Local teams find out sites for WPIAL track and field playoffs
Local track teams move into the next phase of the season when the WPIAL Team Track & Field playoffs begin Wednesday in sites around the WPIAL. The top team at each of the four sites advances to next week’s championship on Thursday, May 11. All meets begin at 3:30 p.m.
The Connellsville boys, the Section 2-AAA champions, travel to Latrobe to face the Wildcats, McKeesport and Gateway. The Falcons brought home the county team championship last Saturday. The Laurel Highlands boys, who defeated Uniontown in the season finale to place second, travel to Baldwin to face the Highlanders, Moon and West Mifflin.
The Southmoreland boys not only advanced to the Class AA playoffs again, but the Scotties will be the host site to Deer Lakes and Washington. Mount Pleasant, the second-place team in Section 3-AA, travel to Quaker Valley.
The Laurel Highlands girls, fresh off winning both the Section 2-AAA and county championships, will join the Mustangs at Baldwin. The Fillies will run against Norwin, Moon and Thomas Jefferson for the opportunity to advance to the Class AAA finals.
Uniontown finished second to the Fillies in both the section and county. The Lady Raiders compete in their second consecutive Class AAA playoffs when they travel to Latrobe to square off against the Lady Wildcats, Gateway and Canon-McMillan.
The busy schedule continues with many of the teams participating in Friday’s Baldwin Invitational. The WPIAL Class AAA and AA individual qualifiers will be Tuesday, May 9 with the Class AA finals at South Side Beaver on Tuesday, May 16 and the Class AAA finals on Thursday, May 18 at Baldwin.
