Humes helps Copperheads ‘walk off’ with victory

Charlie Humes’ walk-off two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday capped a 3-run outburst to give Carmichaels a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Mill Run in Fayette County Baseball League action. Brian Gerginski led off the seventh for Carmichaels with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on Chris Buncic’s single. Gerginski scored on Joe Leonard’s sacrifice fly. Leonard then scored on Humes’ home run.

Both teams scored a run in their half of the first inning, but Mill Run put up a pair of runs in the second for a 3-1 lead. The Copperheads cut their deficit in half with a single run in the third, but Bob Fulton’s triple scored Ryan Firestone to give Mill Run a 4-2 lead.

Ron Nopwasky (7-2) went the distance for the win, striking out eight and walking two. Humes had a big game, finishing 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Buncic had a pair of singles while Leonard had a triple.

Jeff Kooser and Fulton both had two hits for Mill Run.

The two teams meet again this evening when Carmichaels (20-6) travels to Mill Run (12-13-1) in the next-to-last regular season game.

Bud Murphy’s 9, California 8 – Brian Sankovich’s grand slam propelled the visitors to a 6-run sixth inning to rally past California for a Fayette County Baseball League victory.

Sankovich’s blast tied the game at 8-8. Richie Means singled home the winning run, an unearned tally.

Bud’s scored two in the top of the first, but California came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Ryan Kabana’s two-run home run in the bottom of the second led to a 3-run California rally and a 5-2 lead.

Bud’s cut the lead with a run in the top of the fifth, but California exploded for three runs in the bottom of the inning for an 8-3 advantage.

Sankovich went 4-for-4 with an intentional walk and five RBIs. Means added a pair of singles. Brian Hilbert went the distance, improving to 4-2. He allowed eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits, striking out five and walking one.

Kabana added a double to his homer. Rob Galis smacked three singles for California while Jason Dayner had two singles. Nate Hopkins and Jason Britton both doubled.

California travels to Bud Murphy’s (14-8-3) this evening for a game at Breakneck Field.

Wana B Heros 2, Redd Dawgs 2 – Wana B Heros tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and both teams had opportunities to win the game late that failed for a Fayette County Baseball League tie.

Ryan Russell and Dan Thomas walked for the Redd Dawgs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then Trevor Consavage singled to load the bases. Mark Woleslagle walked Russell home and Nate Helster’s one-out sacrifice fly scored Thomas.

Wana B Heros (9-14-2) scored in the fifth when Jono Menhart and Craig Hriblan walked. Phil Anderson’s ground ball forced Hriblan out at second and Menhart kept coming around for the first run.

In the sixth, Alan Smodic led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Shane Tonkavitch. Kowalczyk brought home Smodic with a single.

Redd Dawgs (17-8-1) let a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh slide by after Dave Jones tripled and Wana B Heros walked the bases loaded with one out. Jared Weaver left the bases loaded to preserve the tie.

Wana B Heros had a chance in the ninth when Drew Denham singled and Jamie Kowalczyk was hit by a pitch. Craig Hriblan was walked with two outs to load the bases, but reliever Consavage got the final out to strand the three runners.
