Lady Raiders breeze past Lady Trojans
Jen Tandarich tripled and teammate Katie Fisher doubled as the Uniontown girls softball team cruised to an easy 8-1 non-section victory over host California Tuesday. Deadlocked through the first three innings, the Lady Red Raiders broke the game open in with two runs in the fourth inning and four in the sixth.
Davidiene Jobes (1-2) hurled the two-hitter over seven innings. She struck out two and allowed one walk.
Elizabeth Shaw (1-2) suffered the loss. She scattered five hits, allowed eight runs and struck out five.
Uniontown is back in action today at home against Rockwood, while the Lady Trojans host Charleroi today. Both games are at 4 p.m.
Bentworth 10, Jefferson-Morgan 1 – Melissa Rankin tripled, doubled and scored two runs as Bentworth cruised to an easy non-section win over Jefferson-Morgan .
The Lady Bearcats jumped out to an early five-run first-inning lead and never looked back as they held J-M to just a single score in the second inning.
Winning pitcher Alyssa Zrinsek (2-0) fanned 13 Lady Rockets and allowed one walk in seven innings .
Emily Cottle (1-2) came away with the loss. She struck out five and allowed four walks.
Rankin had help offensively as Laurel Marshalek, Stephanie Wytovich and Meghan Sames each doubled.
Jefferson-Morgan (1-2) looks to put one in the win column today on the road against Geibel Catholic.
Baseball
West Greene 10, Clay Battelle 8 – Clay Battelle (W.Va.) led 5-2 after the first three innings, but West Greene erupted for six fifth-inning runs en route to a non-section victory.
Tyler Smith, Justin White, Buck Raber and Ryan Herrington each went 2-for-4. White and Raber doubled and Smith drove in two runs in the victory.
Beau Nakutis (1-0) picked up the win for the Pioneers.
He worked five innings, fanned seven batters and allowed no walks.
Trinity Christian is next up on West Greene’s schedule. The two face off Thursday at Trinity Christian starting at 4 p.m.
Shade 8, Turkeyfoot Valley 4 – Shane Edwards fanned 11 Turkeyfoot Valley batters as Shade rolled to an 8-4 victory in non-section play, before the game was called because of darkness in the fifth inning.
At the plate, Edwards also tripled, while teammate Kevin Kozlick doubled.
Craig McClintock took the loss as he worked four innings, struck out eight and walked four.
The Rams (0-1) host Berlin Thursday at 4 p.m.
Uniontown 3, Ringgold 3 – The Ringold-Uniontown boys baseball game was called due to darkness with the score tied 3-3.
The Red Raiders are back in action Thursday at home against Belle Vernon.
College baseball
Saint Vincent 16, Penn State-Fayette 3 – The Saint Vincent College men’s baseball team jumped out to an early 7-0 lead through the first three innings and never looked back as they cruised to an easy victory over host Penn State-Fayette, The Eberly Campus, in non-conference action.
The Bearcat bats were in full swing as P.J. Conroy, Dan Consuegra and Colin Nickerson each doubled.
Penn State’s Chad Shoyer accounted for two of the Roaring Lions’ three runs with a two-run home run in the fourth.
Shoyer also added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Losing pitcher Bob Madison (0-3) worked five innings and allowed 10 runs on 11 hits. He struck out one and walked two.
Penn State travels to Robert Morris Thursday at 3 p.m.
Gannon 7, California University of Pa. 6; California University of Pa. 16, Gannon 5 – California’s bats broke loose for 13 runs in consecutive innings midway through the second game of a non-league doubleheader vs. Gannon to gain a split vs. the Golden Knights.
Gannon took advantage of two hits, a walk, a balk and one of Cal’s four opening-game errors in the top of the sixth inning to score three runs and gain a 7-6 come-from-behind victory.
The Vulcans had three more errors in the first two innings of the nightcap, falling behind 4-1, before scoring eight runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth on the way to a 16-5 decision.
The second-game win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Vulcans, who will enter Friday’s PSAC West season-opening twinbill vs. Clarion with a 9-11 overall record.
Cal, the defending PSAC West co-champion, will host the Golden Eagles at Washington’s Falconi Field at 1 p.m. Saturday, the two teams square off again at Clarion, again beginning at 1 p.m.
Jr. OF Lee Rohan led the Vulcans with five hits, four runs, two stolen bases and two RBI in the twinbill. Sophomore 3B Robert Hedrick added four hits (including a double and a triple), a walk, three RBI, four stolen bases and was hit by a pitch.
Cal took a 5-4 lead in the opener by scoring three runs in the fourth, scoring twice on an infield throwing error and another run on a Rohan base hit. The Vulcans extended the lead to 6-4 in the fifth when Hedrick singled, stole second, moved to third on an infield grounder then stole home.
Gannon bounced back with three runs in the sixth, helped by a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt and a balk.
In the nightcap, Cal committed three errors in the first two innings, allowing the visitors to gain a 4-1 lead. The Vulcans then erupted for eight runs in the home third on five hits, including a bases-loaded triple by Hedrick and a two-run double by Soph. OF Ryan Yost.
In the Cal fourth, the lead was extended to 14-4 with five runs on five hits, including run-scoring hits by Rohan, Sr. 1B Adam Balan and Soph. 2B Drew Aniceti.
Men’s tennis
University of Pitt-Greensburg 5, Bethany College 4 – After falling behind 2-1 in doubles play, Pitt-Greensburg rallied to take four of six matches in singles and came away with a win over Bethany College Tuesday afternoon.
Senior and Albert Gallatin graduate Brian Cerullo and partner Jason Brun cruised to an 8-1 triumph in the No. 2 doubles match.
College softball
Waynesburg 1, Geneva 0; Waynesburg 5, Geneva 1 – After a two-plus week layoff, the Waynesburg College softball team resumed play Monday afternoon with a doubleheader against Geneva College, a NAIA school.
The Yellow Jackets (2-10) received a strong pitching performance from freshman Amanda Snoke in game one.
Snoke, who boast a team-best 2.16 ERA, allowed just one run on six hits and a walk in the first four innings before Ashley Archer earned the win with three hitless innings of relief.
In game two, Geneva and Waynesburg battled to a scoreless tie through five innings behind the pitching of Erinnee Metler and Waynesburg Central Autumn Minor.
The Yellow Jackets return to action today when they travel to La Roche College for a doubleheader scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
