Lady Vulcans win two-day tournament The California University of Pennsylvania women’s volleyball team defeated West Virginia State (3-2) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (3-0) to finish the two-day competition in the Ferris State Tournament undefeated Saturday.

For the second time in two days, Cal had to rally twice to pull out a five-set victory in the first match of the day.

The Vulcans lost the first and third games, but downed West Virginia State 31-33, 30-27, 26-30, 30-24, 15-12.

In the final match, Cal posted a 30-23, 30-17, 30-21 triumph over Texas A&M-Kingsville to go 4-0 in the opening weekend tournament.

Senior Amanda Evans led the way at the net with five solo blocks and 11 block assists.

Teammates Allison Liptak, Jefferson-Morgan grad Shanna Yourchik and sophomore Tamara Hinic all chipped in seven blocks.

The Vulcans have the week to prepare for another two-day tournament at Findlay (Ohio).

Men’s soccer

California University of Pa. 2, Bloomsburg 1 – Junior Sheldon Graham and freshman Felipe Souza scored the goals, but seniors Emedin Sabic and Alan Alcalde provided the keys to California University of Pennsylvania’s come-from-behind men’s soccer victory at Bloomsburg Saturday.

Sabic assisted on both second-half goals for the Vulcans, who trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Cal, two-time defending PSAC regular-season champion, return to action Wednesday with a league match at Kutztown. It is the second of four straight road games in eight days for the Vulcans.

Women’s soccer

Edinboro 4, California University of Pa. 2 – California University of Pennsylvania freshman Amanda Heister scored a pair of second-half goals, but it wasn’t enough to erase a 3-0 halftime deficit and the Vulcans dropped a PSAC West women’s soccer match at Edinboro Saturday.

Heister, who scored the only goal of the match in the final five minutes of Thursday’s non-league victory at Geneva, got Cal (1-1, 1-0 PSAC West) on the board in the 52nd minute off a throw-in assist from junior Lindsay Deaner.

Heister finished the scoring in the final seconds of the match off an assist from sophomore Katie Yohe.

The Vulcans return to action Wednesday with a non-conference match at West Virginia Wesleyan.

Boys golf

Jefferson-Morgan 202, Monessen 267 – Matt Kokoska and Zack Basinger fired a pair of 38s for medallist honors as Jefferson-Morgan upended Monessen in non-section golf action Friday at Greene County C.C.

Teammates Josh Kokoska (40), Dylan Blosser (42) and Justin Hughes rounded out the Rocket scoring.

Roger Brandemarte carded the low round of 43 for the Greyhounds.
