Erdei retains WBO title

1 min read

OBERHAUSEN, Germany (AP) – Hungary’s Zsolt Erdei retained his WBO light-heavyweight title, outpointing Germany’s Thomas Ulrich in a one-sided decision Saturday. Erdei (25-0, 15 knockouts) opened cuts against his stablemate and former sparring partner on the nose, and closed Ulrich’s left eye from persistent jabs.

The judges scored it 120-108, 118-100 and 116-112 for Erdei in his sixth title defense.

He ran into trouble only once. In the final round, Ulrich (29-3, 19 knockouts) stunned him with a right, but didn’t come close to getting the knockout he needed.

The 31-year-old Ulrich, who won Olympic bronze and was once considered one of Germany’s biggest talents, lost his second title fight.
