Brandon Stafford put the Falcons on the scoreboard in the second singles match with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Zack Smith.

Ringgold’s Tom Hric defeated Blake Michaux 6-1, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.

The Falcons swept the doubles matches as the team of Dave Witt and Storm Grimm made quick work of Stace Hummel and Breanne Panserri (6-1, 6-2) and Jon Ambrisco and Joe DeBerry defeated Emily Cornelius and Katie Johnson 6-0, 6-2.

In the second match, Campbell defeated Hric 6-2, 6-3 in No. 1 singles and Grimm outlasted Witt 6-3, 7-6 and 7-5 in the tiebreaker in the second singles match.

Witt made it a clean sweep in No. 3 singles over Cornelius (6-0, 6-0).

Ringgold took the first doubles match as the team of Smith and Kurth defeated Stafford and Michaux (6-3, 7-5), but Connellsville rallied in No. 2 doubles as Ambrisco and Chris Coffman defeated Marra Rodgers and Megan Hissick 6-1, 6-2.

The Falcons are 7-6 overall and 6-3 in the section and Ringgold falls to 4-5.

Boys track

Laurel Highlands 80, Uniontown 70 – Laurel Highlands is in, and Uniontown is out of the playoffs.

Jared Jodon tied the Laurel Highlands’ school record and the stadium record with a height of 16 feet in the pole vault, as Laurel Highlands earned a playoff spot in Section 2-AAA boys track & field.

The Red Raiders miss the chance at the playoffs with the loss.

The pole vault was the lone event that was not completed Tuesday due to weather and turned out to be the deciding event.
