County League playoffs set to begin Sunday
The Fayette County Baseball League picture is set after Bud Murphy’s won its season finale and Waynesburg defeated Potter’s Clubhouse in the pigtail game Friday. Bud Murphy’s batted around in the second inning, finishing the regular season in style with a 16-3 victory over visiting California. Waynesburg had a big inning as well, scoring six runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 9-4 win.
Waynesburg (7-21) be on the road Sunday, facing top-seeded Mario’s (23-3-2) at 5 p.m. in the first game of the best-of-3 series. Second-seeded Carmichaels (21-7) will host California (8-20) at 5 p.m. with Bud’s (17-8-3) hosting Mill Run at 5 p.m. Wana B Heros (11-15-2) will be on the road at Redd Dawgs (18-9-1) at 1 p.m.
The second game of the series will reverse sites on Monday with all games beginning at 5:45 p.m. If necessary, the third game will return to Sunday’s host sites on Wednesday.
Bud Murphy’s sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the second inning, scoring seven runs. California countered with two runs on Ryan Kabana’s homer in the top of the third inning. Bud’s scored a single run in the fourth, but California answered with Matt Hartman’s solo shot in the fifth.
Bud’s put the game out of reach with a five-run fifth inning on the strength of Wes Hughes’ three-run home run, adding a couple more runs in the sixth.
Richie Means (1-0) went six innings for the win, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out four and walking three. Kevin Hiles pitched the seventh.
Bud’s only had nine players, but eight had hits and all nine scored at least one run.
Ryan Miscik, Brian Showman, Hiles, Alex Lefcakis, Means and Hughes all doubled for Bud’s. Miscik pounded out four hits while Hiles and Hughes both had three hits.
Waynesburg had a little help in its big inning. Anthony Belcastro brought home the first two runs in the fourth with a double. J.W. Kayla followed with an RBI single, and then an error led to a couple of unearned runs. Dom Winters’ sacrifice fly brought home the sixth run of the inning.
Belcastro went 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Kayla was 2-for-4 with a single and triple. Travis Largent (1-0) went the distance for Waynesburg, striking out seven and walking two.
