Strikes and Spares
Steelers’ Bettis an avid bowler Today is a big day for Pittsburgh sports fans, with the Steelers taking on the Colts in Indianapolis for the right to advance to the AFC championship game. A win will make it one step closer to Super Bowl XL in Detroit.
Winning the next two games will be of extra importance to one Steeler in particular. That, of course, would be Jerome Bettis. He grew up in the rough streets of Detroit and would like to come back to his hometown to get that elusive Super Bowl ring.
As a kid, Jerome was susceptible to getting into trouble, so his parents introduced him to sports to keep him off of the streets.
One sport that he took a liking to in particular, besides football, was bowling. In fact, even today, “The Bus” is an avid bowler. He has a lifetime average of better than 200 and has rolled a perfect 300 game.
When he decides to retire, which may be this year, it looks like he might be able to give bowling a shot.
Just think, the fifth-leading rusher in NFL history, butting heads with Pete Weber, Walter Ray Williams Jr., and Jason Couch.
I’m sure if Jerome put his mind to it, he could be just as successful at bowling as he has been in football.
I’m sure there are many other football players that find bowling to be a good diversion from the rigors of a season. In watching TV over the last couple weeks, I discovered that the defensive line of the national champion Texas Longhorns bowled every Thursday night during the season to let off steam and relax.
Also many of the NFL players host bowling events to benefit charities.
So bowling is a sport that many people take an interest in, including athletes both collegiate and professional.
In the PBA this week, five bowlers will compete for the championship at the Dick Weber Open at the Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley, Calif.
Mike Machuga will face Chris Loschetter in the first match of the five bowler stepladder finals. Norm Duke, Jason Couch and Parker Bohn III will also compete.
