Connellsville girls roll past Brashear Connellsville outscored Brashear with 25 points in the second quarter, crusing to a 62-23 victory Saturday in the second day of games in the Fayette County Tip-Off Shoot-Out.
The Lady Falcons (1-1) opened a 12-2 lead after the first quarter and led 37-11 at the half. Connellsville had the better of the play in the second half with a 25-12 advantage.
Connellsville’s Elise Michaux led all scorers with 19 points. Monica Faris was also in double figures with 10.
Allisa Schrener scored nine points for Brashear.
Uniontown 47, Laurel Highlands 32 – The Lady Raiders built 26-9 halftime lead and maintained their advantage through the second half for a victory in the Fayette County Tip-Off Shoot-Out at Laurel Highlands.
Cherese Hodge and Lawren Davis shared scoring honors for Uniontown with 10 points apiece.
Jackie Gaddis was the lone Filly in double figures with 10 points.
Greensburg Salem 74, Albert Gallatin 34 – The Lady Lions scored all the points they would need in the first half, sprinting out to a 41-22 halftime lead.
Greensburg Salem continued to dominate in the second half with a 33-12 scoring advantage.
The Lady Lions’ Rachel Roddy led all scorers with 21 points. Anne Marie Olesky was also in double figures with 19 points, as was Mary Cook with 14.
Marquis Demniak led Albert Gallatin (0-2) with 12 points on four 3-pointers.
Sto-Rox 53, Brownsville 14 – Jess Buranousky scored 13 and Kerry Connolly added 10 to lead the Lady Vikings to a win over the host Lady Falcons in the FalconFest Tip-Off Tournament. Connolly was named as the tournament MVP while Daryl Ford, who scored four points, was named to the all-tournament team.
Cathy Onesko scored eight points for Brownsville, joining Nicole Kerestine on the all-tournament team.
Brownsville (1-1) travels to Uniontown Thursday for a non-section contest.
Carmichaels 54, California 24 – Megan Stuvek was a handful for the Lady Trojans, outscoring them by herself with 32 points. The senior center had a triple-double with 15 rebounds and 10 steals to earn a spot on the Charleroi Tip-Off Tournament all-tournament team.
Rose Hiles was named to the all-tournament team for California.
Carmichaels (1-1) hosts Bentworth Monday in a non-section game.
Jefferson-Morgan 44, Waynesburg Central 27 – The Lady Raiders made move in the second quarter, but the Lady Rockets responded with a 25-6 run in the third quarter to gain control of the game for a victory in the consolation game of the Fort Cherry Tip-Off Tournament.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Lindsay Olson scored 16 points, earning a spot on the all-tournament team.
Miatta Toothman scored eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Raiders, and was named to the all-tournament team.
Jefferson-Morgan improves to 1-1 overall while the Lady Raiders fall to 0-2.
North Hills 54, Geibel Catholic 43 – North Hills turned a seven-point deficit into a five-point lead with a big second period and went on to defeat Geibel Catholic in the consolation game of the Seton-LaSalle Tournament.
Natalie Hozak led the Lady Gators (0-2) with a pair of 3-pointers and 13 points, including eight in the opening quarter when Geibel Catholic took a 13-6 advantage.
The Lady Indians (1-1) rallied in the second period, out-scoring the Lady Gators 16-4 to take a 22-17 halftime lead.
North Hills led 36-31 after three periods.
Bethany Alabek and Gabby Marshall led the Lady Indians with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Mia White totaled 12 points and four assists for Geibel Catholic. Sarah Erdely contributed seven points, including a 3-pointer, and four assists, and Sabrina Szabo chipped in with six points and eight rebounds. Julianne Speeney added five points by hitting five of seven free throws.
The Lady Gators are in action again Monday when they travel to Jeannette.
Boys basketball
Geibel Catholic 62, Waynesburg Central 38 – The Gators broke open a close game with a 10-2 run to start the third quarter and never looked back against the inexperienced Raiders in the FalconFest Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.
Geibel Catholic (1-1) got 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots from senior Rob Orange, who was named to the All-Tournament team. Josh Herman added 12 points, while Tyler Erdely and Ryan Craft added 10 apiece.
Waynesburg Central (0-2) got 10 points from Dominic Denicola, who spent much of the second and third quarters on the bench with foul trouble. Sean Fancher was named to the All-Tournament team from Waynesburg Central.
Denicola scored all 10 of his points I – the first half, which ended with the Gators holding a 28-24 lead. But the Gators extended it to 38-26 and led, 44-30, after three quarters.
Bentworth 65, Jefferson-Morgan 58 – Justin Falcon’s second 3-pointer of the game forced overtime at the buzzer, but foul trouble caught up to the Rockets in the extra period as the Bearcats made the most of the overtime for a win in the consolation game of the Chartiers-Houston Tip-Off Tournament.
Jefferson-Morgan (0-2) outscored Bentworth in the fourth quarter, 23-15, to force overtime. The Bearcats won the overtime, 16-9. Three Jefferson-Morgan starters fouled out.
Ben Humble scored 17 points and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Mike Mox had 12 and Travis Watson added 10 for the Rockets.
Jon Kennedy led Bentworth (1-1) with 17 points. Joe Kennedy scored 15, Derek Jansante had 13 and Doc Harris added 11 for the Bearcats.
The Rockets opened the tournament Friday with a 63-43 loss to Chartiers-Houston. Mox scored 16 and Humble had 15.
Jefferson-Morgan hosts Fort Cherry Tuesday night.
Boys wrestling
Connellsville 42, Canon-McMillan 20 – Connellsville won seven of 12 matches that were wrestled in rolling past visiting Canon-McMillan in a match-up between two of the WPIAL’s best Class AAA squads on Friday night.
The Falcons took advantage of two forfeit victories and got pins by Jake Swink at 119, Andrew Snyder at 145 and Slade Harvey at 152. Winning by decision for Connellsville were Rain Garletts at 130, Jared Dolde at 140, Zack Benzio at 189 and Matt Zavada at 215.
Dolde broke a 3-3 tie with a tight 9-8 victory over Colin Ryan to put the Falcons ahead to stay. They led 36-10 at one point.
The Big Macs’ top two returning wrestlers, Matt Ryan and Colin Johnwon, both won by major decision. Ryan, a state finalist last year, beat Lee Newcomer 10-0 at 160, and defending state champion Johnston topped Ethan Saylor 13-5 at 125.
Men’s basketball
California (Pa.) 69, Cheyney 61 – Ron Banks had team-highs of 18 points and seven rebounds at the Vulcans held off Cheyney for a road victory in a PSAC crossover game.
California (4-0) led 30-24 at the half, but the Wolves rallied in the second half for their only lead of the game at 43-41. The Vulcans responded with a 10-point run as Connellsville’s James Hairston netted a pair of free throws with 5:54 remaining for a 51-43 lead.
John Owens scored 14 with four assists, four rebounds and two steals for the Vulcans. Osborne Gardner added 13.
Michael Fryer led Cheyney (0-4) with 20 points, while Ed Braswell added 15.
Women’s basketball
California (Pa.) 71, Cheyney 48 – The Vulcans put distance between themselves and the Wolves early in the game, and cruised to a PSAC crossover road victory.
Lindsay Johnson scored a game-high 22 points for California, who improved to 5-2 overall. Kim Nowakowski had her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
