Bobish ties career-low score as Uniontown beats Ringgold
By the Herald-Standard David Bobish tied his career-best round with a 1-under-par 34 as Uniontown rolled past visiting Ringgold, 197-24,5 in Division I, Section 2 boys golf action Thursday at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
Bobish double-bogeyed the last hole or else he would shot a personal-best 32.
“My hats off to my players,” said Uniontown coach Aaron Scott. “They’re off to a great start.”
Teammate Seth Rockwell finished second in the scoring with a 38 followed by Josh Miller’s 40. Rounding out the scoring for Uniontown was Allen Ziegler (42), Cory Over (43) and Mike Rogers (44).
Chris Fibbi fired the low round of 40 for Ringgold.
Uniontown (2-0) plays Monday against Brownsville at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Laurel Highlands 197, Belle Vernon 213 – Greg Fike recorded a medallist round of 38 en route to an easy Division I, Section 2 victory over host Belle Vernon.
Teammate Matt McCabe finished one stroke off his pace, while Fred David, Josh John and Maria Battaglia all carded 40s.
Brian Luzanski paced the Leopards with a 40 followed by Tyler Luftig’s 41. Kyle Naden (42), Nolan Russell (45) and Dave Johnson (45) rounded out the scoring for Belle Vernon.
Laurel Highlands takes on Albert Gallatin Tuesday at Duck Hollow.
Albert Gallatin 203, Southmoreland 217 – Jake Magerko took home medallist honors with a 39 as Albert Gallatin downed visiting Southmoreland by 14 strokes in Division I, Section 2 action.
Teammates Brett DiDominic, Tom Corazzi and Nick Samples fired 40s and Carl Weber added a 44.
Nathan Hoburn turned in Southmoreland’s low score with a 40, while Jared Watkiss was one stroke off the pace. Other Southmoreland golfers included Jeff Crane (43), Taylor Campbell (44) and Mike Cross’ 49.
Mount Pleasant 200, Connellsville 216 – Josh Coccogna fired a one-under 33 on the front nine at Pleasant Valley Country Club as Mount Pleasant defeated Connellsville in Division I, Section 2 play.
Connellsville’s Jonathan Luczka turned in the next lowest round with a 37 with Mount Pleasant’s Anthony Prailey rounded out the top three golfers with a 41.
Other Viking golfers included Jordan Jones (42), Mike Bando (42), John Hostoffer (42) and Alex Urban (43).
Connellsville’s Cody Boors (42), Tyler Nicholson (42), Devin Keno (46) and Braedon Foreman (49) also counted in the Falcons’ final score.
The Falcons (1-1, 1-1) host Belle Vernon at 3:30 p.m., while Mount Pleasant (2-0, 2-0) hosts Uniontown. Both matches are Tuesday.
Mapletown 184, Carmichaels 212 – Ethan Kovach carded an even-par 33 to lift the Maples to their first victory of the season, defeating Carmichaels in Division II, Section 8 action.
The Maples rounded out the top three scores with Don Hilenbrant’s 35 and Joel Kovach’s 36. Ryan Wilson (39), Charlie Grim (41) and Kelly Rice (42) rounded out the scoring.
Jeff McWilliams shot a 39 for the low Carmichaels’ score. Teammates Zach Wolfe (40), Dan Lasko (43), Ian McCombs (44), Tim Voithofer (46) and Travis Proden (46) all turned in scores for the Mikes.
Mapletown (1-1, 1-2) is back in action at Rohanna’s Monday against Chartiers-Houston starting at 3:30 p.m. Carmichaels is now 0-1 in both the section and overall.
Waynesburg Central 235, Beth-Center 258 – Zach Schloemer went home with medallist honors with a low round 39 as Waynesburg Central downed Beth-Center Thursday in Division II, Section 8 play.
Rachel Rohanna was next in the scoring column with a 41 on the front nine at Nemacolin Country Club and Beth-Center’s Zac Nicola came in third with a 42.
Waynesburg’s Matt Fox turned in a sub-50 round of 47, as did Beth-Center’s Brant Looman.
The Raiders play Tuesday against California at Carmichaels G.C. at 3 p.m.
Geibel Catholic 207, Bentworth 218 – Erio Vignali shot a two-over-par 38 as Geibel Catholic won by 11 strokes over the Bearcats on the front nine at Foxwood Acres.
Geibel’s Ed Spotts and Bentworth’s Zach Marshalek finished in second place with 41s, with a three-way tie for third place with the Gators’ Steve Andursky and Mike Laick as well as Bentworth’s Derek Jansante each shooting 42s.
Other Gator golfers included Eric Ghinassi (44) and Cory Compliment (47). Geibel (2-0, 2-0) hosts Monessen Tuesday.
Bentworth’s Ty Bell (43), Clay Roman (45), Chase Roman (47) and Marko Kochis (53) also turned in cards.
Jefferson-Morgan 200, Brownsville 219 – Matt Kokoska carded a 1-under 36 en route to an easy Division II, Section 2 win over Brownsville.
Brownsville’s Ron Jones equaled Kokoska’s performance with his own 36 on the front nine at Carmichaels G.C.
Jefferson’s Justin Hughes and Dylan Blosser finished tied for second place with 40s.
Rounding out the top three finishes were 42s by J-M’s Josh Kokoska and Brian Scritchfield, as well as Brownsville’s Mike Peton.
Jefferson (2-0, 2-0) looks to make it three straight at Greene County Country Club today against Monessen starting at 9 a.m.
Frazier 206, Jeannette 271 – Marcus Wingrove shot a 39 as Frazier upended Jeannette in Division II, Section 2 action.
Teammate Brian Null fired a 41 and Dustin Lerda rounded out the top three golfers with a 42.
The Commodores host Jefferson-Morgan Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Women’s soccer
California University of Pa. 1, Geneva 0 – California freshman Amanda Heister scored the game-winning goal in her first collegiate game as the Vulcans opened the season with a 1-0 non-league women’s soccer victory at Geneva College.
Freshman Ashley Mohney, also in her first collegiate start, had the assist on the play that snapped a scoreless tie with just six minutes remaining in the match.
Men’s soccer
Alderson-Broaddus (W.Va.) 1, California University of Pa. 0 – Alderson-Broaddus freshman Mike Wilson scored the only goal of the match in the 79th minute to lift the Battlers to a 1-0 non-league soccer victory.
The Vulcans return to action Saturday with their first PSAC match of the season at Bloomsburg.
