Lady Gators too much for visiting Waynesburg The Geibel Catholic defense held visiting Waynesburg Central to six points or less in each of the four quarters, and the first-quarter offense did the rest Thursday night as the Lady Gators cruised to a 68-18 non-section home victory.
Geibel (4-2) opened 23-4 lead in the first quarter, and extended its advantage to 42-8 at the half.
Mia White followed Wednesday’s 20-point performance with a similar effort, scoring a game-high 23 points for the Lady Gators. Sabrina Szabo scored 16 and Sarah Erdely added 13 to the effort.
Miatta Toothman was the lone player for Wayneburg (0-7) in double figures with 12 points.
Mount Pleasant 61, Laurel Highlands 53 – The Fillies held a slim 36-34 lead at halftime, but the Lady Vikings surged into the lead in the third quarter and finished it out for a Section 3-AAA victory at home.
Mount Pleasant (3-1, 4-4) moved into a 48-43 lead at the end of the third quarter, and then held on for the win with a 13-10 fourth quarter.
Sabrina Jackson was one of three players for Laurel Highlands in double figures with 19. Ashley Haragos scored 13 and Marissa Guynn added 11.
Abbey Way scored a game-high 25 points for the Lady Vikings.
Laurel Highlands falls to 0-3 in the section and 1-5 overall. The Vikings improve to 3-1 in the section and 4-4 overall.
Duquesne 64, Frazier 27 – The Lady Commodores had problems with visiting Duquesne, dropping the Section 3-A opener at home. Frazier fell behind 25-7 after the first quarter and 39-14 at the halftime break.
Bridget Walker led Duquesne (1-0, 3-3) with 22 points. Tyneka Barlow scored 13 in the win while Taylor Fulton added 10.
Meghan Leary was the lone Frazier player in double figures with 11.
Frazier slips to 0-1 in the section and 3-3 overall.
North Star 60, Turkeyfoot Valley 26 – The Lady Rams fell behind early, and couldn’t recover for a West-Pac South Conference loss at home.
Autumn Koscheck scored 16 points for Turkeyfoot Valley to go with a team-high five rebounds.
Brittany Danel, Nicole Pelesky and Nikki Smith all scored 10 points for North Star.
Turkeyfoot (0-3, 0-3) is on the road Monday at Portage.
Latrobe 69, Albert Gallatin 23 – Latrobe outscored Albert Gallatin 44-11 in the second and third periods alone en route to a dominating Section 1-AAAA victory.
The Lady Wildcats (3-3, 1-0) were paced by Cortney Sherwin, who poured in a game-high 22 points. Also putting up double-digit scoring efforts were Emily Fenton (14) and Lindsay Muchnock (16).
The Lady Colonials (2-5, 0-1) were led by high-scorer Marquis Demniak with nine points.
Brownsville 57, Chartiers-Houston 39 – Nicole Kerestine, Kayleigh Davis and Emily Lucosh all scored in double digits to lead Brownsville past Chartiers-Houston in Section 5-AA action.
Lucosh led the Lady Falcons (1-0, 4-1) with 13 points, while Kerestine and Davis added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Chartiers-Houston (0-1, 1-4) was paced by Kelly Rosemeier’s game-high 19 points.
Southmoreland 66, Belle Vernon 48 – Vanessa Abel proved, once again, why she may be the most dangerous scorer in the WPIAL girls’ ranks by rolling up 35 points during the Lady Scot’s win over Belle Vernon.
Anna Coffman helped out Southmoreland (3-0, 6-1) by adding 12 points in the victory.
Jessalyn Timko and Kayla Watson each scored 11 to pace the Lady Leopards (0-4, 1-6).
In other girls action, Bentworth bested visiting Carmichaels, 54-23.
Boys basketball
California 60, McGuffey 40 – Led by 25 points from Chris McVicker, California had no trouble with visiting McGuffey in a non-section match-up. Travis Van Olst also scored in double digits for the Trojans with 15.
California improves to 4-1 overall.
The Highlanders (0-6) were paced by Luke Baker who drained five three-pointers, which made up all of his team-high 15 points.
In other boys action, Mapletown dropped a non-section road game to Cornell, 68-39.
High school wrestling
Greensburg Salem 44, Laurel Highlands 24 – Greensburg Salem took nine-of-14 bouts from Laurel Highlands en route to a win.
The Mustangs (0-2) got just two pins in the loss and received a forfeit at 103 along with a pair of decision victories. The match was the season-opener for the Golden Lions.
Men’s basketball
Waynesburg 83, La Roche 69 – The Yellow Jackets shot a season-best 55.8 percent from the field and Jeff Linden tied a career-high 24 points as Waynesburg rolled to a non-conference victory at home.
Three other players were in double figures for Waynesburg, including Tim Drakeley with 15, Beau Wilson’s 12 and Marc Lodovico with 13.
Adam Kostewicz scored a team-high 21 points to go with 11 rebounds for La Roche (2-8), while Stacy Grady finished with 20 points.
Waynesburg improves to 5-2 overall.
