DiDominic, Samples spark AG golfers Brett DiDominic and Nick Samples both shot 38 to help Albert Gallatin defeat host Laurel Highlands, 197-204, in Division I, Section 2 high school golf action on Tuesday at Duck Hollow Golf Club.

The Mustangs’ Fred David also shot 38 to create a three-way tie for medallist honors, but the Colonials’ lineup proved stronger overall as AG improved to 3-0 overall and in the section.

“It was a pretty close match,” LH coach Mike Smith said. “We didn’t have our best day, 204 isn’t the best we can shoot. But then I really didn’t think AG would shoot 197. They played steady and they played well today. They surprised me.”

Tom Corazzi and Carl Weber both shot 40 for the Colonials and Jake Magerko was right behind with a 41.

Josh John followed David for the Mustangs (2-2, 1-2) with a 39. Matt McCabe carded a 41, Maria Battaglia was next with a 42 and Greg Fike and Ben Thorn both shot 44, with one of those being the throw-out score.

“We play at Mount Pleasant on Thursday (3 p.m. at Norvelt Golf Club) and with two losses already, we have no more room for error,” Smith said.

Albert Gallatin also continues section play on Thursday with a 3 p.m. match against Belle Vernon at Willowbrook Golf Course.

Waynesburg Central 202, California 243 – Zach Schloemer shot a 2-under-par 35 to help lead the Raiders past the Trojans in Division II, Section 8 action at Carmichaels Golf Club.

Schloemer was medallist among 12 golfers, as Waynesburg Central improved to 3-1 overall and remained unbeaten (3-0) in section play.

Defending PIAA champion Rachel Rohanna fired a solid 1-over-par 38, while Matt Fox (41), Joe Moore (42) and Taylor Moore (46) rounded out the Raiders’ scoring.

“I thought Zach and Rachel came in and played two solid rounds for us,” said Waynesburg coach John Garber. “I also thought Matt Fox, with a 41, played a pretty good nine holes.

“And it’s good to get off to a good start in the section.”

Dave Beck paced California (0-3, 0-3) with a 2-over-par 39. Philip Langely added a 46, followed by Travis Van Olst (52), Derek Wible (52) and Dominic Roach (54).

“The kids played solid, but had some problems,” J-M coach John Curtis said. “They didn’t really play up to their potential. My young guy, Josh Kososka, came through with a nice round. Matt started out 4-over through two holes. But the kids are learning and being successful, which is great.”

Grant Looman topped the Bulldogs (1-3, 1-2) in scoring with a 42. Zac Nicola and Teddy Yanak followed with 45 and 48, respectively.

Jefferson-Morgan takes on Frazier at Linden Hall in a non-section 3 p.m. match on Wednesday.

The players he used were more than capable, however, as Geibel Catholic rolled to an easily Division II, Section 2 victory to remain perfect on the season.

Corey Compliment and Eric Ghinassi both fired a 41 to lead the way for the Gators (3-0, 3-0). Mike Laick carded a 41, and Matt Kraus and Steve Andursky each shot 43.

“Some of these guys aren’t regular starters, and they just played awesome,” Hoffman said. “I had faith in them.”

Connellsville 205, Belle Vernon 214 – Belle Vernon’s Tyler Lustig shot the best score of the day with a 38, but it wasn’t enough as host Connellsville, led by Jonathan Luczka’s 39, beat the visiting Leopards in a Division I, Section 2 match at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
