Waynesburg women dominate boards in win The Yellow Jackets grabbed a season-high 57 rebounds, including 21 offensive boards, and Waynesburg used the advantage for a 69-51 non-conference victory Saturday over visiting Mount Aloysius College.
Waynesburg (4-5) built a 41-29 halftime lead and cruised to the victory with a 28-22 second half.
The Yellow Jackets’ Johnna Deco led the assault on the boards with a game- and career-high 11 rebounds. Waynesburg coach Terry Acker played 11 players and 10 scored with Katie Lewandowski leading the way with 10 points. Jenna Pratte, Denise Kennedy and Waynesburg Central graduate Jeanette Wonsettler all scored nine points.
Lindsey Bush scored a game-high 13 points for Mount Aloysius (3-6) with teammates Shana Swan and Brianna Baker both adding 10.
Connellsville graduate Brooke Bryner scored six points and pulled in two rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets remain home this week against Geneva on Wednesday.
Boys basketball
Albert Gallatin 64, Peters Twp. 59 – Jawaan Alston had a successful return to the Colonials lineup with a game-high 20 points as Albert Gallatin defeated the Indians in the Washington County Hoopfest played at Washington High School.
Albert Gallatin (4-2) trailed by four points in the first quarter, but rallied back for a halftime tie. The Colonials fell behind by four points once again after three quarters before pulling away in the fourth quarter for the win.
Albert Gallatin’s Jake Magerko hit three 3-pointers to finish with 19 points. Marc Marshall was also in double figures with 13.
Pat Russo led Peters Twp. (2-4) with 14 points.
Mapletown also played in the Hoopfest, but the Maples weren’t as fortunate as they dropped a 72-29 decision to Burgettstown.
Latrobe 82, Albert Gallatin 58 – The Colonials had a rough start in their Section 1-AAAA opener with a loss at Latrobe. Aaron Cromwell scored 21 for Albert Gallatin, with Jarrett Dotson and Marshall adding 12.
Brent Heckel led the Wildcats with 20 points.
Monessen 75, California 71 – The Trojans led at halftime, but the Greyhounds outscored the visitors, 50-31, in the second half for a non-section victory.
Josh Arnold scored a game-high 37 points for Monessen (5-3) while Tim Tyree added 17.
Travis VanOlst led the Trojans (4-2) with 18 points. Chris McVicker and Mike Hrivnak both finished with 15 points.
In other boys action, Latrobe handed Uniontown a 70-54 loss at home.
High school wrestling
Albert Gallatin 44, North Hills 30; Albert Gallatin 62, Perry 9; Albert Gallatin 48, Franklin Regional 24; Albert Gallatin 64, Avonworth 12 – The Colonials had a perfect day at the Franklin Regional Duals and Lance Bryson led the way as the day’s Outstanding Wrestler.
Bryson, who wrestled at 171 pounds, was one of several wrestlers to finish the day 4-0.
The others included Dylan Bella (119), Matt Lowry (125), Jeff Dulaney (152) and Kevin Bella (189).
John Thomas (112) finished 3-0.
Albert Gallatin (7-0) resumes section action Wednesday when it hosts Uniontown.
