Uniontown girls ride big second quarter to victory over AG Lawren Davis scored in a game-high 12 points, including one 3-pointer as Uniontown downed Albert Gallatin 40-28 non-section girls basketball game Saturday.
Deadlocked at 4-4 after the first half, the Lady Red Raiders went on a 16-4 second-quarter run and never looked back as they picked up their ninth overall victory this season against seven losses.
Candice Adams was next in the scoring column with nine points.
Rachel Dunham and Megan Angelo shared high scoring honors for the Lady Colonials each with nine points.
Albert Gallatin hopes to snap a six-game losing streak Thursday at Kiski Area, while Uniontown hosts Mount Pleasant also on Thursday.
Brownsville 46, Waynesburg Central 44 – Emily Lucosh tossed in 16 points as Brownsville edged past Waynesburg Central in a non-section contest.
Kalie Davis and Rebecca Bruschi added nine points a piece for the Lady Falcons (6-9).
Megan Summersgill led all scorers for Waynesburg with 20 points, including a perfect 4-of-4 outing from the foul line. Teammate Lauren Becker added 10 points and was also perfect (4-of-4) at the foul line.
Wrestling
Albert Gallatin 41, West Allegheny 27 – The Albert Gallatin wrestling team posted its fourteenth win of the season with a home victory over West Allegheny.
Jarrett Milligan kicked things off for AG in the 119-class bout with a forfeit win.
At 145, Jeff Dulaney pinned Nate Carr in 2:35 followed by Dave Bryson’s tech fall victory over Mark Vauno, 18-3.
The Colonials won the next four matches as Mark Brown pinned Nick Noyes in 5:26, Lance Bryson pinned Jake Leninsky in 1:33 and Kevin Bella pinned Mark Washabursh in 1:28.
At 215, Dave Mitchell pinned Justin Keally in 1:49.
Albert Gallatin (14-2) host Elizabeth-Forward Wednesday.
Men’s basketball
Penn State-Fayette 98, Penn State-Wilkes Barre 59 – Six Penn State-Fayette players scored in double figures as they rolled to an easy victory over host Penn State-Wilkes Barre.
George Lemon led the way with 22 points followed by Jamie Kowalczyk’s 17. Chris Jacobs was next in the scoring column with 15 followed by John Bass’s 14. Eric Leech and Lamar Hill each added 10 points respectively.
Leech added eight rebounds as did teammate Reily Tidholm.
In Friday night’s game, the Roaring Lions downed Penn State-Scranton 91-60. Lemon scored a game-high 19 points.
Penn State-Fayette (6-9, 6-2) hosts Penn State-Harrisburg Wednesday.
Waynesburg 70, Grove City 60 – Three Waynesburg players scored in double figures, led by a game-high 17 points from junior guard Beau Wilson, as they downed Grove City on Saturday for its first conference win of the season. The Yellow Jackets improved to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in league play, while the Wolverines are even in the conference at 1-1 and stand at 5-10 overall.
After trailing for the first portion of the opening half, by one or two possessions, Waynesburg tied the score at 20-20 with 11:34 remaining on a layup from junior reserve Jeff Linden. The bucket by the junior triggered a 17-5 run over a five-plus minute stretch for the Yellow Jackets, who seized a 37-25 lead with the run.
The Yellow Jackets converted 11 first-half Wolverine turnovers into 18 points, as they finished the half with a 45.7 field goal percentage.
Grove City continued its hot shooting early in the second period, tying the score at 43-43 with 18:04 to play before Waynesburg gained the lead on the ensuing possession on a bucket by Lodovico.
The Yellow Jackets expanded their lead to double-digits, 55-45, with almost 10:56 remaining after mounting a 10-2 run, including a tip-in by sophomore Josh Parisi, who finished the game with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Wolverines cut the deficit to two points with 4:39 left on a lay-up by Ryan Gerber. Waynesburg hit the next four field goals including a three-pointer by Wilson that made the score 64-57 with 2:26 remaining.
Waynesburg, who forced 23 turnovers in the win, claimed its first victory in the Grove City College Arena since Jan. 31, 1998. The Yellow Jacket win also snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Wolverines.
Waynesburg continues conference play Jan. 16, when it plays host to Thiel College for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
Women’s basketball
Grove City 57, Waynesburg 48 – Juniors Denise Kennedy and Katie Lewandowski combined to score 31 of the 48 Waynesburg points in a loss to conference rival Grove City.
The Wolverines, who were led by a game and career-high 21 points from guard Elyse Bogusz, improved to 6-9 overall this season, including a 2-0 mark in the Presidents’ Athletics Conference. Meanwhile, Waynesburg fell to 8-8 this season and continues to look for its first conference win of the season.
Lewandowski, the team’s leading scorer this season, finished the game with a team-high 17 points on 5-of-14 attempts, including four 3-pointers.
Grove City seized its first lead of the first half, 20-19, with 5:11 remaining on a Rachel McCoy basket, who finished the game with 15 points. After a pair of McCoy free throws gave the Wolverines a two-point lead, Waynesburg evened the score with a Lewandowski trey.
Over the final 3:00 of the half, the score remained a one-possession game with Grove City taking a 30-27 lead into halftime behind a pair of free throws from Bogusz during the final minute.
Bogusz finished the first half with 11 points.
The Wolverines expanded its halftime lead to seven points, 38-31 in the opening seven minutes of the second half on a bucket by Mallory Skarupa. Following a Yellow Jacket timeout, Waynesburg scored nine unanswered points, taking a 40-38 lead with 11:31 remaining. During the stretch, Kennedy scored five of her 14 points, while Lewandowski hit a 3-pointer.
Grove City staked a run over the next 10 minutes that put the game away. During the span, Bogusz scored 10 of the 15 GCC points to help the Wolverines take a 53-42 lead with 1:23 left to play.
Waynesburg struggled to cut into the deficit, getting the game as close as seven points, 55-48, with 32 seconds left on a pair of free throws from Lewandowski.
Both teams struggled from the field in the contest, shooting less than 40 percent. The Yellow Jackets manages a 37.2 percent (16 of 43) from the field, while the Wolverines shot slightly better at 37.3 percent (19 of 51).
Waynesburg held a slim advantage in the rebound category, 36-34, with five players registering at least five rebounds, including six from Lewandowski and Candice Eyerman, who was limited to six points.
