LH boys, Uniontown girls have their basketball seasons extended
The Laurel Highlands boys and Uniontown girls had their basketball seasons extended on Tuesday night. California’s boys squad wasn’t so lucky, however.
All three area schools lost in the WPIAL quarterfinals, but needed victories in the semifinals by the teams that eliminated them to advance into the PIAA tournament.
The Mustangs fell to Moon, which dragged coach Rick Hauger’s team into the state playoffs by dumping Thomas Jefferson, 74-60, in Class AAA.
Uniontown was knocked out by top-seeded Hopewell, but the Vikings’ 57-45 win over Kittanning gives the Class AAA Lady Raiders their first ever berth in the PIAA playoffs.
California was bumped off by Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, which lost a 59-57 heartbreaker to No. 2 Duquesne, thus ending the Trojans’ season.
The Class A final between the Dukes and Clairton will still have a local slant to it, though.
The No. 4 Bears defeated top-seeded Serra Catholic, 60-55, in the other Class A semifinal after falling to the Eagles twice during the regular season. That means Clairton coach Pete Logan will be seeking his second WPIAL title, having guided Brownsville to the 2001 Class AAA crown. Logan still lives in Brownsville.
The Connellsville boys will have their fate determined tonight when the team that edged them out, top-seeded Bethel Park, takes on No. 4 McKeesport in the Quad-A semifinals.
