Ochoa just misses course record with 64
DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) – Lorena Ochoa let her mother sleep in, then went out and wrapped up an 8-under 64 as a birthday present. Ochoa came within a shot of matching the course record on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Wendy’s Championship for Children.
“Today is my mom’s birthday and I was just joking around with Dave (Brooker), my caddie, saying, ‘I’m going to shoot 10-under for my mom,”‘ Ochoa said. “We tried really hard and we came close.”
The 24-year-old waited to call her mother, Marcela, back home in Guadalajara, Mexico, because of the time difference.
“She likes to sleep in,” Ochoa said with a laugh. “I’ll call her when I’m finished. Hopefully she watched the tournament on TV and enjoyed her day.”
Ochoa is trying to win for the third time this year. She also has five seconds, a third, two fourths and a fifth-place finish in 17 starts.
She stands at 17-under 199 heading into the final round, which will start early to avoid a predicted thunderstorm on Sunday afternoon.
Jee Young Lee shot a 68 and was at 201, with Stacy Prammanasudh and Ai Miyazato another two shots back. Prammanasudh shot a 67 and Miyazato – whose brother, Yusaku Miyazato, became the first PGA Tour player to ace two holes in the same round on Friday at the Reno-Tahoe Open – carded a 67.
