Federer’s North American Streak ended at 55 MASON, Ohio (AP) – Roger Federer’s 55-match winning streak in North America came to a stunning end Wednesday when the world’s top player was upset by Britain’s Andy Murray in the second round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters.

Murray kept his composure while Federer lost .

When Federer’s return sailed long to finish off the 7-5, 6-4 win, Murray calmly removed the sweatband from his head and went to the net to shake Federer’s hand.

“I don’t know what to say,” Murray said. “I didn’t know how to react at the end because I definitely was not planning on winning the match.”

He had plenty of help from Federer, who hadn’t lost on the continent since Dominik Hrbaty beat him in the first round at the Cincinnati Masters on Aug. 3, 2004. He hadn’t taken a straight-set loss in his last 194 matches.

Murray became only the second player to beat Federer this year, joining No. 2 Rafael Nadal.

Federer had won his previous 19 matches, and was 85-2 on hard courts over the last two years heading into the match.

Mayweather to fight Baldomir in November

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Floyd Mayweather Jr., generally considered the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer, will fight Carlos Baldomir for the WBC welterweight title Nov. 4 in Las Vegas.

Mayweather (36-0, 24 KOs) chose his next opponent last weekend after months of campaigning for a matchup with Oscar De La Hoya, who still hasn’t decided whether he will retire. Mayweather won the IBF welterweight belt in his last fight with a unanimous decision over Zab Judah in April, but relinquished that title.

“This bout represents the linear world welterweight champion in Baldomir going against the pound-for-pound best in Mayweather,” promoter Dan Goossen said.

Cory Spinks and Kostya Tszyu also were candidates to be Mayweather’s next opponent, but Baldomir should generate much more excitement among fight fans.

Baldomir (43-9-6, 13 KOs) hasn’t lost a fight in nearly 10 years, mostly recently stopping Arturo Gatti in the ninth round on July 22. The 35-year-old Argentine was hungry to fight Mayweather for the biggest purse of his career, calling out Mayweather moments after beating Gatti.

Baldomir also upset Judah earlier in the year, winning the WBC title but failing to claim the IBF and WBA titles because he didn’t want to pay their sanctioning fees from his meager $100,000 purse.

The fight will be held at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on a pay-per-view broadcast by HBO.
