Colonial evens Legion playoff set with Carmichaels Colonial played near-flawless ball behind David Novotney’s 10 strikeouts to tie the Fayette American Legion playoff series with a 10-7 win over Carmichaels Saturday.
“Kevin pitched one heck of a ball game,” said Colonial skipper Nick Petrus. “The bats finally came alive and that’s what wins games.”
In addition to Novotney’s 10 strikeouts, he also added three singles and drove in a run.
Teammates Tony Battaglini, Travis Tonai and Nick Eadie each singled twice and Brian Liptok singled and drove in three runs, including an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Kevin Garbutt also added to the offence with a triple, two singles and an RBI.
Brandon Rumbaugh went home with the loss. He worked five innings, posted four strikeouts and four walks.
With the series tied at one game apiece, the best-of-three series will be decided at 2 p.m. today at Carmichaels.
“We stand a chance tomorrow if we play errorless ball,” said Petrus. “If we start making errors again, there goes the ball game.”
County League
Carmichaels 8, Redd Dawgs 2 – Joe Lloyd hurled a three-hitter with eight strikeouts as Carmichaels cruised to an easy Fayette County League win over Redd Dawgs.
It was Lloyd’s first win on the season.
Zach Solly doubled, singled and drove in two runs to lead the Carmichaels offensive attack.
Teammate Chris Buncic doubled and Charlie Humes singled twice.
Craig Conforti went on record as the losing pitcher. He worked six innings, struck out three and walked five.
Shane Molyneaux doubled for the lone Redd Dawgs extra base hit.
Carmichaels is back in action Monday at Waynesburg.
