Kendrick upsets Spadea in Hall of Fame Championships

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – Robert Kendrick followed up a fine Wimbledon performance by beating fifth-seeded Vince Spadea, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships on Monday. Kendrick, a wild card entrant who missed nearly eight months after right wrist surgery last July, used a powerful serve against Spadea and showed the form that gave Wimbledon runner-up Rafael Nadal a scare in a second-round match.

In other first-round matches, Paul Capdeville upset 4th-seeded Gilles Muller, 7-6 (7), 6-2; Michael Russell edged Benjamin Becker 6-3, 4-6, 6-4; Rik De Voest beat Lukasz Kubot, 6-2, 6-2; 6th-seeded Jurgen Melzer eliminated Razvan Sabau, 7-5, 7-5; and Igor Kunitsyn defeated Bobby Reynolds, 7-5, 6-2.

In qualifying final matches, Wayne Arthurs got past Noam Okun 6-1, 7-5; Jesse Levine edged Brendan Evans, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5; and Wesley Whitehouse beat Lars Burgsmuller, 6-2, 6-3.

Swedish Open

BASTAD, Sweden – Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia beat Alberto Martin 6-4, 6-1 at the Swedish Open.

Spaniards Tommy Robredo and Juan Carlos Ferrero were extended to three sets in their opening-round matches. Second-seeded Robredo rallied to beat Gilles Simon of France 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and eighth-seeded Ferrero defeated Swedish wild card Ervin Eleskovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Swiss Open

GSTAAD, Switzerland – Top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic defeated Albert Portas of Spain 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the first round of the Allianz Swiss Open.

Third-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain topped Dick Norman of Belgium 6-4, 6-3 and will meet Daniele Bracciali of Italy, who rallied to beat Flavio Saretta of Brazil 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

Eighth-seeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain defeated Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-4, 6-4.
