Mapletown splits with Northern Maryland Mapletown lost a tough one in the first game of Saturday’s non-section doubleheader, but the Maples rebounded in the second game for a split at home. Northern (Md.) won the first game in eight innings, 3-2, with the Maples taking the nightcap, 3-0.

Jesse Boord went the distance in the victory, striking out one and walking one while scattering two singles.

Mapletown opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a run, adding single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Cory Dillinger went 3-for-3 to lead the Mapletown attack.

Mapletown scored first in the first inning in the opening game, but Northern tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth and moved into the lead with a single run in the sixth.

Mapletown rallied to send the game into extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Brock Glotfelty broke the tie when he deposited a 2-0 fastball in the top of the eighth inning over the fence for a solo home run. Glotfelty picked up the win after entering the game in the seventh inning, adding a double to finish 2-for-4 at the plate.

Boord had a double and two singles to lead Mapletown.

The Maples (1-1) travel to Clay-Battelle (W.Va.) Monday at 4:30 p.m.

College baseball

Westminster 4, Waynesburg 3; Westminster 5, Waynesburg 4 – The Yellow Jackets were swept on the road in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action in a couple of one-run losses.

Waynesburg tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third inning in the first game, but the Titans scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth.

Justin Schrader went the distance in the loss, pitching six innings with five strikeouts and two walks while allowing six hits. Brian Gerginski went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Brian Andrews led the Titans (2-1, 7-7) with a home run and three RBIs. Jake Zatchok (2-0) picked up the first out in the seventh before giving way to Andy Robison to earn the save.

In the second game, Waynesburg (1-2, 9-5-1) tied the game with two runs in the fourth only to have Westminster regain the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Yellow Jackets closed the gap with two runs in the top of the sixth, but Robison allowed only one hit in two innings of relief for his second save of the day. Gary DeBaldo improved to 2-1 with the win.

Brad Griffith (2-1) went the distance for the Yellow Jackets. He allowed nine hits, although only two of the five runs were earned. Griffith struck out three and walked four. Ryan Group had a double, run scored and RBI for Waynesburg. Brian Gerginski and Justin Marsinko also drove in runs.

College track & field

Raleigh (N.C.) Relays – California (Pa.) had a rough opening day Friday at the relays held at North Carolina State University with only one top 20 performance.

The men’s sprint relay team finished sixth with a time of 3:29.87. Connellsville’s Jon Hall was 28th in the 100 with a time of 11.22 seconds. Brad Rager placed 22nd in the 400 in 49.42.
