Fagler wins one-hitter while Weibl loses his

By The 4 min read

There were a pair of one-hitters thrown in Fayette County Baseball League action on Thursday. Only one of those pitching gems was rewarded with a victory, however.

Marty Fagler allowed only an infield single in six innings to propel Mario’s to a 3-0 win over Redd Dawgs, and Todd Dunham made it an all ex-Mountaineer day on the mound by tossing a perfect seventh inning to earn the save.

Meanwhile, Mill Run’s Chris Weibl held Carmichaels to one hit in 5 2-3 innings, but that was all the Copperheads needed to pull out a 1-0 road victory behind Ron Nopwasky’s three-hitter.

The left-handed Fagler was perfect through the first five innings against Redd Dawgs as Mario’s improved to (14-2-2). Dave Jones broke up Fagler’s bid at a no-hitter with a two-out infield single in the sixth.

Fagler walked one and struck out six. Dunham struck out one in his lone inning. Mario’s played error-less ball behind Fagler and Dunham, who are both former West Virginia University pitchers.

Trevor Consavage pitched well in defeat for Redd Dawgs (11-6), surrendering three runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in going all the way.

Mario’s got to Consavage for two runs in the second. Matt Chalfant and Jim Cales both walked, and Ryan Robowski moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Shayne Busti made it 1-0 with a run-scoring single and Bill Rouse followed with a sacrifice fly.

Busti capped the game’s scoring with an RBI single in the sixth.

Jason Greene had two hits for manager Lou Pasquale’s team, including a double.

Mario’s travels to Waynesburg today for a 6 p.m. game.

Carmichaels (11-4) and Mill Run (9-9) were locked in a scoreless tie until the top of the sixth. Weibl hit Eric Holt with a pitch with one out and Jeff Thompson’s ground out moved the runner to second. After Gene Franks walked, Zach Solly blooped a single into right field to bring in Holt with the game’s only run.

Jeff Kooser got the final out of the inning with the bases loaded to keep the score at 1-0. Carmichaels also left the bases loaded in the second and stranded two runners in the third.

Weibl allowed the one run on one hit with five walks and two strikeouts. Kooser retired all four batters he faced.

Nopwasky squelched a couple of Mill Run threats. Jeremy Miller hit a lead-off double in the second, but was stranded there, and Andrew Spargur smacked a one-out double in the sixth, but he failed to reach third base as well.

Nopwasky struck out five and walked one.

“It was a great game,” Copperheads manager Dickie Krause said. “Ron had one of the most well-pitched game I’ve gotten in the last three or four years, and we’ve had a lot of good ones. He was outstanding.”

Krause was just happy to escape with a victory of any kind.

“Any time you win a game at Mill Run it’s something to savor,” Krause said. “It’s is a very difficult place to win. You know you’re always going to be in for a low-scoring game decided by one or two runs.”

Carmichaels hosts Redd Dawgs on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Wana B Heros 5, Potter’s Clubhouse 1 – On a day of many great pitching performances in the County League, Justin Corso chipped in as well with a five-hitter in Wana B Heros’ victory at Potter’s Clubhouse.

Corso walked one and struck out five.

Wana B Heros (7-10-1) scored all the runs it would need in the second inning against Ryan Guthrie. Andy Mazur doubled, took second on Corso’s ground out and scored on John Pochron’s single. Shane Tonkavich was hit by a pitch and Alan Smodic followed with an RBI single for one of his two hits in the game. Jono Menhart’s run-scoring single made it 3-0.

Potter’s (3-11) scored its only run in the third on Howie King’s RBI single. Potter’s loaded the bases later in the frame, but Corso retired Casey Kupets on an inning-ending fly out.

Guthrie gave up six hits and three walks with three strikeouts in going the distance. An infield error on Craig Hriblan’s ground ball allowed two unearned runs to score against Guthrie in the fourth to cap the game’s scoring.

Jeremy Thomas and Phil Gratchic each had two hits for Potter’s.

Wana B Heroes travels to Bud Murphy’s for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday.
