Red Raiders hold on for home victory Uniontown’s James Pratt made a pair of free throws with 8.5 seconds remaining to secure an 82-79 non-section victory Wednesday for the Red Raiders over visiting Westinghouse.

Uniontown tied the game at 35 at halftime, and then moved ahead 61-52 in the third quarter. Westinghouse rallied back to tie the game with 17 seconds remaining, but the Red Raiders’ Josh Thomas made the second of two free throws for an 81-79 lead.

Uniontown regained possession of the ball and Pratt was sent to the line for the two clinching foul shots. Westinghouse’s Ajani Oganna had a chance to tie the game, but his 3-point shot fell short.

Doogie Sanner led Uniontown (2-2, 1-0) with 23 points. The Red Raiders had three other players in double figures with Thomas finishing with 15, Pratt tallying 14 and Ryan Turner adding 11.

Oganna led all scorers with 33 points, including five 3-point goals. Michael Mollett was also in double digits for Westinghouse (0-4) with 15.

Brownsville 79, Geibel Catholic 68 – Terrance McCoy turned in a dazzling performance, topping all players with 29 points, as the Falcons topped the host Gators in non-section action.

Trailing 56-53 entering the final quarter, Brownsville (2-2) outscored Geibel, 26-12, over the final eight minutes.

Andrew Roberts added 16 points for the winners, while Darnel Brown chipped in 11, including three treys.

For Geibel, Josh Herman nearly matched McCoy, settling for 27 points. Mark Gira added 13 points, with Robert Orange finishing with 12.

Orange pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, while Gira dished out six assists and Tyler Erdely recorded four steals.

Geibel (1-2) led 21-13 after one quarter, and 38-32 at the half. Brownsville began its comeback with a 21-18 third-quarter edge.

Chartiers-Houston 60, Carmichaels 54 – Max Reddout tossed in a team-high 19 points to lift the Buccaneers past the Mikes in non-section action.

John Popeck added 18 points and Jordan Cypher 12.

For Carmichaels, Jeremy Ganocy scored a game-high 21 points, while Joby Lapkowicz added 10.

Carmichaels falls to 0-3.

Girls basketball

Jefferson-Morgan 43, Waynesburg Central 36 – Ashley Phillips paced the Lady Rockets with 14 points in a non-section win over the visiting Lady Raiders.

Phillips connected on four shots from the floor, including one three-pointer, and was 5 of 8 from the foul line.

Rachel Weaver added 10 points for Jefferson-Morgan, which evened its mark at 2-2.

Waynesburg led 9-8 after one quarter, but J-M rallied to forge a 22-22 halftime tie. The Lady Rockets then took a three-point lead after three quarters.

The Lady Raiders’ Miatta Toothman paced all scorers with 15 points, 14 coming from the field on seven field goals.

Mapletown 53, Burgettstown 34 – The Lady Maples built an 11-point lead in the first quarter, and then cruised to a non-section home victory over the Lady Blue Devils.

Mapletown (3-1) extended the lead to 16 at the half, and added six more points to the advantage after three quarters.

Brittany Buckhalter had a double-double for the Lady Maples with a game-high 21 points and 17 rebounds. Kayla Stevulak scored 15 while Bethany Ross and Cinnamon Kavlick both pulled down 10 rebounds.

Annie Dugas was the only player for Burgettstown (0-4) with 12 points.

High school wrestling

Albert Gallatin 37, Elizabeth-Forward 35 – The Colonials’ Cody Mitchell eked out a 2-1 decision over Darren Lytle to rally visiting AG past the Warriors in Section 2-AAA action.

Three straight wins – a technical fall at 130 pounds, a decision at 135 and a forfeit at 140 – gave Elizabeth-Forward a 35-34 lead with one match remaining.

For Albert Gallatin, Jeff Dulaney, Lance Bryson, Dave Mitchell, Dylan Bella and Matt Lowery won by fall. The Colonials’ Tom Gates picked up a victory by decision.

Albert Gallatin improves to 2-0.

West Greene 40, Carlynton 30 – Eight Pioneers picked up victories in a Section 1-AA match with the Cougars.

Garett Johnston (125), Kevin Courtwright (130), Josh Durbin (145) and Patrick Morris (171) won by fall, while Tucker Conklin (152) recorded a major decision win.

Keith Watson (160) and Chris Horr (189) both won by decision, while Colton Blumer (112) won by forfeit.

West Greene improves to 2-0.

Girls swimming

Derry 102, Belle Vernon 66 – The Lady Leopards dropped their season opener to the Lady Trojans Monday night.

For Belle Vernon, Sydney Rusak captured two events (200 IM and 100 backstroke), while Alana Puskavich (200 freestyle) and Stacy Hoffman (100 breaststroke) picked up individual victories.

The Lady Leopards’ 400 freestyle relay team of Jessica Couser, Aubree Petrone, Rusak and Puskavich topped the field as well.

Boys swimming

Derry 95, Belle Vernon 74 – Despite two individual wins by Andre Maldonado, the Leopards fell to the Trojans Monday.

Maldonado won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Aaron Mikula (100 fly), Zachary Wardle (100 freestyle) and Jeremy Matta (100 breaststroke) also recorded victories.

Belle Vernon’s 200 medley relay team of Cory Wyke, Matta, Mikula and Maldonado captured first place.

Men’s basketball

Waynesburg College 69, Juniata 66 – Junior guard Tim Drakeley came off the bench and tied a career high, scoring nine of his team-high 16 points in the final five minutes to lift the Yellow Jackets to a victory in their home opener at the Marisa Fieldhouse.

Drakeley was 5 of 6 from the field, including 2 of 3 from three-point range. He played a total of 15 minutes.

Marc Lodovico and Jered Gambie joined Drakeley in double figures with 10 and 12 points, respectively.

Waynesburg (3-2) opens Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Saturday when it travels to Grove City for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
