Yellow Jackets defeat Grove City in OT, 89-82 Tim Drakeley hit a 3-point at the end of regulation to force overtime, and Waynesburg made the most of the opportunity Saturday with an 89-82 victory at Grove City in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Yellow Jackets (1-0, 4-2) rallied from a 9-point halftime deficit, capped by Drakeley trey. Waynesburg outscored the Wolverines 12-5 in the overtime period.

Drakeley finished with 17 points and dished out a team-high seven assists. Beau Wilson scored a team-high 22 points, making 10-of-12 from the foul line. Marc Lodovico scored 19 and Jeff Linden added 11.

Ryan Gerber led Grove City (0-1, 2-4) with 19 points.

California (Pa.) 88, Wheeling (W.Va.) Jesuit 65 – The Vulcans built a 19-point lead by the half, and then cruised in the second half for a non-conference home victory.

Ron Banks scored a game-high 22 points for California (5-1) while Kelvin Green also topped the 20-point plateau with 21. John Owns finished with 12, including 4-of-4 from the foul line, to go with a team-high six assists and seven steals.

Colin Howard led Wheeling Jesuit (4-2) with 20 points. Ricky Yahn added 14.

Women’s basketball

Grove City 57, Waynesburg 44 – The Yellow Jackets came back from an 18-point deficit to tie the game with about eight minutes remaining in the game, but the Lady Wolverines (1-0, 2-6) had too much in the tank for a home victory in the PAC opener for both teams.

Waynesburg (0-1, 3-5) was led by Michaelene Jones, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Thomas More 58, Saint Vincent 48 – Connellsville graduate Ashley Benzio had a defensive rebound, a blocked shot and a steal in 10 minutes of action as the Lady Bearcats dropped their PAC opening game at home.

West Virginia 77, Duquesne 42 – Sparkle Davis scored 19 of her 21 points in the first half to lead the Mountaineers to a home victory Friday night.

Uniontown graduate Jocelyn Chandler scored eight points, and Albert Gallatin grad Loui Hall finished with six points.

Boys basketball

Frazier 53, Southmoreland 47 – The Scotties rallied with an 18-13 fourth quarter, but the effort came up a bit short for the host team in the title game. Frazier led 40-29 after three quarters on the strength of a 15-5 third quarter.

Jim Traynor and Derek Miller shared scoring honors for the Commodores (3-0) with 10 points apiece. Mike Dziak grabbed 10 rebounds.

Heath Handford was the lone Southmoreland player in double figures with 12.

High school wrestling

Chartiers-Houston Invitational – Albert Gallatin’s Lance Bryson won the 171-pound bracket and was named the Outstanding Wrestler. Brad Zitney (135) was second while Matt Lowry (125) and David Mitchell (215) finished third. Jeff Dulaney (152) was fourth.

College track & field

Kent State Golden Flash Gala – Brad Rager was less than .2 seconds off the fastest time in the men’s 400-meter as the California (Pa.) junior led the Vulcans at the indoor meet.

Rager finished his heat, which he won, in 48.51 seconds. He finished third in his heat of the 200 and joined Anthony Morinello, Sean Rentler and Ben Way to finish fourth in their heat of the 1,600 relay.

Junior thrower Randy Kochik was his flight in the shot put with a throw of 43-5. Belle Vernon graduate Ryan Moravec was seventh in the 5,000 with a time of 15:33.25.

Anthony Freer was third in the weight throw with a toss of 44-7, with teammates Brian Melcher in fifth (41-31/4) and Randy Kochik in sixth (39-10).

Danielle Malay was third in her heat of the 400 with a time of 1:01.23.
