Uniontown’s Knapp bows out of bass tournament, still earns $15,000

By The 2 min read

Uniontown professional bass angler Jason Knapp lost in the first round, Thursday of the FLW Tour Championship at Logan Martin Lake in Alabama. Under a unique head-to-head format, two anglers lock horns in the first two days with the one catching the heaviest two-day total advancing to another head-to-head round today. The final 12 fishermen will then battle in an open championship round for the top $500,000 prize on Saturday.

Knapp, seeded 25th in the field of 48, lost narrowly to Danny Correia, of Marlborough, Mass., who was seeded 24th.

For the first two days of the tournament, Knapp caught eight fish, weighing 16 pounds and nine ounces. Correia reeled in 10 fish, weighing 17 pounds and nine ounces.

Knapp had led after the first day Wednesday, catching five fish, weighing 11 pounds and two ounces. Correia caught five fish Wednesday, weighing 10 pounds and five ounces. He caught five fish Thursday, weighing seven pounds and four ounces while Knapp caught three fish, weighing five pounds and seven ounces.

Correia will now battle Anthony Gagliardi, the No. 1 seed in the tournament and the leader after the first two days. Gagliardi, of Prosperity, S.C., caught 10 pounds, weighing 28 pounds and nine ounces in his first two days, beating Ishama Monroe, who caught seven fish, weighing eight pounds and 11 ounces. Monroe had been seeded 48th.

Knapp, the son of Ron and Patty Knapp of Uniontown, took home $15,000 just for qualifying for the tournament. Knapp, who turned professional this year, has two tournament wins and eight top-10 finishes in his career. His highest finish on the FLW Tour this year was 18th place at Lake Okeechobee in the tour’s season opener last January. He earned $11,000 for that finish.
